Ummm....you don't grind in EVE and that's one of the reasons I like it so much. Well actually you can grind but you aren't forced to. If you want you can make your living by killing players in low security systems for example. Or you can be a market tycoon and find stuff at low prices and bring them to another system where they command a higher amount. If anything EVE is the anti-grind game of all MMOs.

i'm planning on playing vanguard until age of conan (hopefully) saves the day. even if it is just a new EQ, everyone will be in a new game and it'll be fun for a little while.

Ha! It's so true. I tried Mu Online and that game is the definition of grind.

WoW gets boring after 60.

Thats the real trick with most MMOs. What do you give the players when they hit the level cap? Some MMOs force the players to go through the same RAID over and over in order to get better gear, with the purpose of either bragging or PvPing. PvPing itself gets old as well, especially when its mindless PvP with a bunch of 12 year olds.

Every MMO has issues at end game.

What I see my friends doing are just starting over with a new character after their current one hits 60. One of them has 3 level 60's...

Well, here is how this thread (and all MMO threads) is going to go:

PvPer "1337 dude" Dude, you got to try guild wars, its an MMO and its FREE!
EvE fanboy Man, Eve is the way to go, graphics are awesome, economy rules, so immersing!
Sony fanboy Everquest 2 is the game you should try, its graphics are not cartoony like WoW, servers never crash, and the community rocks!
AntiMMO Save your life, give up MMOs, they are more addictive, they ruined my marriage because I have no self control, I quit them and I now just watch TV all day.

lol, pretty much but you forgot some.

CheapBastard i would never pay to play a game!
FreeMMOLover try X, Y, Z, or any other of the awesome, free games! (awesome free games = sh*tty free korean mmos that are nothing but grinds)

And one more:

datalink7: Guild wars isn't an MMO...

I prefer MMORPGs that are difficult and dangerous. A game that when you walk out the city walls at night, you are seriously taking your life into your own hands...

A game with serious death penalties...

A game with realistic PvP...

A game in which leveling is very difficult and you spend quite a bit of time at each level and you actually feel like you've earned something when you level up...

A game where there aren't millions of magic items floating around. Where magic and magic-items are somewhat rare, expensive, and controlled...

A game where the economy is poor, like you are actually living in a harsh world of the dark ages...not an economy with gold flowing in the streets...

A game where the monsters are devious, unpredictable, and dangerous...

You and I have similar outlooks on MMOs. Unfortunately, those aspects tend to piss people off, particularly, the younger crowd. Thus, subscriptions drop, word of mouth spreads, and subs drop even more.

You second to last statement is of particular note too. Most MMOs start you off rather poor. In EQ2, for example, when it first launched, if you had a single gold piece to your name, you were living large. Fast forward to last August, when I stopped playing, and I had roughly 7 plat and was considered poor. All MMOs feature inflation, the longer the game is out, the worse it gets. I think a lot of developers underestimate the need for money sinks. Early in the MMO's life, you can let the players keep and spend more of their coins, but as the MMO ages, I think more severe money sinks need to be added. If people are walking around with obscene amounts of money at lower levels, the devs need to remove the coins from the game somehow, or inflation skyrockets.

Its also a game where your skills are based on time played, meaning you can never ever be the best if you didnt start at the games launch.

sounds like you might like Age of Conan. I can't say it has everything you want because I haven't really kept up with it, but I know it has a few things you mentioned.

what exactly is realistic PVP?

I hate grinding too. One of the things I hated the most about WOW was the collect X item quests. I got bored pretty quick killing 50 gnolls just waiting for them to drop 10 feathers. Felt like I was wasting time. I just feel like I'm traveling in circles with those.

Shoot, I played even for 10 days and I could tell you that traveling to various points was a grind. Only saving grace was that it was automated, and that didn't save it by much. I got tired of looking at star fields, nebulas, and asteroid fields pretty fast.

Traveling in EVE is a grind??? Oooookay. Sorry but I fail to see that. If you're not at war with another corporation or you're not flying through low security systems you can just set the autopilot up and do other stuff while your ship flies. If you fly in low sec or 0.0 sec (where I currently live) traveling is anything but a grind. During our last freighter operation for my alliance it got a little hairy a couple of times but we made it to empire and back to our space intact. Or if you don't want to travel at all you can jumpclone once every 24 hours. Again, I fail to see the grind here.

I won't really bother trying to defend those retarded statements.

Anyways, less newbs in eve is always a good thing, we're already banking from them 🙂

It's been in development for a long time, but it matches those criteria (and has really been looking good in the last year).

yeah, because it takes forever to get anywhere. i'm not sure you can call a game where people read books, watch tv/movies, browse the internet, go away from the pc and eat or do other things while "playing" fun.

WoW has travel grind - traveling across 3 zones to get an item for a quest isn't a grind? Stop being selectively critical. EVE has no more or less travel grind then your average MMO. Once you settle into the game, you generally aren't traveling more then a few systems away unless you decide to be an Empire trader or your corporation is on the warpath.

It was a little worse when you couldn't warp directly to the jumpgates, but that was fixed with Revelations.

it crashed like 3 or 4 times during the 45 minutes i played it.

They definitely need a tutorial too

hmm...i played again last night and i think i may have spoken too soon in my 1st post.
its extremely boring. quests suck, animations suck. there's only like 1 attack animation for the weapon i'm using. graphics are annoying and ugly. it has the same problem as EQ - everything is shiny. too many pastel colors, it looks like i'm living in taffee land. combat is slow and boring.

Traveling can take multiple hours, and the game is the definition of gridning.

There is very little pvp, except of course the mass griefing of newbs, which is fun for about 5 minutes.

The only time ive ever had fun is with wars, and that was a week out of 4 months of play.

Mining isnt a grind...

Missions arent grinds...

Farming isnt a grind...

Travelling that takes hours isnt a grind...

Hauling is essentially travelling...

I really dont have to say much else, to say eve isnt one big giant grind with occasional pvp and lots of lag would be undermining the definition of the game 😛
