If you intend on keeping this CPU another 6 years, get the i5-4460 and get 4 real cores. Haswell i3s have really quite good hyperthreading. But the real cores are going to make a difference in CPU limited games going forward. 4 cores is better than 2 now and is going to be even better than 2 6 years from now

I already bought and received my CPU. I went with the i5-4590 after finding a few extra bucks hanging around. Thanks for the recommendations.

I. Don't. Know.

I have heard that the stock cooler is noisy under load. I remember installing a stock cooler on a G3220 and what surprised how silent it was on idle. But I have never pushed that computer to full load.

And while I will not overclock, the i5-4590 can go up to 3.7 on Turbo mode.

But you will likely never put it under a load in any normal use that would cause the CPU fan to run full bore.

My guess is that you will never notice the stock cooler being loud.

Probably. Anyway, I ordered the parts, and they should arrive in about 2 weeks.

Maybe I should try with the stock cooler and see what happens. I'll put one of my 120mm in the back as exhaust...

My case is not very motherboard friendly. Some cases have windows for the back of the CPU in order to change backplate without removing the entire motherboard. Maybe I should cut one in :)

The stock cooler is easy to put on and take off, so you can easily try it first.

If you find it getting too loud, it's no problem to remove it.

I have absolutely no worries about putting on and taking off the stock cooler. I will have to remove the motherboard from the case if I put back my H50 (has it requires a custom backplate - and I don't think the stock cooling will clip in the backplate's screw hole).

You have me thinking about a water block now.

You have reminded me that I have gone back and forth with a few different coolers on my flaming hot 4790K, but never went the water cooled route.

Since I have already done the backplate thing a few times, it should be no trouble.

I'll second the suggestion to just try the stock cooler, I've run a bunch over the years and they're nearly silent. While cooling efficiency is not up to the level of water cooling (duh), they do an acceptable job of cooling the chip without generating a lot of noise.

... and so I did last night. I installed the stock cooler. Boy is it noisy on power up! Other than that. With my case opened, 2 intake fans in front, on giant exhaust fan on top and one in the back, idle temps are between 39 and 40. which seems a bit high. (Applied the AC MX-2 instead of the thermal paste that was on the cooler)

I did not test the system yet. To my surprise, I was able to boot from my old partition with a few peripherals missing drivers. it was FAST! Like, 2 seconds of Win 7 boot animation and voilà! Logon screen!

Will try to fix my cable management issues this weekend (6 SATA cables to route) and reformat the drive and i'll give you an update soon.

a little update for those who are still tuning in...

I am still running my i5-4590 with stock cooling. I am still waiting for a new mounting kit for my Corsair H50. Idle is around 30 (Was initially 40 - I think the thermal paste is settling).

I haven't installed any games yet. But I have been able to play with PCSX2. And boy was I surprised!

Where my Q6600 would struggle to stay over 20fps, the i5 would easily give me 40fps on the two games that I tried. Still needs a bit of tweaking.

I'm reasonably satisfied with my Coolermaster Gemini M4 heatsink except I'd like to change all my fans to Nexus 1000 rpm fans.

... and some more updates from moi!

Well... I had a bit of fun playing GTA IV running smooth at 60fps with detail settings to HIGH for most. Didn't play much, but had a lot of fun until last Friday.

Came home after trying all day to connect remotely to my PC and was never able to .

Well... my computer was turned off. Why? I don't know. But seing that my girlfriend's computer being at the login prompt, I figured we had a small power surge at home and most computers rebooted. (no blinking microwave clocks, though).

Tried turning the computer on. Nope. not working. No spinning fan, no. Nothing.

Well, seems like the PSU died on me. The previous power surge that might have killed my MOBO (which is basically the reason for this thread) had weakened the PSU enough for it to die at the next one. How it managed to work a couple of weeks is beyond my comprehension.

I didn't have time to test all my hardware. Hopefully, only the PSU died and that the new hardware is still intact. But I ordered a new PSU as this one was 6 years old and running 24/7 for that time.

I will also change my surge protector as IT. IS. NOT. WORKING. ANYMORE.

Will keep you updated.
