I'm just pointing out that you can point to any aspect of any traditional MMO and it's a grind to me as well. I know that EVE has the same problems, I never denied it. I was just stating earlier that travel is no less of a grind in EVE then it is in games like WoW and EQ and SWG - they all make you spend 20-30 minutes running across the world to get some digital object and bring it back.

Where EVE stands out from the rest, however, is that it is a giant sandbox and you get put into the middle of it. From there it is entirely up to you to decide what to do. Some people like the hauling, some people like shoot space rocks, and some people live and die for combat (there is plenty of PVP that is not newb ganking, I do it on a regular basis when I log in). It is what you make of it. EVE is pretty much completely player driven.

EVE isn't for everyone, but it's certainly not as bad as you're trying to make it out to be. If it were, it wouldn't be a successful and growing game.

eve is definetly the only real mmorpg, the others are mostly just simple single player games where you can play with others, you are in a static world that revolves around static content. Eve only offers static content like the others if you choose to stay in safe systems, once you go beyond safe space its a whole new world of gameplay no other game can offer.

and do you need to?

(and they are adding that, not because there is any need for it but only because they are currently developing a whitewolf mmorpg, so the code is not going to be wasted on a pointless feature)

Eve is nothing new, its every MMO out there with a space theme...is my point.

People who like MMOs and like space will likely like Eve, but you shouldnt look at eve expecting anything new or creative.

The aspect that would have made Eve a killer app for me is the flight controls, where they have failed miserably.

Freespace 2 like controls and firing systems wouldve made the game immersive and dynamic, and introduced SKILL into the game.

Instead you are met with a "click in space where you want to go" interface with a few creative buttons like orbit and maintain distance. Fighting is completely typical mmo fashion where you are met with boring 1 dimensional combat.

sorry to burst your bubble but i never once spent 20-30 minutes traveling in wow. i don't think i've ever even spent 5 minutes at once unless i messed up where i wanted to go. wow is made so that you don't have to run back and forth across the entire world for 1 object. you get object a at location z which requires you to go to location y to drop it off. sure, y might be on the other side of the world, but once you get there, the quest line either picks up from there and you quest in location y or you pick up more quests in location y and do them in location y.

you've obviously never played the game.

eve is either a mining grind, a (very crappy) quest grind, or a pvp grind. unless you just want to play merchant or whatever and buy and sell stuff and play market simulator insstead.

HAHAHAH, you never cease to amaze me. No one is forcing you to travel 1000 jumps, I've played since beta and I've only stayed in about 5 regions or less. I've never had to do "grinding" traveling simply because it wasn't necessary.

The beauty of this game is that NOW, they removed instant bookmarks, so you can travel to your object at 0km making traveling 1000x faster. Also, this game is specialized, meaning characters are as specific as it gets in their role in this game. Believe it or not, you got people who enjoy traveling and doing hauling. They make the game easier for people who don't want that task.

A lot has changed in this game, believe me, A LOT. I do admit that during its infancy of the game it sucked, but they have released a ton of content, and a ton of storylines and ships, etc etc. Probably when you played it wasn't that great, and its no reason why your comments are very biased. But after reading this forum it almost seems as though nothing pleases you so you may want to head on over to ATOT.

absolutely false. there were tons of immature people playing Eve when i did. the chat was constantly going on about retarded stuff.

it was a few months ago that i played.
meh, for every 1 fan of EVE there is probably 1000 people who don't like it.
the game is extremely slow and boring.

I would recommend Neverwinter Nights Diamond. Get that, go into Multiplayer, look in PW Action and find DK Prime

Divided Kingdoms is a persistant world in NWN where I have spent most of the last 4 years of my MMO time. It's a wonderfully done mod that still has a small, thriving and growing, community. At one time it was one of the most populated mods in the game too.

Stop trying to defend WoW, Pontifex. I know it's your hobby since I see you do it in any thread where anything negative is said about WoW. I was simply trying to paint EVE in a better light then the people who commented on it in a negative manner. There are actually people who enjoy EVE and people who haven't played it yet should receive fair criticisms from both sides of the ball.
you've obviously never played the game.
You can take your foot out of your mouth. I guess having two level 60 characters on both sides is considered "never played the game." I played for over a year in spurts. I know very well of what I speak of when it comes to WoW. It's entertaining to a point, but holds no where near the same captivation for me as EVE does (which I've been playing constantly for a year now).
eve is either a mining grind, a (very crappy) quest grind, or a pvp grind. unless you just want to play merchant or whatever and buy and sell stuff and play market simulator insstead.
This is no different then WoW at all. I mean seriously, can you call the over-abundance of "Go kill X [creature] here and/or Collect Y [item] there" a GOOD quest system? It's no different then EVE at all. They're both incredibly basic and a grind if that's all you're going to do.

There's definitely more to distinguish it then that. Player controlled territory adds a lot to the game. My alliance has just stepped foot into conquerable space and it's fcuking exilherating (although I would hate to be our logistics group). The real sense of loss and danger is also not present in other games where dying to a fellow player will just incur some trivial losses.

The aspect that would have made Eve a killer app for me is the flight controls, where they have failed miserably.

Freespace 2 like controls and firing systems wouldve made the game immersive and dynamic, and introduced SKILL into the game.

I agree, EVE would be incredibly awesome if it had Freespace 2 style control. As it is, it's not that bad. Space is 3 dimensional and position does actually matter when you get into gang sized engagements. I fly interceptors mostly when we go into fleet engagements and there isn't the rush quite like going flat out fast as possible to close the 200km distance to the enemy sniper fleet while avoiding their fire (hopefully). Once that happens, I've set up my fleet to warp in on me and lock down those snipers which are now sitting ducks.

sorry, i don't play WoW anymore and i have my own problems with the game. the only thing i'm "defending" against is the flat out lies people say about the game. it still doesn't change the fact that WoW was 100x more fun than Eve. Sure, it has a grind, but it doesn't make it feel like one.

we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Don't even bother with MMO's. They are all the same. Opponents are a block of wood that you just hack away at until it's HP goes to 0. I wish something more realistic would come out.

That's one thing that I found a minor annoyance with going from EQ1 to EQ2.

In EQ1 when mobs are alone and get low on health they start to try to get away, especially if they are intelligent (some undead don't try to run away).

In EQ2 nothing tries to run away.

it crashed like 3 or 4 times during the 45 minutes i played it.

They definitely need a tutorial too

So far VG is been fine for me too. Its like WoW but with a different scenery. Its pretty cool...when they get it stable it should be a riot.

Yup, a new drug for the drugies is all it is.

with a few added bonuses! Horses early, boats, houses all sorts of random cool things! 😀 I never really got addicted to wow so we'll see what happens with this next crop of games.

I will admit that the Eve community wasnt loaded with "battlenet kiddie types" like wow was. The one big plus eve had was its community.

Has lag significantly reduced since they went to those dual opteron blades? That was a widespread problem when i played.
