I don't see why it upsets people if they strike. If MCD's fires them, thats between them and the workers..why get butthurt about it? I don't blame them for trying to make more money.

Seems like typical union thought: demand more from the system than what is put into it. That kind of process just isn't sustainable.

PWAHAHAHA that's funny, it's not, it's unskilled labor. I find it funny that the same people that are saying that you are cheap if you don't tip at least 15% even for horrible service no matter where you go don't want to pay these guys more.

If you work at McD for $7-8/hr for EIGHT YEARS (!!!) you have nobody to blame but yourself. Even if you have no motivation or aspiration to improve anything, you should still be able to want to get the hell outta there after that long! You will never convince me that there are no other jobs to be had in New York.

I've never had to work fast food but I have worked for $8-9 before. I never felt the company owed me more or I somehow had a magical right to more just because. I didn't get more? I moved on to something better. End of story.

Don't feel sorry at all for people who do absolutely fuck all to better their situation.

A waitress can make 50K a year easily in California.
 
so who's actually done the numbers, what would the actual menu price changes be ...

maybe they deserve maybe they don't, you can't say that working in such places isn't hard though, I doubt you could take it for long, if only for boredom and stress, just because its low wage doesn't mean its easy.

if you adjusted the original minimum wage for inflation from back when america actually had a middle class, it probably would be around 15 dollars now you know.

anyways, henry ford, remember him? if workers have more to spend.....

No, cost of food would go up, meaning that to break even for higher paid wages, in other areas, would have to go up to compensate. Which again is cost to those companies they have to pay (which they will not just eat either), meaning THEIR products/services will go up in cost to compensate.

Why is it that people at the bottom asking for a payrise is something to be mocked and discouraged, yet corporations looking to maintain their immense profits is applauded as being noble?

An increase in wages doesn't mean a linear increase in costs and prices.

people in this forum fail to realize what happen in the past,
(aka first industrial revolution)
80 hours of work per week of work, yet workers died because they didn't earned enough to buy food...

meanwhile, i work in the biggest architect office in my town...
reached there because one of my engennering teachers pointed me out to my curent boss

i have 3 bosses they all travel abroad once-twice a year, new car every year, one goes to party almost every night...

i receive the minimum wage of Brazil, because they can't pay me less because of the law...minimun wage in Brasil is just enought to buy food, i have to live with my dad
i should sue them because i work pass our and don't receive a penny more... but i can't, is like shooting in your own foot... who is going to hire me then?

yep, we should have the market decide our salary...own your own bussines or back to slavery

To the guy above who commented about plugging bad hard drives into a wall socket, what happened? & How exactly is this done?

Regarding the actual topic at hand, obviously there is no way they are going to make $15 an hour.... hell I'm a hotel restaurant manager and my base pay before OT is slightly less than that, and I went to college for management, blah blah blah.


Regarding the change in cost structure when giving all staff such a large raise, most restaurants I believe operate on a <10% profit margin. So correspondingly, a hundred percent increase increase in wages means revenues have to go up. Which mean higher prices. No way around it.

As for the inflated salaries of top executives, in McD's case their executives are likely paid out of franchise fees and other income streams like corporate owned stores etc, if there are any. The individual management companies that run the franchises that these workers are at rely on net profit and salaries to survive, so they can't absorb the increase in labor cost either without revenues (food prices) going up.

If you took the ~$20M compensation of the key executives (CEO, CFO, COO, 2 presidents) and distributed it amongst the 420,000 McDonald's employees, it would result in a <$50/year raise for each. I am shocked at how few people understand this as the fact it is.

While $8.7M/year for the CEO is obviously fantastic compensation, running an organization of that size is quite a bit harder than flipping burgers. Executive compensation is out of hand but I don't know that it's necessary applicable here.

What is preventing you from either leaving for a better pay or moving up in the company?

Half the people here refuse to process anything that predates the iPhone, and the rest can't seem to remember anything before 9/11.
 
"when I was your age" I made $7.50 doing data entry and that was considered good for a HS student. And that was a skill job (now everyone knows computers and can type 115wpm).

the company have just 15 people, yet is the biggest architect office of the region... i did worked without any contract and lower than minimum wage salary in smaller companyes.
going up from here... is creating my own office (have to graduate first), or going to the state capital

sucks to hear that a bricklayer can earn way more than you and some co-workers togheter, but no bricklayer in the whole Brazil will earn more than one of my bosses.
