You keep remarking about the maid speaking Spanish.
You haven't read the documents presented in this thread so far. On the maid's employment application, the maid clearly states that she is NOT a US citizen. She also states that she is attending a university to learn english. Etc., etc., etc.
Given your set of imaginary facts I suppose it's reasonable to assume Whitman knew she was an illegal. However, given the real facts that have been presented so far, it's not.

may have known, but no evidence, including this SSA letter, has been put forth establishing she did. In fact, there is more evidence that she did not know (complying with payroll filings which disclose everything about this relationship to the government, using an employment agency to find an employee, paying a real wage etc).
In fact, I suggest the letter itself is more evidence they didn't know, at least at that time. We can see that her husband instructed the maid to complete the form. I.e., he was complying. If he/they knew she were illegal, why even bother with that?
