Played the demo for a bit last night and was pleasantly surprised. I've never played Mafia before so when it first started, I was expecting a period-piece GTA knockoff. But the inclusion of a cover system added a much needed element. The driving seems to be a little wonky since hitting accelerate seems to make me peel out every time.

I'd probably buy this when it comes on sale the first time. I just have too many other games at this point to justify dropping money on it.

Very fun but nothing that I need to buy day 1. I have a huge backlog of games from all the Steam weekend/July 4th/New Years sales.

Does anyone know if this has multiplayer?

I'm thinking about downloading the demo tonight, I never tried any of the Rockstar Mafia series games.

Probably would need a controller/joystick to control acceleration more.

EDIT: Wow the driving really does suck. Not sure if the above would help..

If you are going by the scores of FRAPS disregard this.

The inbuilt benchmark has a flaw in Mafia II, it is showing extremely low minimum FPS.

I got a min FPS of 8.1 whereas using FRAPS I got a minimum of 30. The avg, OTOH, is accurate.

Yea, 41.9 was the average framerate. My min was 7.5 and 15 something the 2 times a ran it. I'm going to reinstall Physx tonight and see if that helps.

Regarding the FPS problem..

what I noticed, it happens when I respawn or restart the mission (after a death).

If you die, restart the game (re-launch it), and it fixes the problem.

I was actually referring to the benchmark, though I experienced what you did in the game after I died. My fps was like 18, but after a few seconds it returned to normal.

I did the fix, but didn't notice any change. I actually lost 1 fps.

Wooh! I was worried I might need to get a new graphics card, but I actually got decent framerates at 2560x1600 with a GTX 280. I had to turn off Ambient Occlusion and Physx, but it looks great. Demo was pretty fun too.

1. No multiplayer- doesn't need it
2. Not made by rockstar, it's made by 2k czech
3.The driving is fine with a keyboard. I have it set to simulation driving and its perfect.

The driving seems bad because the cars are from 1945. I found the system itself to be fine.

Demo was a lot of fun. Driving reminds me of GTA IV very much, maybe the cars slide a bit less on hand-brake.

Game runs perfect with everything on/max apart from PhysX (needs nVidia card for that).

yeah i noticed it was a little easier to control cars by setting the driving mode to simulation. not a huge difference between the 2 modes though.

also fyi... there's a hack out there for removing the time limit. but there really isn't much else to do other than pick up a few playboys around town.

Alright, here is my review on the demo. After deleting the PC demo and waiting until the next day, the PS3 demo didn't look that bad. But it will probably be like GTA4 for me, get on PS3, beat, maybe sell, get PC when there is a sale, see graphics, can't go back. Regardless...

The demo was basically made to show off the physics and open ended aspect of the world. And it does well. Going out to your garage and getting a car is nice, especially because you are allowed to customize them, including performance, and store them back. I'm not sure if there is a limit, but I noticed in an interview this is one thing they wanted to do to entice people to hopefully live the "Mafia" life instead of being a GTA bad boy and stealing every car in sight. I'm sure it will work for me, as I like the upgraded versions of the cars. The others shops, like gas stations and gun stores and clothing shops are cool. I was able to go in the clothes shop, browse, and pick an outfit very quickly. I was able to go get my car filled up with gas and get a car wash by just pressing a button. While this may not appeal to the masses, it is quite a nice touch and really represents the time period well. The gun shop guy was nice, he'd give me compliments if I bought a lot, try to sort of small talk me, and then instantly pull out if I pulled a gun out :awe:. Robbing people is fun, and it is actually easy to get away. The cops seem to know what is up, but don't come rushing. I had a cop come in the store after I was sitting in a vehicle outside, run to the body, look at it, and just walk out. Kind of disappointing, but it may be different in the full game.

