Well I couldn't figure it out. I burned the bootable disk and then I did my backup, telling it to split the files to DVD size and then I burned the two outputted files to two DVDs.

I booted the disc that it burned me, and it booted fine and had the recovery option but would not even let me select a CD-ROM/DVD drive. Do you know if that's normal?

I guess for the PC I'm building for a friend I could use the SecureZone area.

Sorry, I don't know. I never took the time to read all of the manual. I have tried the secure zone, and it works well. Does he have an external drive you can load the backup to?

I got it working. I was selecting the Safe Bootup instead of Full Bootup. I just did a full recovery of my system from two DVD discs. If you ever want to do this, during your backup process in the wizard tell it at the end you want the advanced options and tell it to split the size to DVD (4.7GB) and then burn the files to their own DVD disc using NERO (or your other app). Boot your computer using your Arcronis disc (select full of course) and then select your DVD drive as the recovery medium.

6GB of data (actually about 17GB uncompressed) took about 20 minutes to recover. I'm sure it's much faster using a hard drive backup but I'd prefer him to have a hardcopy of his backup in case of hard drive failure. I've had more than a couple hard drives go south, Maxtors, WD, Seagate, it happens with the best of them. I've been using WD and Seagate lately though just because they're fast and cheap!

No more OTness, sorry everyone for needlessly bumping this STILL ACTIVE HOT DEAL once again. We just love our computers <3

Good. I really like Acronis. I do all of my regular backups with it. It has a nice clone disk feature too. The Acronis Disk Director software is nice as well.
Does anyone like or dislike the utilities like System Mechanic or Tune Up Utilites 2006? I'm not sure if I like tools that mess with your registry

No, I don't really use any of those all-in-one toolkits, unless it's Systemworks. I'm also having my own SpeedFan problem, lol. It quit detecting CPU usage, says something about :

ERROR collecting CPU Usage : 1 (Unable to locate the "Processor" performance object)
Win9x:NO 64Bit:NO GiveIO:YES SpeedFan:YES
I/O properly initialized

Weird...

On the backup front - PartitionMagic has a nice feature - copy your partition. Created a nice clean installation as a reference partition of about 3GB in size, and voila. Can boot to it (itself is not bootable though, although you can play with partition tables and make it bootable if you want - haven't tried though)

They never had free shipping, only discounted shipping (using some slow-azz ground service) for $1.99 or $2.99 whole order. It was great to order a bunch of stuff including cases for such cheap shipping, and voila... 2 weeks later the stuff shows up like magic. ;) I actually missed out because I forgot to order a case I wanted and the shipping coupon expired... don't want to pay $15 to ship a case.

Cables... you'll need whatever your HDD and optical drives use, likely an IDE cable for the optical drive and an IDE or SATA cable for your HDD depending on what kind it uses.

I recieved my second board yesterday. It looks like they must have received some complaints on the packing because this one was like triple wrapped and then put in a much larger box surrounded by air pillows. Way different from the first one I got....LOL

Their packing is really bad. They sent me a nice aluminum case last year, bare in the box with just 3 air pillow packs. What a surprise when it came damaged. My complaint got me a second case, this time with 6 pillow packs kinda thown in. Amazingly, arrived OK. Not too bright in the packing expertise....

Now, time for you to OVERCLOCK....join in on the fun............

Which aluminum case? I was considering ordering that red one (Viper?) but if it doesn't even come with the original packaging, then I may pass.

No, they had the COOLER MASTER Wave Master TAC-T01-E1C that the Egg has for 135.00 delivered. It was the ones special built for Compaq that I guess Compaq canceled. Heck of a deal, 62.00 delivered. Extremely nice quality, but not the best for overclocking

Cases - the Ultra Aluminus was ~$20 AR w/ tax @ Fry's.

