If you want to carry a gun then carry a gun. Getting a gun and leaving it solely in the glove compartment is silly. Bad things dont just happen to people who are in or about thier car.

I always wondered why Americans were so crazy about guns. Then, my cousin went to Chicago for higher education and said something to this effect: "I return home from work at 2AM and not once have I felt 100% sure that I would make it home alive." My brother, who lives in Sydney, advised him to carry a wine bottle with him when walking home - he has smashed beer bottles on heads (street thugs) on more than a few occasions. Not as cool as a gun but works for him.

Now all these dudes are students with sh!t jobs, bills to pay and they live in not-the-greatest of neighborhoods. So yeah, I can relate to someone wanting a gun for self-defense.

(And yeah, my political view is centrist, maybe slightly leaning towards liberal. I don't know, I can never make up my damn mind)

Well for some more perspective incase you didnt know, Chicago has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation.

Only time I have my gun in my glove compartment is when I got out of town for more than a few days.

Regardless of the practicality of it, you need to check your states laws before you go storing a glove in your glove box. In some states, you need a CCW to do that. In other states, they don't have CCW and you need to have gun and bullets seperate and out of reach to transport them. And in other places (our nations capital of all places, long live the 2nd amendment!) handguns are banned entirely.

Besides, a better place would be in a holster connected underneath your seat. :)

I support people in exercising their second ammendment rights and think that a glovebox is a silly place for a gun, but I think that merely reaching over to a glove box like you're getting out a gun would intimadate and scare off more people than anything. You'd be better off keeping an airsoft gun with a painted black tip in there than a real gun, I feel.

guns in the home are one thing, guns in the car is way different... keep a 6 D-cell mag light or a small aluminum bat in the passenger seat for protection. Cars can be easily stolen so to have a gun in the glove box doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Do you think it's unreasonable to keep a pistol in your glove compartment? I've always considering owning a few guns of my own but it seems like my dad would look down upon that...

There's a 357 in my glovebox in case someone does something stupid. I find it's pretty good peace of mind.

Both PAB and goku think that it's a good idea to have a gun in their glovebox. I have never heard of a more compelling argument toward the stupidity of a viewpoint.

/thread.

Fine, tell me why it ISN'T a good idea to have one in your glove box?

Because lets say your having a bad day, your a little emotional and chemicaly unstable on a little medication, some one hits your car and puts a dent in it. Your not thinking clearly and decide to send a warning shot over his head but instead take out the back of it, or hit his newborn child sitting in the back seat killing it. Your found guilty of murder in the first degree, sentanced to 2 life terms without paroll, where you are butt raped for killing a child till you die of ass cancer.

I am all for people owning a gun for HOME protection, but to carry one on your person, or in your glove box (considered a concealed weapon so I hope you have the right permit to do so) one of 2 things will happen. Either you will shoot at or someone, or they will get the gun from you because you hesitated and they will shoot you. Either way your going to be dead or going to jail for atempted or actual murder for whipping out your gun at a time of rage either started by you or by the other ass hat who had a gun in their car.

For you to keep a gun in your car because you feel the other guy is going to have a gun in theirs is stupid. It will not end in happy joy joy time if either of you try to prove in the heat of the moment who has the biggest dick with, "OH lets put our guns down and go make love not war, I love you brother", it will be nasty. Road rage is stupid and to have the gun in your car only means at some point you had the thought of killing someone in the heat of road rage to put it there and it will be a matter of time you get the same feeling again to actually pull it out and shoot and kill someone fvcking your life up forever.

This has to be one the most fallacy ridden, overly emotional posts I've read on this subject.

You act like the gun is somehow able to influence people's thoughts and emotions to an extreme degree considering it is a mere chunk of steel. A gun is a tool, nothing more and nothing less. Just because it is there does not mean I am going to automatically lose my mind one day and walk into a fast food restaurant and kill 15 people or start shooting at people who cut me off on the road. Maybe you are unable to control your emotions and that?s why your tirade makes sense to you. Lots of people get angry in kitchens as, so I guess we should get all the knives out of there just to be safe too.

CC holders are actually among the safest gun owners in the US considering the application process in most states and the training required to obtain it. Incidents where the CCW holder is in the wrong are pretty damn rare despite the incredibly over hyped claims of the anti-gun lobby (see Florida recently). I?ve lived with guns in the car and home for most of my life as have most of my friends and none of us have not ever snapped as you so vividly suggest above, nor have the parents who taught them to do so.

There's no good reason own a _____.

Lets play fill in the blank!
Guns
Car with more than 300HP
Baseball bat
Tesla coil
Pumpkin cannon
Trebuchet
Sword
Video game console

...but you know what? Sometimes sport, collection, and even just all around fun are good enough reasons to own them.

As far as keeping a gun in your glove compartment goes, that requires a CCW permit.

Lots of people think it's ridiculous, which is their right. I don't think it's ridiculous at all, which is why I own a few and carry one 24/7/365.

I think it depends on where you live. I don't ever plan on owning a gun myself.

I do believe there are reasonable reasons to own one, but there really are many people who just shouldn't have one.

I've considered getting a mini aluminum bat to put under my car seat.

I live on the crappy side of town and sometimes miss my guns. I left them at my parent?s house. Because, I am not allowed to have guns at my apartment complex, so I guess I am a rule abiding gun owner. Now I just keep the phone and a rosary next to my bed, so I can pray when I get robbed and killed.

1) you are accosted in a parking lot going to your car. did it help you there?
2) car is stolen. Thank you for helping arm the crooks. no, really.
3) car is not stolen, just broken into. see above.
4) something happens on the road. you decide to arm yourself rather than:
A) call the police
B)drive defensively and get out of there
Welcome to jail!

Cars are the worst possible place to "store" a gun. Cars are stolen or broken into all the time, even with sophisticated alarms.
If you feel the need to carry, carry. At least then you can defend your gun from the crooks.

Well, only real reason I'd keep it in the glove box is because it wouldn't be very comfortable to have it in your pocket..

Its a good idea to have the gun in the car with you... you just make it a point to not leave the gun in the car when you get out. The glove compartment is the logical place to keep the gun while the car is in motion, so that it does not accidently go off.

Well put.
