Live in Civic Center close by Tenderloin for 2 years and this is my experience so far.
-crackheads and hobos galore
-have to watch where you walk to make sure you don't step on human feces
-smells like urine every other block
-The city closed down a mental hospital a few years ago because it would be cheaper to just pay the crazy drug addicts rent instead. So now you have crackheads, poverty section 8 tenants and the middle working class all living in the same $2500/month studio apartment building.
-The homeless problems in SF can NEVER be solved. Liberals treat hobos here very well. If you're a politician in SF, it would be a career disaster to even speak of the homeless problems in SF.
-Public transportation is crap compared to real major metro cities like NYC or London.

Civic Center/Tenderloin...that is basically the worst couple of blocks of the city, and everyone knows that. :D

LOTS of homeless people in SF,.. but, they aren't in the hilly areas, just the downtown area mostly from what I've seen.

Curious, when the kid is born, how do people drop them off at daycare? Do they usually drive them there, somewhere close hopefully, then hop on the BART/caltrain?

Here in the bay area we have family values, unlike most of the country, which has gone to hell. My wife stays home with the kids. She's probably cooking in the kitchen right now, just how Jesus likes it. :colbert:

(Sorry, couldn't resist. I have no idea on the daycare front because my wife is a stay at home mom.)

You could also check the Peninsula around SFO - San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame - and take Caltrain or BART into The City. Decent communities and a reasonably short commute.

Shit. I'm a loser for not having an au pair. :(

well...you still have an au one...since losing the left one..but don't despair, look at Lance Armstrong. He's done pretty well with only one.

I think I see the problem.

Believe it or not a ton of techies are living near the Loin now with Twitter and a bunch of startups close by civic center. Rent isn't any much cheaper either. You would think the most expensive and nice areas to live is where it's most convenient to everything like Midtown, but the middle is a shithole here.

Civic Center and the mid Market area are actually a lot better now than even a few years ago. I would not say that it is representative of the city as a whole though, there are plenty of nicer neighborhoods.

This is true. I became good friends with my neighbors italian au pair. The whole concept of an au pair was so foreign to me because for a kid from inglewood the thought of paying for someone to come across the Atlantic to care for ones kids was just something that was limited to the movies. Yet in the last place I lived before leaving the Bay one of my neighbors had 3 of them living with them in the house (overnight, morning, and evening) and the mom did not even work. Thats how I know that I was not of the same caliber as my neighbors.

If somebody put a gun to my head and said I had to live in the peninsula it would be Burlingame/Hillsborough/San Mateo for sure.

you'd have to pretty much shit money to live in any of those places.

The tenderloin is the cheapest part of SF that is not in the outskirts.

OP might want to consider living out in the Sunset District. Friend of mine did that when he was doing a residency at UCSF Medical Center. He and his wife had a cute little 2 bedroom row house. Rents are lower than the rest of SF, but its foggy as hell in the summer. You could take the MUNI train to Market St. quite easily from several lines that run through there.

Oh, they were from Des Moines, Iowa. Loved their time out here.

if you want cheap and are willing to commute using your motorcycle you always have east Oakland. If you want cheap and want to commute using Bart there is always West Oakland, Fruitvale District, or Richmond, ca.

I would probably not suggest the Sunset if you're working in SOMA near Caltrain. Depending exactly where you're living realistic commute times on MUNI could be 40 min to an hour each way.
