I'm currently in Austin. Had a fun time last night - got to meet Leslie (wikipedia search will show you quickly who Leslie is - he is nice and ran for mayor once!)

Trying to decide how to get to New Mexico at this point - not sure whether I should go route 10 through El Paso or head West and go through White Sands and then pick up Route 10. Any suggestions?

I would suggest taking I-10 to Fort Stockton, TX then heading North on US-285 to Carlsbad, NM and check out the caverns and then maybe head north to Roswell or West from there to Alamogordo and White Sands.

Some things to see along the way if you have time...
Get some Peaches in Fredericksburg or Stonewall.
There is a big arse statue of Davey Crockett in Ozona.
Take a detour off of I-10 on TX-290 and check out the ruins of Fort Lancaster.
Enjoy the giant emptiness that is West Texas and don't hit any deer.

Marked for later! :)

Right now I'm sitting in Taylor, TX waiting for the Texas Eagle to come through. Bought myself a $9 ticket to ride it into Austin to join the festivities and hang out with my friends .... at 6:00 PM. It's running 3 hours, 29 minutes late. And that's just an estimate.

Oh my, to finally experience all there is to experience about Amtrak's long distance routes sharing with the freight railroads :)

It's okay - one of the Union Pacific guys hooked me up with a mini tour. Now I'm just sitting here enjoying the UP diesel's go by while I surf ATOT and update my blog.

EDIT: Now it's closer to 4 hours - w00t - all part of the experience!

Wait, I thought you were driving? So you drove to Austin, then drove to Taylor, then bought a train ticket back to Austin? And then you are going to ride the train back to Taylor to get your car?

We're going to this!

Still in Phoenix. Will be here for a few days.

Saw New Mexico and the White Sands. Really nice :) One of the guys here says he has a farm or ranch in New Mexico and I'd love to meet up and see it if it is in the Northern portion! (At this point I probably wouldn't backtrack through 10).

All is well!

Don't miss Caesar's Riverboat Casino once you make it to Indiana. It's crazy fun having a few drinks and playing blackjack on a nighttime cruise. And they have the best crab leg buffet on the planet.

Maybe you can make all your gas money back ;)

Sounds like you're having an awesome time. I'd love to take a couple of months off from work (or maybe quit) and do the same thing. I've visited a lot of places in the US but I guess it's not the same as what you're doing.

I'm curious also....how is gas taken care of?

Have fun man. And if you decide to stop by in NYC on your way back and want to meet up for drinks (or lunch...I'm right in Times Square), let me know.

Does anyone want to organize a meet up somewhere along my path? San Francisco? Portland? Seattle? Boulder? Denver? Dakotas? Iowa/Nebraska? Indiana? Chicago?

Life is going well. I'm sitting at a place called Wildflower Bread Company in Prescott, AZ getting some work done on my laptop. Free wifi, woo hoo.

Doing some camping the next couple days - looking forward to that.

Some people have had talks of scheduling an ATOT meet up in Phoenix on Sunday - looking forward to that, too!

Going to *try* to update my blog today.

Remind me when I'm in your area! I'll be slowing down as I get closer and closer to the East coast again. Out here on the west coast, there's too much to see and it's overwhelming. But someone else told me to hit up Indiana, so I'd love to.
