The austerity measures are an element of the riots. The Royal Family causes many of these austerity measures.

No they don't, if you start a thread on it I'll tell you why. You might have to wait till I get home from work though.

The short version - the royal family don't do anything. They have no political power, cannot make or overrule law, cannot hold any official posistion, can't lobbly, and they make a net profit for the country.

The only excuse to get rid of the lot of them is moral reasons. Which is fair enough - they stand for an ancient era where the king was the last guy who was still sitting on his horse and holding his sword when the battle was all over and everyone else was dead. But what are we supposed to do? Have an American style 'president' instead?... people would laugh...

Where is the proof that they bring in a net profit for the country? Please provide the evidence.

And in what world is the head of state not an official position?

They do a lot. They have a lot of social and political power. Having routine meetings with the prime minster is quite powerful. Being able to appoint your inbred relatives to high-level positions is powerful. Having your inbred relatives be given preferential treatment in their careers is powerful.

Some of that can't be controlled (for example, social power). However, at least the government, and the people, don't have to subsidize it by living in austerity.

They also do not make a net profit for the country. They are a drain, and the people have to live in austerity to fund the extravagant lifestyles of the royals. The royal wedding also caused a .2% drop in GDP growth and cost the economy $10 billion. They are part of the reasons why the people have to live in austerity.

People will applaud if the monarchy is dropped. Any system can be adopted, even a brand new one.

I'm not sure why you're worried about one of the wealthiest countries in the world when there are dozens of countries with 90%+ poverty rates and royalty or presidents living fabulous lifestyles while their people starve. Why don't you bring some attention to those places? Why focus on a wealthy country that keeps a family in a lavish lifestyle due to birthright? Or if that's such a hangup for you, why not focus on the Kennedy family of the United States?

I'm not sure why you're worried about what I'm worried about. Why don't you post about child slavery instead? That topic can use some attention on these forums.

I don't focus on the Kennedy family because they don't have a government-mandated birthright. The royals can be like the Kennedys. Or any other deposed royal family. If a select group of people want to worship them, then go ahead. But the people should not be forced to worship them.

No need for guns when they have cars.

UK Riots Live Blog

Metropolitan Police has confirmed to Al Jazeera that at approximately 02:50hrs on Tuesday, August 9, a male police officer was injured by a car in Fulton Road, Brent. He has been taken to a North London hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

A second male police officer was also injured in the incident. He was taken to a North London hospital with a minor injury.

It is believed the injury occurred when police stopped some cars (not known how many) as their occupants were suspected of being involved in looting of a nearby electrical store. It is believed the driver of one of the cars drove away injuring the police officer in the process.

Three people were later stopped by police and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A question for everyone who posts about the UK's gun ownership laws. So how would universal gun ownership change the current situation in London?

The only answer I can come up with is more people would be getting shot.

I know you guys are resentful of other countries that do not support your attitudes on gun ownership. But it still comes down to: What are the number of gun shot related deaths and injuries in the US vs UK or any other country that does not support universal gun ownership.

London bridge is falling down falling down my fair lady. So the lads are hungry broke jobless /underpaid.

I can see this happening right here in the USA

Why don't the euro countries ever deploy the military or riot police to completely outnumber these assholes? How is ok to let these people just loot and destroy everything?

Rubber bullets FTW

The euro country? Most European countries are much harsher on rioters. The UK has a history of "civilized" police who don't carry weapons but they're learning it doesn't really work in a modern multicultural society.

Euro countries. France with angry youths, Greece with angry libtards, England with angry wanna be gangbangers.

I beg to differ, I'd argue that our system is working well, as a result when we have a riot few people die, which is obviously one of the most important considerations for the police in that situation, also we don't have police violence that results in people getting shot very often! Which is a much better way to live, very few people die in the process of being arrested or after committing a crime here, whereas in America there are so many instances of the police shooting criminals.

The police here aren't armed or trained with firearms (except for some specialist units)

We'll see if the UK doesn't get a little tougher on these guys in the near future... So far, it appears that politicians are saying "all options are being considered" when asked if the military will be involved.
