MMORPG Advice?

Me and a few friends have a weekly WOW game we play, but have gotten burned on it. Its gotten a little too repetitive and boring so we are looking for something else to play.

We have been thinking of either city of heroes or Dungeons and Dragons Online. I have played COH before and really liked it, but haven't played in a while (since before COV came out). I have no experience with DDO, but heard it started off pretty rocky.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, here is how this thread (and all MMO threads) is going to go:

PvPer "1337 dude" Dude, you got to try guild wars, its an MMO and its FREE!
EvE fanboy Man, Eve is the way to go, graphics are awesome, economy rules, so immersing!
Sony fanboy Everquest 2 is the game you should try, its graphics are not cartoony like WoW, servers never crash, and the community rocks!
AntiMMO Save your life, give up MMOs, they are more addictive, they ruined my marriage because I have no self control, I quit them and I now just watch TV all day.
OldSchooler Graphical MMOs suck, MUDs are the only thing worth roleplaying
and courtesy of Pontifex:
CheapBastard I will never buy a game and then pay a subscription on top of it!
Freeloader Try silk road or RuneScape, they are free to play and are awesome MMOs that are comparable to WoW!

lol, pretty much but you forgot some.

CheapBastard i would never pay to play a game!
FreeMMOLover try X, Y, Z, or any other of the awesome, free games! (awesome free games = sh*tty free korean mmos that are nothing but grinds)

Vanguard is coming out in a couple weeks, you could try the beta through FilePlanet. Lord of the Rings: Online is coming out in spring, you could try the beta for that too. Besides that I would wait for Age of Conan, which looks really good.

Do what I did and go offline only and play Oblivion or something. That way you don't feel compelled to help real people out or show up with a group which can be a real beatdown anyway.

Don't even bother with MMO's. They are all the same. Opponents are a block of wood that you just hack away at until it's HP goes to 0. I wish something more realistic would come out.

If you liked City Of Heroes, you'll love City Of Villains. There's far less emphasis on control and healing and more on maximum damage since the only healer class has healing as a secondary power set. Also, they're using ragdoll physics so when you strike a mob with a killing blow, they go flying and collapse realistically which can be astounding fun when they jackknife or end up keeled over and propped up on their rifle or get a foot caught on a railing and just hang there. Way more diversity in classes and looks in CoV then WoW too.

But, ultimately, it's going to be just as shallow an experience as WoW and you probably won't squeeze more than 6-9 month out of it. Still, if you have to play an MMORPG, then I'd have you give your money to Cryptic. They have major updates at least once a year that amount to the same as other MMORPG's expansion packs, but they give them for free.

--------

Another option, if you guys are up for something a little different, would be playing on the Siege Perilous shard of Ultima Online. There's a revamped (Mythic developed) client launching in a month or two which will give you just enough time to figure out wtf is going on. UO has something like 9 expansion packs worth of content and it will take you month to even begin to grasp it all. I can't play the damn thing because memories of what it used to be haunt me the entire time, but for a brand new player you might find the 9 expansion packs worth of content more interesting. Siege Perilous is their "old school" shard which is their best attempt at appeasing those who despise some of the major changes. In all reality, it's still probably too hardcore for WoW players who are used to having everything laid out for them in tidy little formulas and rote patterns.

LOTRO, VG, and Age of Conan seem to be the big contenders for the next round of MMOs.

I don't know much about LOTRO, some say its pretty good though, so that counts for something. I tend to write off almost all LOTR games as exploitation crap and don't bother it though.

Age of Conan bills itself as the first mature MMO, and from the vids I've seen, its pretty graphic for an MMO. From the trailers and FAQ, its vision seems to be akin to Shadowbane. Heavy PvP, player made cities, epic player battles, siege warfare, and so forth. Since PvP tends to bring out the worst in people, I'll likely stay away from this game myself, but its gameplay may appeal to some. I also think that its player base will be more limited because of its Mature rating, however, I am not that naive. There will undoubtedly be scores of young'uns playing the game.

Vanguard . . .think EQ1 with better graphics, or so people tell me. I enjoy the game, been playing the beta for a few weeks. I think VG will be the first game of the three to launch, with a 30 Jan launch date. The developers have been really busting their asses to get this game ready. When the beta first started, I was appalled, VG was definitely not ready for release. It crashed constantly, it was laggy, riddled with bugs, etc. While still sporting its share of bugs, the developers have been releasing multiple updates per day on weekdays, updates on saturdays, etc. The only days I haven't seen an update are sundays. A lot of progress has been made and the game is in a much more playable state now, although it seems needs a good deal of work. Sigil has a few weeks left to work. I did pre order VG myself.

Im waiting for warhammer.

Ive hard nothing but bad things about D&DO and Vanguard.

That's the one I think will be the best MMORPG of 2007. Although, I'm still not playing it or any game that doesn't at least match Ultima Online's freedom and diversity.

But watch out for a stealth title launching this year too. There have been a lot of talented and experienced MMORPG developers staying eerily quiet the past couple years. There's always the dark horse, Darkfall Online, but the closer it gets to launch the more I feel dread for its chances. They should at least be in closed beta, but they sound like they couldn't handle troubleshooting in addition to development which doesn't bode well.

I am somewhat anti-MMO. If you are in high school, or college, and your grades/social life are being affected by WoW, then just quit. It's really not worth it... But, if you are mackin' and scoring A's, then why not? It's just that I haven't seen "WoW" and "social life and academics" mix too well. I used to play btw, then realized I was just wasting my time. Besides, WoW gets boring after 60. Play something that requires skill, like Counter-Strike (1.6/Source), or Warcraft III. I'm having a blast with BF2. 😀

Thats the real trick with most MMOs. What do you give the players when they hit the level cap? Some MMOs force the players to go through the same RAID over and over in order to get better gear, with the purpose of either bragging or PvPing. PvPing itself gets old as well, especially when its mindless PvP with a bunch of 12 year olds.

Every MMO has issues at end game.

DAOC was gold before Trials of Atlantis.

Great PvP system carried you on after lvl 50.

We don't care too much about PVP. And I'm not too worried about it affecting my social life. Its just a way we can all get together and play a game since we all live too far away for a regular meeting.

i just started the Vanguard beta. not too bad of a game so far, i'm kinda surprised. could use a little polish yet.
it crashed like 3 or 4 times during the 45 minutes i played it.

They definitely need a tutorial too
