Did you like it? Was it graphically rich?

Steam has it $19.99 thinkin on jumping on it. Looking for a good spacefaring game.

It's not spacefaring in the sense of Freelancer / X^N / Privateer. You do have the ability to visit other systems/planets and search for resources/relics, but those come across as more 'achievements' than directly influencing the game. It's primarily an RPG with the standard small team 3rd person viewpoint (think KOTOR, but realtime).

I thought the graphics were decent, and it had more depth than most games.

Thanks. Sounds like a winner. I noticed some folks talking about crashing.... is this current state of the game?

No, you just need to apply the patch...btw don't forget to play the expansion, it's an asteroid (x51) in the map, make sure you go there before you finish the game and don't delete the save files as it is required to play mass effec 2.

It seems like a lot of people have problems with it crashing but a lot of people also have it working apparently so it seems like kind of a crap shoot. Not sure what the ratio of working to non-working is though so you can go for it if you want to take the chance.

I loved Mass Effect. It's my favorite Bioware game (coming from a HUGE KotOR fan). I can't wait for ME2.

No. Nvidia driver 182.06 fixed the main problem.

What problem was that? I played through the game in its entirety on an 8800GTX at launch and replayed through extended portions on a GTX 280 as well a few months later without any video related issues. The only major problem I had was getting EAX/surround to work on my X-Fi with the buggy configuration tool and Bioengine.ini settings.

To the OP, great game if you like story-driven action RPGs you'll certainly enjoy this game. Some complaints were about length. If you don't do any of the side-quests and planet explorations I believe total game time is something like 17-20 hours. Doing all the codex side quests extends it into the 30-40 hour range. Exploring all planets and such can increase that into the 40+ hour range. For $20 its a great deal.

I did. I really enjoyed the Baldur's Gates, but not to the degree that I did the newer games. I've loved almost every Bioware game.

no, they're not required, but reportedly ME2 will allow you to carry over the major decisions you made in ME1. I read that if you do not have the save games they'll simply run a Q&A in the beginning of ME2 conversation-style to determine how to set the game up for you.

e.g.

Q: So, is Wrex still on your team?

A1: Yes, he's a little rough around the edges but he's alright
A2: No, he *****spoiler :) *****************

OP: definitely get the game, especially at that price. A movie and popcorn runs almost $20 and only lasts 2 hours.

There are ten THOUSAND THREADS about Mass Effect on these forums, all of them long and crammed full of opinions. Read them.

I loved it- wish I hadn't sold it so I could play through it again.

It's basically KOTOR in a sci-fi setting with an original story. If you played KOTOR, then you probably already know whether that's worth $20 to you.

I'm about 8 hours into it, and I have mixed feelings. I like the dialog/storytelling a lot, but the combat/leveling/biotics/equipment isn't great. The combat is pretty boring and upgrading biotics and equipment seems almost pointless. I think it would make a better point and click adventure than action RPG.

Hello!

Welcome to last year!

Seriously though, I had all your complaints as well. It helps to remember that you're playing an epic interactive adventure and the mechanics are there just to help you pretend you're playing a video game.
I didnt like anything about the gameplay but the story is just too good to ignore.

I found that once I came into my biotic powers, running into a room full of baddies and tossing them around was quite fun. Helps if you pretend you're a jedi.

i was gonna say, the combat is a bit clunky, but it's essentially kotor if you want it to be- bring a couple soldier teammates to do the shooting for you and use biotics for yourself in place of force powers. bam, same thing.

personally, i preferred to shoot.
