EDIT: Forgot to add: I think Bob Weir in his way did as much to revitalize rhythm guitar from an interchangeable supporting member to a full partner as did Keith Richards or Lindsey Buckingham or James Hetfield. He's still a pretty mean guitar player - no Buddy Guy (who is?) but damned good.

yeah, I love Weir. One of those under-appreciated dudes, but he isn't the greatest, obviously. Probably the best vocalist throughout the Dead's history, sure...but damn that's a low bar.
I just prefer the Barlow/Weir tunes to the Hunter/Garcia tunes overall.

Isn't that true of most rock bands though? Can anyone truly say that Mick Jagger or John Lennon are great singers? Or, you know, good singers? And John Lennon and Keith Richards made fortunes playing rhythm guitar in open tunings, but both are really little more than pale imitations (pun intended) of Bo Diddly. I love those tunes as well, I just prefer the cowboy/rough and tumble drifter aesthetic you got with Barlow's stuff.

I don't like to venture too often into the Dead stuff after ~82 or whatever, so I avoid most of the cheesiest moments. I feel that ~67-79 is the sweet spot. Even the disco stuff can be good, but really the early 70s is the best.

Same here. I have most of what they did, but 68 to maybe 72 is my sweet spot, after the worst of the psychedelic but before the Godchaux disco phase. As far as low bars, Dead vocalists is more of a stripe thing - they never really had a good singer after Pigpen.

drunk..but i'm not drunk and slightly sober and kinda pissed off and only have a little bit of weed in front of me. I have to piss in my pee jug now because my sister is in the can for last 1 hour now...this is my last post unless i want to get on a vacation.
