Well I just got back from the University of Washington one. Thanks to the original poster of this thread.

I thought it was nice that they handed out the free stuff at the beginning and did the contests for the xboxs at the end. gave people a motive other than listening to the speaker to stay.

I got back from the Houston seminar tonight. Well worth my time.

2 Q's: If you went to the Houston event, what was the name of the main speaker (the guy who did the demos).

Has anyone tried installing vs.net in a w2k environment? I've been installing for 2 and a half hours already and I'm still on the second disk. Thoughts ?

Fought? I didn't see much in the way of fighting, but if you were the one hiding in the bushes next to the Hub N. entrance and jumping folks, there's a roving mob that wants your arse. :p

I went with a friend, and we got 2 extra bags each from one of the MS guys just before the last X-Box was given out, to "share the wealth" with a few of the CS guys slaving away in class up north.

And I gotta say, the ice cream thing just cracks me up.

Really, stuffing your pockets with ice cream?

WTF??

Well, he can have the ice cream. I can't have any, because I'm allergic to milk.

Why didn't they just take drink orders at the latte stand? Leaving coffee drinks sitting around in an industrial fashion like that just lets good coffee go to waste. I'm sure someone makes them do that, though.

It was all free, so it's not like I'm complaining - good food:)

I was there too! I didn't have any problems installing the version they gave out at the corporate launch. ooops...I meant I watched someone install a corporate version since I am a student too. I love freebies...they had a similar luch for professional developers at it was $400!! but it was 3 days long...we didn't get any software at the first one. A friend went to the official coporate launch and got me some software.

I went to the one at the UW last night. Too bad I didn't win anything. I got my free software though. I was talking to a friend of mine and we figured that there was no harm in asking about getting a second bag of goodies. When he went to ask the lady at the desk, she just went off on him. She started scolding him about being greedy. What's up with that? I thought there was no harm in asking. But all in all, it was a pretty good night. By the way, the food was provided by University catering, so it was just fancied up dorm food, but still, not bad.

Yeah, the ice cream was back in the corner. I don't think the catering people were supposed to put it out so early because the speaker kept telling everyone they were going to get icecream at the end. However, a lot of it was pilfered by then, even though they moved the icecream out into the hall...

The food was good, the tunes were alright (all 80's music).

The software sucks.

Norton Anti-Virus flags MsiExec.exe while installing or removing Visual Studio due to virus like activity. The install takes nearly 4 hours as it is 4 cd's plus windows component updates. Once it's finally installed, it wants to you activate your software online via Passport. Meanwhile, this MsiExec.exe chews up all your system resources, like half of your cpu time and 32MB of ram. My system is hosed now, I'll have to wipe it I suppose ;-(

The copy of Windows XP Professional they include does not say Academic on it unlike the Visual Studio cd's, though it does say not for resale or oem distribution, so it's basically a NFR copy. Says version 2002 on it, I wonder if there is something new from the initial release.

One guy who was waiting in line got his software and immediately left. People were cheering him on, 'Yeah, don't stick around for the propoganda!'

:)

Same here

Hmm took about an hour for me

I'll have to check on this, but I haven't noticed any overhead issues. All in all, free WinXP, good food (Boulder, CO event), and free VS.net. I'm pretty happy:)

32 mb is nothing in my sea of 512 ;) nav was a non-issue... you just click on the little thing that says "allow this script" or whatever... nothing wrong with activating software... i mean your copy is legit, so it shouldn't be a problem, right?

i think it's just that the "corporate edition" key doesn't work anymore ;)

<< If you "forget" your student ID, bring a printout of the confirmation email, which at least in my case made no mention of having to bring an ID (I realize a separate mail did mention that, but neither the confirmation mail nor the sign-up page did). Who knows, hypothetically speaking, not that I ever did such a thing, one might get in that way. >>

Anyone know how likely this is? I signed up for the NYC one the first day I saw this post. My reply email made no mention of a student id. And unfortunately I am a complete idiot and forgot my ID today. I don't think I will be able to get my id before the start of the event.

The worst part is that they will probably just think that I am a non-student trying to get in because I am a non-traditional student (slightly older than most college students). This sux.

<< Can the version of XP they are handing out be used on more than one computer? >>

The VB.net they gave us allows for 3 computers (I don't usually read the EULA, but this time I did, so I think I got that right). There was no hard copy EULA included with the WinXP, so I had the same question, but I guess that's already been answered. Too bad I couldn't get two (I have a laptop and a desktop).

Haha, no, it was the black lady.
I stuck around late to see if anyone left any bags lying around, but nobody did. I guess I'll just have to wait until I sign up for a CS class so I can download another copy of XP.

food was pretty good but did anyone notice at the very end of the UW event, a bunch of people went up for the spiderballs etc and eventually they got one of the speakers to take off his shirt and toss it into the crowd

At the Houston event, the MS marketing guy was Michael Bronsdon and the main demo speaker who is a trainer/author was Richard Hundhausen. This is his book Programming Ado.Net

The embarrasing point of the evening in Houston was when Richard was alt-tabbing from PowerPoint to VS.net and a big dialog box said he was connected through AOL!. Hilarious! Everybody was chuckling and he had to backtrack and apologize "Uh.. I just got here and this is someone else's machine." I wonder how much lost MSN business he caused.

Yeah, ditto - good food, cute lead singer in the band and what's not to like about free uncrippled versions of VS.net and XP pro. Couldn't win XP at the Houston MS XP launch back in October and didn't get in on the lava lamp package, so this was definitely a HOT DEAL. You need your student ID, but they are not going to frisk you or ask you 20 questions. Well worth it. ... you can leave anytime you want after signing in and getting your goody bag.

Can someone who's gone tell me how long the presentation is scheduled to last? I have to leave around 7:15-7:30, but I'd like to stay for the drawing. Otherwise, I'll leave my student ID with one of my friends, incase I win something. ^_^

LoL, I saw her hit up for extra copies, she was guarding them like she paid for them herself.

When in doubt, always ask the guy who's just messing around. :p

Keep the student ID, leave the raffle ticket - if it's like Seattle, it'll go until 9.

LoL, please tell me it wasn't the X-box guy.
