It's about the games stupid! Wii brings to the table something new and interesting. If the games are fun then people will buy it. Nobody cares if you use blue ray, green ray, death ray, or sting ray. I want something that's fun and different, with great gameplay.

LOL!

I guess I am not arguing about the hardware so much as I'm arguing about the gameplay aspects of the Wii, sure they will be able to do fun stuff with the wiimote, but its just not enough for me I guess. I want new games, not old ones with a twist.

Honestly, I didn't see much difference in gameplay from the PS1 generation to the PS2 gen. The XBox had the Live service which Sony is still trying to match. The biggest change in gameplay is going to be on the Wii this generation. We may see some cool stuff with Sony's motion detecting controller, but I'm guessing Nintendo will lead the innovation in this arena with Sony simply trying to duplicate/copy what Nintendo is doing.

Played Wii, took pictures of Wii.

Played Gamecube, owned a gamecube for a year

Wii != Gamecube

Wii is ten times better than Gamecube. The graphics might be similar on this first round of games but thats it. Everything else is different, amazing, fun. I mean where else can you use a video game controller like a baseball bat and swing it like a freakin retard much to the amusement of everyone around you. Hell I'd buy the Wii just to play it drunk with a bunch of friends.

Just the thought of imagining playing Wii Baseball or Wii Tennis with 4 drunk off their ass people is enough to make me smile :D

Link to thread where I got to play Wii at Nintendo Fusion Tour

There is nothing revolutionary about the cell and little new to top it. Of course IBM is using the powerPC core for their servers...they designed it as a decent general purpose CPU. Sony came along decades after the original instruction set was laid out and requested a CPU for their new console. They threw on a handful of co-processors (also something that has existed in various forms since the 80's) and called it a day. It's going to be a good, solid CPU, and if programmers learn to write to the co-proc's strengths it might be really fast.

Good, sure. Revolutionary? Not even close.

You're right, but you can't expect me to be able to hold back the fanboy 100% of the time! :(

This is the key. Fun. Fvck the PS3. More of the same rehashed slash/shoot/swear/war games with higher resolution graphics and a pointless 11ty bn GB white Elephant. Big fat hairy deal. Games are fun, the Wii is fun.

Case study: PSP vs DS.

PSP owns the DS technically, but games suck ass. The DS has outsold the PSP by roughly 11ty bn to one. Not on tech specs, but on FUN.

There's nothing revolutionary about it. Revolutionary = a whole new paradigm, never done before. Like the wiimote. Evolutionary = an upward improvement in the same paradigm. Like faster processor, more storage.

Tell me then, what untouchable gameplay mechanics were possible with the ps2 that werent possible with the PS1? I honestly can't think of any, but you apparently have, so I'd like to hear them. And what all that extra cpu and gpu power, what types games that were not possible with the previous generation will there be? I can ratchet off a whole new list of new ideas for the wiimote. I can't think of anything gameplay-wise that couldn't be done on a ps2 that should be possible for the ps3.

Graphics are important, but theyre not everything, and the improvement in graphical impact from ps2 to ps3 is not nearly that as the ps1 to ps2. Processing power and storage are important, and naturally, more is almost always better, but again, it's just going to make that whats already possible just a bit higher resolution and quality.

I want new games too. Thats why I'm so damn eager for the Wii. Same characters maybe, but a whole new way of playing.

Actually to be honest, I am not looking forward to any of those games, except maybe GT5 and FF13. I've seen the White Knight trailer, and it looks spectacular, those are the kinds of games I am looking forward to. The games I look forward to the most are going to be from Japanese developers, developed for japanese gamers. I love the RPGs, the music games, and the really wierd ones like katamari and loco roco. Such a retarded premise for a game, and yet you can play it for hours on end.

If something like Bioshock was exclusive to ps3 then I'd consider it. But now I'm considering a 360 just because of Bioshock, I loved system shock 2, the gameplay was amazing, atmosphere, everything was amazing. So I'll probably get a 360 and bioshock next year. I'd get a PS3 if there's something on par with that at least, but needs more because of the insane price.

Or you could always get a PC, which pretty much eventually gets every good game the Xbox 360 gets. Bioshock with mouse is better than bioshock with gamepad.

The only really obvious one I can think of is the move from cd to dvd, which I think brought on voice acting. Revolutionary was probably the wrong word to use. I guess I'm thinking about the ability to draw a player into the game and emerse him in the game environment. I'm sure there was a lot behind the scenes that was made possible with the ps2 hardware. Polygon counts? I guess thats just graphics. meh. I'm spent. I need to go nef now.

Voice acting adds nothing to *gameplay*.

Even though COD3 isn't out, even though the PS3 will have better graphics, somehow I know bashing a kraut over the head by swinging the nunchuk down hard, and aiming directly at the screen to shoot will draw me far more in than a more realistic explosion. One makes me think "cool", and the other puts a grin on my face just thinking about it.

Ya, but it's a bit expensive when you're still going to be a post grad student with not much money for a while. Wii has the most bang for my buck. Possibly the 360 sometime next year.

Very true. The Xbox/X360 is more like a PC than not. I wish MS would stop pretending otherwise, and just let us hook up mice and keyboards. That'll get me to buy one. :p

i think you've just failed to realize that you're accusing nintendo of rehashing the same thing over and over again, and were just owned by BD2003 and mflacy.

I love Nintendos crazy fun games, back when they were on the Nintendo. Since then they haven't made enough original games for me to buy any of thier consoles since the super Nintendo. The N64 was tempting, but my friend had that and they were all multiplayer games anyway. Is there any game that can compete with Chrono Trigger?

I think the wiimote is only gonna be good when it comes to multiplayer games, other then that its gonna be like whackin off in the bathroom.

You and DBZ sure do have a lot of quality insight into this issue. Thanks for your post!
