They just wanted a picture id, from a school. Thats it. They wouldn't let anyone in to the Philly one without an ID although I saw a MS girl let someone in and i heard her say "don't tell anyone i'm getting you in", so i addressed her and she let my buddy in who forgot his id. Everything was good other than that. The sound system sucked so we couldn't hear anything, but other than that the presentation was good.

<< Just got back from the one on Portland... Twice during the presentation one of the three huge TVs displaying their powerpoint presentation switched to a MAC OS desktop! It was hilarious! The first time it was before the thing had gotten going - but the second one was right in the middle of it. The Microsoft guy couldn't help but address it... saying something like, "Could somebody please get rid of the MAC desktop?"

The mac thing was the funniest part of the whole nigh!!

I have a ticket, or well have signed up for the New York launch on the 14th of March...

Can anyone who has gone to one o the launch events that have happened give me some pointers or such?

Like i know i HAVE to bring my student ID...which i have...
Like im wondering, should i get to the event a few hours before hand or such? Or will everyone who signed up get in?

Can everyone who has gone confirm a free copy of Both VS.net acadmemic AND WinXP Pro?

Thanks in advance.

My guess is that you might having trouble getting anybody to just give it to you.

But I'm sure (as this is a hot deals forums about making/saving money) someone might part with it in return for monitary compensation.

Tokar, just based on how things went for the Portland event, I saw no reason to get there early. The invite said 6:30, but a half hour later, the silly thing hadn't even started yet, and the band was still blaring away with "Like a Virgin" covers and the like (incidentally, the singer sounded more like Gwen Stefani doing Madonna than Madonna). People were being checked in that whole time, but most everyone had already gotten there by 6:30 and moved into feed on the sliced meats and salad bar. People also liberally enjoyed the use of the floor in front of the band, since MS thoughtfully neglected to provide chairs. I recommend bringing ear plugs.

You do get a slim bag with the media for VS.Net Academic and XP Pro NFR, and that's essentially it.

If you "forget" your student ID, bring a printout of the confirmation email, which at least in my case made no mention of having to bring an ID (I realize a separate mail did mention that, but neither the confirmation mail nor the sign-up page did). Who knows, hypothetically speaking, not that I ever did such a thing, one might get in that way.

Tokar, I agree with rseiler -- no need to get there early. I went to the Philly one and and arrived at 6:20 (event was supposed to start at 6:30) and didn't get in until ~7:50. They seperate the attendees by last name and send you to the appropriate line. My line happend to be the slowest, so I [and a few others] kept getting passed over (a friend who was in line with me got in 20 minutes before me). Anyhow, enough ranting, the speaker started at ~8:00 when everyone was in or waiting in line for food. From what I gathered, if you are on the list you will get in. I also think most (in not all) of the stand-bys got in too, as a large number of people (50+) came in after me -- I was one of the last 15 in line, and they had all the stand-bys waiting on the side.

They did have chairs at this locations though (maybe Temple supplied them). Like the other locations food and beverages were offered, and EVERY attendee received Visual Studio .NET (academic) and Windows XP Professional (labeled "Not for Retail or OEM distribution"). Plus we got some other fluff (shirt, pen, high-lighter, note pad, mints).

PM me if you can't make it. I would *really* like to go in your place.

Maybe we could work out a deal with the software...

those of you who have attended this event would u give us an idea of how long this thing will last? I don't recall anyone saying what time it ended. All i want to do is get my software and hear a little about vs.net so i can have an idea what i'm gettin myself into when i start fiddlin with it. Do they lock you in after you get your software? haha

EDIT: hey, i forgot to add, did they give away alot of prizes, i remember them saying something about xboxes and american express checks of $500. Wouldn't mind getting getting my hands on a few of those....

They actually let you go right after giving you your grab bag at the door. But there is food before the talk, then the talk, then the giveaways (xbox, american express, mp3 players...) then live music. you can leave whenever you want

When I was leaving at 9:15-30 at the one in philly they had already cleaned up the entire registration area and I saw no extra bags or any of the boxes the bags came in, dunno where that all went.... Vaporized!

y00ycdz, your forgetting, they left the one box of pencils out where the registration tables WERE. I was at the one at Temple Univ. in Philly. Got there like 30 minutes early, and that line was LONG!

I went to the FSU one last week. I had to drive from Valdosta Georgia, so it took a bit and I ended up there at 6:50 (it was suppose to start at 6:30). Since I was late the lines were already gone.

No extra bags to give away there, but I did find one in the bathroom that someone had forgot about :p

I am tempted to sell the extra VS.Net I have

I saw the setup for the University of Washington launch (at the HUB). There are no seats anywhere, so everyone who goes will be standing for the duration. There are about two dozen small round cocktail tables at random locations around the ballroom for eating (but only 2 or 3 people could eat at any one time). I also hear that the same band that preformed at Portland will be at the UW too. Better get there early.

You guys won't believe this...I went to the one in Seattle and there're some hungry-nerdy-greedy bastards who scramble onto each other to grab ice creams...See, one of the official guys left the two ice cream stands alone and people just went mad....Just to show you we're not as civilize as we think....I saw this one chinese dude ransacked the place...He actually filled up all his pockets with ICE CrEAM......LOL....You can imagine 5 minutes later...

Overall, i love microsoft...their party was awesome..nice band...good food, good software...
