Longer School Days

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200...n_re_us/us_more_school

I do not like these kind of articles that try to make people in the USA look like they are less itelligent than children in other countries. This is because I know that it is a misrepresentation of the truth and it tries to paint everyone with a broad brush. Especially when they start making you count people in the country illegally from other countries.

For instance I spent time in an asian country in South Korea. One thing I learned is that if you wanted to send your child to highschool it was on a pay as you go system and they only had mandatory school for grade school age children. Many countries are like this. Do not trust numbers from countries from outside of the USA.

What I disliked when my kids went to school was that the teachers never wanted to open the school early. It would be 10 degrees outside and they would make all the kids wait outside till 10 minutes before school was suppose to start. Makes it kind of hard if you have to go to work. Maybe they should have study hall from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM. 8:00 -3:00 is not even a full work day. At some work places (Like Wall-Mart) they do not even pay you for lunch. I think some School Teachers have got it a little soft.

Meanwhile many districts are cutting after school activities and even teacher layoffs due to funding deficiencies. Good luck getting this to fruition.

While I would argue that the current school-year setup is ridiculous, this should not be a federal issue. This is a state issue.

U.S. children have math and science scores that are, across the board, inferior to a huge collection of countries across the globe. This isn't made-up or debatable, it's part of well known record at this point.

See, this post is exactly why some foreigners think Americans are downright stupid.

I have no idea where you got that from the article you linked. The item I read stated that our students are disadvantaged because of our obsolescent school schedule, not because they are somehow less intelligent than students from other nations. I also failed to see any indication the president made any such implication.

Also an interesting spelling of the president's name; do you think he's Black Irish?

edit: cleaned up quote

The current schedule(we have it in Canada too) is from a long gone era and should be changed. It's structured around an Agricultural Economy/Society which simply doesn't exist anymore. 4 or 5 2 week Vacation periods evenly spaced throughout the year would be more convenient and would help Children Learn/Retain better.

Education departments at US universities are the ghettos of departments. Anyone who fogs a mirror and pays the bill can get an MA in education. Many of the teachers and methods are inferior. Classes are stultifying and boring. The PC rubbish grows exponentially every years. The average high school is a holding tank for studs and strumpets. Kids would do better with less school and getting out earlier. Listening to Obama and the other pod people in education you would think kids are being born dumber the last 25 years. They are being dumbed down, miseducated and drugged up is the problem. This is Obama being his weirdo neo-Marxist self. I could guess what kind of re-education he would engage in with the extra time.

My biggest complaint would be that teachers take too much time off during the school year to go to conferences and refresher courses, or whatever else they do. I think they are having wild parties on School Time. Why dont they do their training during the summer?

By and large, our students are terrible. We rank consistently in the bottom of all industrialized countries in math, science and reading. Our school system is a complete failure and it needs overhauling from the bottom up. Longer school hours will not change the fundamental problems in our school system, although it is a help. We need a much longer school year, at least 240 days, which is on par with every school system in the developed world. We need to tie student achievement to teacher incentives. Under-perform consistently and your ass is out the door. We need to stop glamorizing sports because kids today are convinced that sports are a ticket to financial success. Schools that can barely teach their kids to read and write have multimillion dollar sports programs and facilities. These are but a few of the problems in our school system.

Secondly, we need to reward education again. In just about every PhD program that's not worthless (eg science and engineering) the majority of students are foreign-born. Without producing quality scientists, America will lose it's status as the world's scientific center.

So your real worry is that President Obama will give school teachers more party time?

The trolling by the usual suspects in this thread confuses me. Year-round schools are hardly some new idea that Obama just came up with. People have been talking about it seriously for decades.

as usual your an nidiot who did not read the article and has no clue what you are talking about.
As was stated earlier -- our students are disadvantaged because of our obsolescent school schedule, not because they are somehow less intelligent than students from other nations.

Of course you probably dropped out of 6th grade with no education and now your full time flipping burgers somewhere!

Everything in our schools is based on a blueprint that is over 200 years old. They use technology as an "aid" to this outdated model, not as it could or should be used. Good luck getting any significant change past the unions though.

eh, the school and the gov. can do whatever they want but unless parents start caring, nothing is gonna change.

Kids in Asia don't do well because they stay in school longer (In fact the article point out some Asian country kids stay in school less), they do well because they have parents who care. Even in the US, you see very high achivers in racial group like Asain and Jewish people, those group often with parents and family who cares about and actively involves in their's kids edcuation.

People in this country, especially parents with kids in school need to stop pointing fingers and start to face up to their own responsibilities. Or else nothing is gonna work to improve the crap education result in this country.

Our school calendar is based on an outdated economy. We really should have kids in school 12 months a year imo.

Yes, just think of how many fruits and vegetables kids put condoms on with all of that extra time.

We don't have children who live at the pleasure of the economy. They need a substantial vacation and just play.
