Problem solved.

That's stupid though.
If you want to get a map update, they'll charge you an arm and a leg for it.

If you lease cars or change cars every 3-4 years, your suggestion is great.
If you plan to keep the car for 10 years like most normal people do, expect to pay an arm and a leg to update.

GM vehicles give 5 yearly updates for free (or the duration of the factory warranty).

After that, I would most definitely NOT recommend finding the model number of the CD you need to upgrade to, and I would definitely NOT recommend plugging that model number into any torrent search on the internet.

Stupid is calling something stupid without any clue how it works. =)

Only 5 years of free updates? That extra $2,000 you paid for gives you only 5 years?
So after that your only choice is to buy a new car to get the update or pay a couple of thousands to the car dealership to update?

I paid $60 to have lifetime map update for the duration of my GPS.
I don't have to worry about looking to buy a new car every 5 years or paying $1,000 to have it updated at a dealership.

Buy a standalone that has more features for $300 instead of paying an extra $2,000 sticker price on a car for less features, then paying $1,000 to update it 5 years after purchase.

Do you think you're getting that built-in dash for free?
Do you not know you're paying an extra $1-2,000 for a built-in dash on top of the car sticker price vs one without without?
Stupid is stupid.

You seem to enjoy making assumptions. You also seem to enjoy basing your statements as if you are infallible in said assumptions. This makes me laugh. Every situation is different. You don't know what I paid for the vehicle, however I can assure you I am not one of the mindless drones that makes up 90% of the population. I made the dealer bleed so bad they almost paid me to take it off their hands in the end, because they made a major contractual error that I felt fully justified calling them on, and in the end they dealt with me in good faith. We're talking the type of mistake where I could sell my vehicle to a dealer tomorrow and pocket four grand on the transaction after owning it for almost two years. Regardless of that, I still would have gotten the in-dash navigation.

It's not even an issue of price to me, as much as what I needed it for - but since you want to talk price, let me lay it down for you in a way that you can understand. The in-dash Nav probably saved me thousands in custom electronics when I added the SC/TT setup to the truck, as I was able to have someone custom build me an aux input override that showed boost guages electronically on my center console nav, and even allowed changing the psi using the touch-screen. That type of custom work would have paid for the nav three times over when I was done with it, and instead it cost me $450 and I did the install myself. You appear to be someone who values saving money, so perhaps you can appreciate that a tactful mechanical decision at the time of purchase fully understanding what I intended long-term saved me thousands of dollars.

I typically don't entertain people to repeat myself, but you've got me rather curious with your very narrow-minded opinion of the world.. so here goes again!

that's a lotta heated discussion about gps, didn't know those things were the next pc vs mac.

I have had paper maps stolen before actually, or at least have gone missing.

YO DAWG! I HEARD YOU LIKE GPS SO I PUT A GPS ON YOUR GPS SO YOU CAN NAVIGATE WHILE YOU NAVIGATE

i also bought in dash nav for this reason.

i have a garmin 200W. i've heard the updated 2x5's are pretty good and pick up the signal even faster.

my brother has a tomtom. i prefer the garmin, but that's probably because it's what i'm used to. one thing i know is that i'll never get one with a 3.5" screen after having one with the 4.3" screen.

I always take my GPS, powercord, and dash mount off and put it in the center console of my Expedition when I reach a destination. The only people that know I have it is someone that sees my GPS on my dashboard when I'm pulling up.

Man, that sucks. Now you have to pay attention when you drive.

finding stores/gas/food in areas you are not familiar with is not something that is replacable just through "paying attention".

not to mention even those who pay attention get lost. miss a turn or exit with a gps and it'll reroute you on the fly. no stress

And cities like Atlanta are quite easy since they're very structured and organized.

Hahahahahahahaha..... I've not yet heard one person that lives in Atlanta say that the streets are structured. We all own GPS system down here because they road layout is horrible. Peachtree is so common and all over the place.

That's what I thought too. My folks lived there once. Boston is another pain.

Wow... so many issues and warnings about GPS in you car. I have the basic Garmin model (the free one from that Discover card offer last year) and always leave it on it's suction cup mount in plain view in my car. I don't even have tinted windows and often leave my doors unlocked. True, the car is a crappy '95 Civic but I do work in south Seattle (industrial area).

Guess I might have to be a little more careful in the future since a broken window would cost me way more than the cheap GPS.

I got a GPS for Christmas... after hearing about them being stolen and crooks finding your house by looking at the "home" point, I made my "home" point the local police department. 🙂

Garmin.

I have suction cup marks on the windshield, but I always take it into my house or dorm with me.

If they see suction cup residue, they can still smash your windows and assume your GPS is in the glove compartment.
Whether it's actually there or not, you still have to pay for the smashed windows.

Buy this (assuming it's compatible with your Garmin unit).

Throw your suction cup away once you buy it. There's no need for them.

That friction mount is awesome! I had one until freakin' valets stole my GPS/mount that was in my locked glovebox. Those hookers.

Buy this and carry your GPS in it with you.

I don't leave my GPS in the car if I'm not using it.

Also, stop leaving important things in your glove compartment. That's the 1st place thieves will always go for. After that, they will probably go for the arm rest.
I keep the friction mount under my car seat.

Crooks don't look under the seats in your town?😛

Ah man... why didn't I think of that?

I guess I'll go buy a new car today after work.

Can anyone suggest me a new car with a nice built-in navigation system?
Many new cars have them.
Just find any car you like and ask the dealer what kind of options are available.

In the rush to leave for Easter weekend, I must have forgotten.

Now my GPS is gone. 🙁

On the bright side, they didn't steal my set of Pings in the trunk, or my radio 🙂

It just goes to show you... most thieves are opportunistic.

Now I get to shop for a new one!
It's like a forced map upgrade. 🙂

BTW, I had a Garmin Nuvi 4.3" 260, but am thinking about switching brands to a TomTom.
Which brand do you prefer?

Never leave your GPS in your car.
Buy a carrying case and take it with you.

Even if you lock your car, it won't stop them from smashing your windows if they see any sign that such unit is there.

Garmin > TomTom (at the moment).

It's preference. There is plenty to about garmins. You just have to look at which bad stuff you can deal with.

If doing what you did saved you money in the long run, it's okay for you.
The normal person doesn't care about those other things you modded or customized so if they only wanted a navigation system, it clearly would have been overpriced.

Garmin is making me like them less and less everyday, but I'd still say they're a bit better.
Maybe TomTom will get better and overtake them once they finish integrating with TeleAtlas in a few years.
