The government dumbed down schools to avoid having another free thinking 60's generation....the result is we are churning out retards who know only of consuming and nothing of creating.

Kids would do better with less school and getting out earlier. Listening to Obama and the other pod people in education you would think kids are being born dumber the last 25 years. They are being dumbed down, miseducated and drugged up is the problem. This is Obama being his weirdo neo-Marxist self. I could guess what kind of re-education he would engage in with the extra time.

What do you expect? The Alumni from these departments don't make $$$ like the medicine or business schools, and there isn't a lot of competition for teaching jobs due to the pay. Why would the standards be high when the reward is medicore, at best.

Kids in Asia don't do well because they stay in school longer (In fact the article point out some Asian country kids stay in school less), they do well because they have parents who care. Even in the US, you see very high achivers in racial group like Asain and Jewish people, those group often with parents and family who cares about and actively involves in their's kids edcuation.

People in this country, especially parents with kids in school need to stop pointing fingers and start to face up to their own responsibilities. Or else nothing is gonna work to improve the crap education result in this country.

Longer school hours and longer school years will do nothing for the average student. Effective teaching techniques, real penalties for students who don't perform up to their ability, and less touchie-feely ego-stroking would be far more effective than more hours in school.

I was told that in China, children who do not perform well are called "lazy." They are not called stupid, and they are not put in an easier class. Lazy can be fixed, stupid can't.

No, I'm sorry, you are wrong. The fact that you are saying this, along with the fact that you are saying it is a well-known statement of fact, is evidence that you never actually bothered to research the point yourself, you are just regurgitating what you people keep saying while having no clue yourself. This is flat out, wrong.

Again, absolutely wrong. The facts do not support this myth that has been thrown around constantly without anybody actually taking the time to look the statistics up.

This!
Parents are no longer giving children the attention and encouragement required to excel in school or in anything else for that matter. Parents are spending less and less time with their kids. This will always have a negative effect on their growth in so many ways.

Yup. Putting them in school 12 months/year isn't going to fix a damn thing> Just give the kids more schoolwork to do that their parents don't help them with

Edit: oh a problem with longer school days is that normall the kids go to school for 6hrs, and that gives the teachers 2 hrs a day for prep time and grading papers. Now the teachers have longer days to and we cant pay them anymore.

Exactly. Most teachers don't work 6 hours/day. Most i know work closer to 10. Most schools also expect teachers to stay after-hours several days/week in order to help with after-school activities. This is outside of the extra hours they spend grading/correcting/reading assignments. Yeah, they get 2 months off in the summer...but they're working more during the 10 months that they DO work.

Is this a joke? Close private schools and rich people are not going to send their kids to ghetto schools to get stabbed with the rest of the poor people. They'll simply move out of the vicinity entirely, taking their tax revenue with them.

Anyway, I just think this idea is a solution for dual income families barely being able to afford daycare.

My biggest complaint would be that teachers take too much time off during the school year to go to conferences and refresher courses, or whatever else they do. I think they are having wild parties on School Time. Why dont they do their training during the summer?

god damn your fuckin stupid. You don't want teachers to take time off to learn new things to teach  We need to remove your ability to vote.

How much time off do you need to learn "new things to teach" in American History? Math? English?

:p

Most, if not all, states require continuing ed to renew a teaching cert. Teaching is more than regurgitating facts they learned themselves in college, so its not just a matter of learning new history/math/science facts.

Apples to oranges? Better comparison is Korean Americans vs Koreans, American Jews vs non-American Jews, Mexican Americans vs Mexicans.

Or a better comparison, segment scores by parents' income level.
Or segment scores by number of hours beat by parents
Or by a measure of parents "giving a shit"

No, its not apples and oranges. Omar stated, correctly I might add, "By and large, our students are terrible. We rank consistently in the bottom of all industrialized countries in math, science and reading." I simply provided links.

ok i disagree with you.

but ultimately, who gives a shit? i'd rather have a dumb cashier working at walmart than one that is overeducated. He's more likely to feel bitter about it and probably vote blue.

I agree. The days of the kids beeing a necessary part of the family farm during harvest are, for the most part, long gone.

For a few years, our daughter was in "year-round" school. The year was broken into "trimesters" with two week vacations inbetween. She retained more of what she learned from the previous semester and her grades improved greatly.

 My ex is a teacher, and always said she spends the first month/month-and-a-half reviewing last years work to get caught up.
