The difference between old Splinter and new Splinter is actually a lot like the difference between Yoda in the old Star Wars movies and the new ones. Old Splinter didn't do much more than flip Shredder with the nun-chucks and have some wise words, but the new one was flippin' around with some crazy Kung Fu. Give him a light saber, and I wouldn't have known the difference! :p

Speaking of Splinter, I kind of wish they would've gone with a better voice actor for him too. Adrian Monk from the TV show Monk (Tony Shaloub) doesn't really give off that "sage vibe" to me.

that comparison isn't really valid. the yoda in the new movies is the same yoda from the old ones. it's the same character in the same story line.

the splinter in the new flick isn't the same character as the splinter in the old flick.

but my point for bringing that up was that he made it out to be like splinter and shredder's relationship in the past movie was a huge reason that shredder wanted to hurt the turtles and splinter, and that there was some huge feud between them, when in reality, shredder had no clue who splinter was until the movie was 99% over.

I'm not talking about whether they're the same character or not; I'm talking about the level of interaction the character has in the story. Both Yoda and Splinter are vastly different between the old and new version because of practical effects vs. CG.

oh i gotcha. they can definitely do a lot more with the cg now. splinter looked a lot better than yoda did in his fight scenes, but that should be the case since this movie is like 10 years newer or whatever from the star wars flick. the fight scenes in general were really well done in tmnt in general though.

Just saw it. I thought it was enjoyable. Some people here get really butt hurt about Michael bay and turtle mythology lol. Only thing that annoyed me was tony shaloub at splinters voice. That was just wtf.

Saw it. I'm pretty lenient on movie reviews, but I was absolutely not entertained by this movie.

Did anyone else get the feeling like the Turtles could have been absolutely any characters and it would have been the same movie? They could have had the cast of Scooby Doo as warriors and nothing would have changed.

The last movie I saw that felt like that was the Star Trek reboot.

Saw it. Was not impressed. Maybe a sequel will be better. This one was kind of all over the place.

most of the time i can just sit back and enjoy the movie. i don't look for hidden meaning, i don't critique the science etc. I enjoyed the Transformers flicks for what they were (giant robots kicking ass).

but TMNT sucked. the first hour sucked ass. once the action started it got lame.

I just caught it tonight; I'm with waggy on this one. I don't mind brainless popcorn movies like Transformers, but I was fairly disappointed with this one. The original live action movies were campy & a LOT of fun, and this was missing that fun. This is what bugged me the most:

1. It felt like an adult wrote the film, whereas the originals, they were lame and funny and enjoyable and they worked. Go ninja go ninja go ninja go go go! :D This tried to do too many Dark Knight-style shots, which would have been fine if they had kept that somewhat seriousness consistent, but it just didn't work for me. Kind of a design-by-committee type of release.

2. It felt like a Hollywood director collaborated with Freddie Wong. Don't get me wrong, I love Freddie, but this whole movie felt like that one Youtube video he did with Jon Favreau:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71YsRO6G7Ks

3. There was like zero character development. Everything felt really rushed. I think it needed another 30 minutes to really flesh it out. Same with the story...wasn't Sachs already rich? And why does Shredder only want to take over one city...where the majority of the population would be dead anyway...what's the point? Plus, it felt like it was the "April O'Neil show", not the "Ninja Turtles show." Which would have been fine if they had actually had her do real acting or picked a better actress, but she was very reactive & passive the whole time. The bad ninja Asian lady didn't even get any kind of focus at all.

4. The entire soundtrack sounded like trailer music. Like, everything was SUPER epic. I felt like the music needed to go more into the background a lot of times.

5. The guy who wrote Michelangelo's lines should have been in charge of the entire screenplay. He had some really funny tidbits, but they were just kind of sprinkled here & there.

6. The ADR lipsync was terrible. That's something that bugs me & throws me out of a movie - when I can tell they recorded it after & it just doesn't line up with the picture at all. And it kept happening over and over and over.

I initially didn't want to see it because the turtles looked really, really weird in the trailer. Creepy-weird & kind of disgusting-weird. Once they got into character in the movie, they were fine, but Splinter was still icky looking. And they tried to make him a bit more relatable by putting a wet nose like a dog on him, but it just didn't work. Like, I think they did a great job with the first Transformers movie...it captured the fun of the original stuff. This fell short, in my mind.

The Screen Junkies video linked above had some excellent points. They should have kept Sachs as Shredder. They should have had Krang or something crazy in it, since everyone already knows the backstory & they have awesome graphics to work with. This movie was just kind of a mess all around. I'm reading through the comments on that video & there are a lot of good suggestions:

1. Emma Stone as April O'neil. I'm not a big fan of hers, but I think she would have fit the role a LOT better than Megan Fox.

2. More characters, especially Casey Jones (Kit Harington, or I'll go out in left field here & suggest Chris Angel), as well as some nods to Bebop & Rocksteady.

3. Replace Will Arnett with Ryan Reynolds or somebody else who isn't creepy-weird.

4. More focus on Michelangelo's lines. "She's a Jeeeeedi" & "Cowabunga!" & his elevator DJ song, haha.

Overall this movie felt like it didn't know what it wanted to be. Like the Screen Junkies said, you can throw up a movie like Guardians, which no one has ever heard of, but have a good story with great characters, and people will wanna watch it. This wasn't a really "fun" movie, like TMNT should have been. I enjoyed "I, Frankenstein" a lot more than this, despite having its own share of issues.

Meh.

It's TMNT. How can you possibly go into it expecting anything except braindead action?

Any enjoyment, or lack thereof, of a Michael Bay take on TMNT will be solely predicated on the reviewers tolerance for braindead action.

As much as Stephen Amell comes across as an awesome dude, the short hair kinda bugs me. I'm just so used to the guy from the older movies. I'm also a little worried that he's going to use that soft, hushed voice that he uses in Arrow. You know... the one that sounds like it would put people to sleep rather than intimidate them. :p

As for the rest of it, it's good to see them revert some of the nitpicks from the first film. An example is how the foot clan actually seem to be ninjas now, and Shredder appears to be far more than a last-minute addition. Also, the stuff with Bebop and Rocksteady seem to be quite ridiculous and over-the-top, which could be fun.

I watched it on a friend's Roku/Plex and lets just say, it was so dumb and ridiculous I wouldn't even my 5 year old nephew watch this garbage.

that goes without saying it's michael bay, megan fox, and ninja turtles. of course it's dumb and ridiculous.

but the trailer made it look fun as well to watch, namely because of the song. ahh i remember when SSX tricky came out :D

He didn't watch next year's movie on his Roku. He's still on the thread's original subject.

This trailer surprised me of how awesome it was. They completely threw out the whole dark and realism look and went full cartoon.

That trailer alone is more awesome than the entire first movie.

+1 haha

Casey Jones looks awesome! Best part of the trailer tho was Bebop & Rocksteady busting out of the whitewaters after the turtles in a tank :D
