Arnold, this is not the way to do it.

Text

*
An "iPod tax" that charges state and local sales tax for "digitally delivered entertainment services" - in other words, that new Beyonce song you download.
*
State sales tax at movie theaters, sporting events, taxis, buses, limousines and cable and satellite TV and radio.
*
Costlier driving with the repeal of the 8-cents-per-gallon sales tax cap on motor and diesel motor fuel, plus and increase in the auto rental tax.
*
Tuition increases at SUNY and CUNY, $620 and $600 a year respectively.
*
A 50 cent tax on cigars. The current tax is equal to 37% of the wholesale price, or 34 cents a cigar.
*
No more sales tax break on clothes and shoes worth $110 or less, except during two weeks a year.
*
Higher taxes on wine, beer and flavored malt beverages. He would also impose an 18% tax on non-nutritional drinks like soda.
*
The rich would pay more for luxury items through an additional 5% tax imposed on cars costing more than $60,000, aircraft costing more than $500,000, yachts costing at least $200,000 and jewelry and furs costing in excess of $20,000.
*
In addition, a host of a fees, including those related to motor vehicle licensing and registration, parks and auto insurance, would go up, as would various state-imposed fines.

Other then the tuition one all the others I am ok for.

More tax on tobacco and alcohol is always a good thing but it should go to funding the cures for the damge they cause.

What's missing from that is all the budget cuts that are being made too.

Mentioning taxes only leads to comments like this

New York's budget has been in trouble for years. So much tax revenue comes from real estate transactions on Wall Street. New York City is a major portion of state taxes as well as city, so when real estate takes a bath, this is exactly what happens.

Some cuts:

Medicaid spending would not be as hard hit; it would still rise by about 1 percent under the plan, although the projected increase for hospitals, nursing homes and other health care providers would be cut by more than $1 billion.

The governor?s spending plan also calls for eliminating or merging seven smaller state agencies, cancel property tax rebate checks, curtail general municipalaid to New York City and close 13 prison camps or detention centers.

Spending of state funds would increase by only half a percent under the plan, a turnabout from years of spending rates well above inflation.

Mr. Paterson?s plan would close a $15.4 billion deficit for the balance of this fiscal year, which ends on March 31 of next year, and the following fiscal year. He is introducing his budget more than a month early as the state grapples with a twin calamity ? the collapse of its main financial engine, Wall Street, and a deepening recession.

Mr. Paterson also proposed that the state should begin to take the kind of steps that Detroit automakers and other corporations began to take with their unionized workers years ago.

Just to name a few.

The bolded is especially important I think.

Legendary,

Yes, what you bolded is the most important part and still gets a "LOL! Democrats" response.

In a time of dramatically shortened revenue, spending is STILL increased. Every point in your cuts gets a "LOL! Democrats" response because it is very funny, very predictable.

So what is his answer?
1) Increase spending
2) Increase taxes
3) Take away from crime fighting

LOL democrats!

How about this Mr. Governor? STOP SPENDING SO MUCH MONEY! Isn't this the same dumb state that has the transfat tax or ban?

At least they're not planning on "taxing" out of state commuters even more with higher bridge tolls and insanely high speeding tickets for a change. It's getting to the point where I dread visiting New York instead of enjoying it simply due to the travel costs!

Yes, Thank You. I'm projecting some disgruntlement with my city mayor who is pulling the same kind of shit.

I'm getting disgruntled. We're all very disgruntled.

1) You have to understand, going from a inflation rate+ budget increase every year to going to a 0.5% budget increase is essentially a budget cut. Budgets increase every year for nearly every state, simply because the same amount of money is worth less.

2) How else do you bridge a deficit gap? I can't name a state that has enacted massive budget cuts with no new taxes to fix a deficit gap. Can you?

3) Where is cutting spending on crime fighting mentioned? Closing prisons is absolutely not the same thing.

My main point is that typifying Paterson's budget as standard 'LOL Democrats' is short sighted and unfair. Every article I have read on this except New York papers only mentions the increase in taxes. Such nonsense.