Oh, found out one of the reasons for my sporadic shutdowns. Evidently, running a 600W PSU through a <450W UPS isn't the brightest thing you can do ;)

Just something to think about, I'd hooked up the new PC to existing cables (swapped out an older PC) without verifying where those power cords went. Whoopsie. Time to have some more OC fun now.

Hmm. I am running a 650w PSU through an unknown-wattage APC UPS. Twice since building this system the UPS has freaked out and told me the battery was dead (which it's not).

Once was under load and once was while I was sitting on the couch and the PC was doing nothing.

Odds are it's below 650W max. UPS's capable of running 650W+ are usually above $100 w/ a good sale (about 1KVA - there's a 1.4 factor in there somewhere).

What you have to remember is that power draw isn't continuous. Drives/fans will start up or slow down, heat changes resistance, etc. The fact that you're pulling probably near max wattage during some functions, along with heat reducing efficiencies on the UPS can cause fluctuations in what's supplied. If your PSU runs slightly erratically to begin with (they all oscillate a little) and you just happen to be pushing some element (memory's a good one) you'll fail to read something important and BSOD, or something gets hot and you reach shutdown.

If you can log your values, you can track which of these are causing your problem. I know mine was voltage, because this UPS also had a laserjet hooked into it via some additional stupidity (you can see why I neglected to mention that part) and when I turned on the laserjet, the PC immediately shutdown. Was pretty obvious ;)

Well, before this system was built I had an AXP system with a TruePower 550 (pre-SATA/PCI-E). I do know power draw isn't continuous.

I did get this UPS for free about three years ago, I think it's high time for a replacement anyhow. I have added a 22" Dell CRT (replacing a 19" CRT) as a high quality gaming monitor so I know that is drawing quite a bit more power than the previous monitor. It will be interesting to see how the situation gets once I install my 7950GT -- while not drawing as much power as it's ATI counterpart with equal load, it's going to be a pill to swallow nonetheless.

Yeah - the 450 is about 5 years old. I have a 900 that is 3 years old, and a 900 and 1400 (all kVAs, btw) that only one year old. The 450 should be retired asap I think, as it has been horribly abused.

Say, can anyone think of any advantage a FX-60 at stock speed would have over a Opteron 165 at 2600MHz (which mine is very happy to do all day long at stock volts:)
I guess the FX-60 may live longer, since it would be at a standard clock.

Unlocked multiplier, the FX-series has. That would make it possible to just increase the multiplier while leaving HTT at 200, thus leaving everything "in-spec" except for the CPU.

3GHz oughta be easier, that's for darn sure. Otherwise, it's a pricey upgrade in an otherwise dying (but not forgotten!) platform.

wise very you are. unlocked nice to have. Performance better possibly except MSI board tweaks allows components all performance optimal to get.

Side note: all AMDs have downwards unlocking capability, and Yoda speak hurts my head.

Well, I talked Neighbor Bob into getting one of these Opteron 165 CPUs to go into his MSI-7125 board. After I showed him mine purring along at FX-60 speeds. Anyway, I was over there today supervising the CPU and heatsink install. I should have watched him closer instead of talking to his wife, because he forgot to plug in the HSF fan. He cranked it up and right into the windows splash screen, like 90 seconds into it, I was looking at everything and realized the fan was not plugged in. I hit the off button real quick. I told him it would be OK since the heatsink was on it, but he is all upset and sobbing that he ruined his CPU somehow. I assured him, told him he that when we overclock it and run Prime95 X2, it will be alot hotter than it just was. Anyways, I promised him I would post this in here to let the experts in here tell him it's OK, and he can get on with life. By the way, he also got a CCBBE stepping, so it should be good for him. Thanks

LOL....well I can't say for sure that the opteron is ok, but at least Bob must feel good about having a wife that is more interesting to you than his install!!

I think he's good, especially for that short amount of time. Some motherboards include a shutdown temp so he may want to check to see if that's enabled. Either case it was less then a few minutes so I doubt it even reached an alarming temp.