Gun play was satisfying. The cover system works very well, and the weapons seem powerful enough, and really represent the time period that they are set in. Mafia did a great job of this too, so I didn't expect any less. The only thing that gets on my nerves is not having the ability to vault over cover when I'm behind it. I also don't like not being able to vault over high railings when running around. Basically I can vault over fences and such, but that is about it. I can't jump down a story or anything like that. I would suppose that adds to the "realism", as NORMALLY you wouldn't do that IRL, except in a chase, which I could see it being annoying in a foot chase. You take 4 bullets and you're dead pretty much, which I appreciate. I love going balls out and being Rambo, but I also like realism, and if you stand out in the open in a room of enemies for more than 2 seconds, you're done for. Shooting cars and blowing them up was fun, the explosions looked good and everything just seemed right. All the object physics in the world seemed to work well, like the part when you get past the small scene where everything blows up and that guy shoots at you through the bookcase.

The driving was also very good. I actually like the simulation driving more than the "arcade" style or whatever it is. The cars handle like they are from the time period, and are just fun to drive. The speed limited being there at the touch of the X button works really well for cops. You'll get pulled over for speeding in a heartbeat, but if you see a cop on the radar, tap the limiter and it will slow you down instantly, and hopefully in time for the cop not to see you. Light poles and such can be crashed into, some stop the vehicle fully, which I guess is realistic, but I'm so used to plowing through everything in GTA4. If your engine gets too damaged to the point it won't run, you are able to get out and fix it by pressing SQUARE. It still steams and the body is still damaged, but I thought it was a neat little thing, especially if it was one of your cars and you wanted to get it back to your garage.

All in all, the demo was a very good showcase for the game, and I'm real excited to play the full game. The story seems like it will be good, the acting was good, Joe seems like he'll be a good character throughout the game. Animations were good, shooting was great, driving was fine, details were excellent, and there was Playboy magazines. Awesome. Awesome.

From the thread in console gaming. I really can't wait for the game, 2k did a great job on it.

Just played the demo, pretty fun. I never played the original but Mafia 2 seems to be worth a buy.

Do yourself a favor by playing the original game.
Seconded.

I played the demo of II, and while the story still looks to be great, the gameplay seems rather easy, and no where near as intense as Mafia. Most likely I won't be buying Mafia II, but I bought Mafia 1 again off eBay to replay it, fantastic game.

The game is a little sluggish for my taste. Even though Mafia might be the 'predecessor' to GTA, I don't want to play another remake of GTA4 even if it's better. I'd rather just watch the Godfather :D

I am sorry if I sound rude to you, but why the comparison? The only thing common between them is they both are sandbox type games and the similarity ends there.

I am a fan of both games and enjoy playing them immensely. In GTA, the storyline is not important, the game was never meant to be played seriously and it should be enjoyed that way.

Mafia, OTOH, is more like a character driven movie; preference on the storyline and simulating real world experience.

really want to play the demo but it keeps either CTD'ing or BSOD'ing me at random points, I can't play it at all, i did get about 2 min in once and was running people ove,r that was fun.

windows 7 64bit (all updates)
updated .net framework
updated directx
updated HD4850 drivers
amd 64x2 5000+BE

not really sure what's causing it.

you know what? I had the same freaking issues with Mafia, I was plagued with CTD's and some wierd sound issue where you coulnd't hear people talk.

Seems I am not destined to play this game lol

i played the demo and enjoyed it a lot... and had never played the original. for it being such an old game it's really held up well. really enjoying the storyline so far... very excited for the sequel now that i figured out it's being made by the same developers.

the original is honestly one of the best games i've played in a while.

It doesn't sound like you've played GTA4. I've played almost all of these sandbox games and GTA4 is the first GTA of the 3D ones that took itself serious and the story is very much an important part of the game. The three previous ones didn't but 4 does.

GTA IV definitely did have a much better storyline than the other games, but it's still nowhere close to the quality that you'll get with Mafia II. The first game is probably in my top 3 for best storyline. It's incredible quality for a video game. GTA IV was only slightly above average.

Um, GTA IV was better than a lot of story lines I've had in videogames. It actually kept me interested throughout. It is definitely higher than "slightly above average".

For me, it wasn't. But I'm pretty selective with what I play.
