Mafia 2 Demo on Steam today

It doesn't sound like you've played GTA4. I've played almost all of these sandbox games and GTA4 is the first GTA of the 3D ones that took itself serious and the story is very much an important part of the game. The three previous ones didn't but 4 does.

When you compare all of them, GTA 4 is darker and grittier. To be frank I did not care for niko. The only time I felt for him was
when Kate is accidentally killed by Peggorino right after Roman's wedding.

The storyline falls short when you compare with Mafia.

is it me or is AA pretty useless? still jaggies everywhere so i just turn it off. not worth the 20fps hit it takes for AA. also turned off ambient occlusion and framerates are pretty decent. but the demo was way too short!

There is a patch to turn the timer off. At least you have the option of AA on PC...PS3, not so much. D:

but i don't really see AA doing much other than dropping my fps by 20. but yeah gta4 didn't have AA either so i guess they went the extra mile for us PC guys.

In game AA doesn't work. Force it with your GPU and turn it off in game.
I loved the first Mafia... but for some reason, I didn't enjoy the demo.
I'm sure the story will be there, but the health regen, cover system, and easy AI kinda ruined all the gun play that was so much fun in the first.

Enjoyed the demo. Am I assuming correctly though that even if I pre-order the physical copy from Amazon that I won't be able to sell it in the used market (because of Steam registration)?

Yes, which is just one of the reasons I will never pay more than $10 for a game from/requiring Steam.

Might not do much (AA), but that is what we have to deal with on consoles....yeah.

I loved Mafia; but in between the time of the first game and part 2, I suffered GTA burnout and got bored of this type of game.

Now imagine my surprise when I discovered that I've played the demo for an hours time! I'm thinking I may get the PC version.

Here are my comparison screens.

The first screens are at max EVERYTHING. PhysX, AA, everything. Ran like shit (recorded with FRAPS, but had to stop as it started artifacting my card)- 4850, got about 8 FPS after entering the building for the shootout pretty much.

Next screens were with settings pictured below. Game ran at anywhere from 20-80 FPS for me. Lowest drop was 20FPS during the blow up scene after what'shisface getting shot, but it pretty much stayed around 30. Very playable.

I don't know how PC users drive with Simulation, it is hard. On PS3, the trigger allows sensitivity presses, so it is a lot easier.

As pointed above, AA seems to do nothing.

Without AA, All setting MAX, No Physx

AA on, Settings: same as above

Also, I do not see any significant drops in FPS, weird.

Simulation is easy. Just tap when pulling out if you can't handle it. And going around turn just brake, and halfway through push the gas. It's REALLY easy. And fells real.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then back into the desktop fixed that for me.

Weird bug though

I get the same bug when I exit the game, my screen turns all dark like somebody turned down the brightness on my LCD to 0. I haven't done the ctrl-alt-del, just restarted my computer every time which is a pain in the ass. Thanks for the tip!

I've also had my display driver crash after exiting the game, I'm running a Radeon 5870 with the latest Cat. driver. I'm hoping these bugs are only in the demo and not full game or I won't be buying.
