Little rant about health insurance

My wife has a cyst on her ovary, and her doctor said either the cyst or the ovary needs to be removed. Sometimes the pain is so bad, she hurts just walking around the house. We have health insurance, so this should be easy enough - wrong.

The insurance and the hospital want us to pay our full deductible up front "before" she can have the surgery. The price we were given is around $2,500O that needs to be paid upfront. So my wife needs the surgery to be pain free, but we need a couple of grand before her standard of living can be improved.

What "really" pisses me off, is people on Medicaid can get everything they need at almost no cost to them. My tax dollars go to people who in some cases do not want to work, and spend a good part of their lives mooching off the system. While I work, try to provide for my family, and we have to fork out several thousand dollars before my wife can have a surgery?

And we wonder why the US is having so many financial problems?

For low - medium income families, what is the incentive to get married? When people can have the kids they want, mooch off the system, get all the food stamps and medicaid they need.

I know a family that has 2 kids on medicaid, a few weeks ago they took the kids to have their teeth cleaned. My job does not provide dental insurance,,, well they do, but I have to pay 100% of the insurance cost.

When did the lower class become a class of entitlements? There are people out here who try provide for themselves and their family, and are kicked every time they turn around.

So you're angry about having to pay for a necessary medical procedure, and instead of suggesting an alternative to the system we have now, you turn your ire to the people that actually do get care? That seems like a poor way to look at it.

What? Where do you think the money for people to get care for below cost/free comes from?

The Republican solution is "fuck you and die" well that's what I gathered when I read their 1 page alternative to the Affordable Healthcare Act.

So vote your self interest. When you vote your fears or your hatreds, you allow politicians to use you to promote their interests, not yours. Let your reps know you want to see a single payer system that covers everyone, including you.

Last time I checked, Obama was a Democrat.

"Maybe you're better off, not having the surgery, but taking, the pain killer."

The problem on the right is they don't see it as everyone should have access to essential health care. They see it as if I can't have it, neither should you.

i know people on medicaid. the medical care is free, but the choice of doctors is pretty bad. the better doctors don't take medicaid

What does that have to do with the Affordable Healthcare Act when major components that would affect the OP's situation will not even be in place until after 2014?

Good luck to your wife. My brother had brain cancer when I was a kid and its frustrating as hell. Thankfully we had insurance from my dad who was a marine. Sure, he had a job and "paid" for our insurance. It would have been nearly impossible to pay our way through it without his government benefits. I can assure you that the amount of money spent on treating my brother's cancer and the after effects (miraculously he survived with a 5% chance) was not even remotely covered by anything my father "earned". This is why the whole "for profit" model is bullshit when it comes to healthcare. What if my father had been some other profession where he couldn't get such amazing healthcare benefits? Would that mean that my brother didn't deserve cancer treatment? I don't think so.

at your age, you should have gotten a plan with a lower deductible. Can't afford one? Stop being poor.

Sounds like your mad because you have a high deductible plan? My wife has had an ovarian cyst before too and it was relatively easy to get it taken care of and I think we paid $0 out of pocket because we had enough for the $300 deductible and 20% copay in our healthcare account.

Either way, hope she feels better. As I stated, my wife has had one before and I have seen how painful they can be.

Sorry to hear of your family's health problems, but man is your aggression ever misplaced.

Insurance is provided through my employer.

My wife works for a local small business who does not provide health insurance.

I love these "Our healthcare system is screwed up so I hate poor people RAWR!" threads.

My wife could get better health care if we divorced and she quit her job.

But then again, we do not want to mooch off of the system.

Just went through the same thing here.

Was only able to pay for half of the up front fee until got paid two weeks later so they moved the surgery date till after I paid on full.

This is the Republican dream you support so not sure why you are whining.

This is just the way it works in America. You, as the middle class, have to pay for everything and work hard so that the "poor" can get stuff for free. This is why the middle class is disappearing.

Get better insurance or go to a doc that doesn't dick you around. I've never had to pay my deductible upfront.

Yeah because the Middle Class is slowing going to the poor house.

I'm not quite sure how to read your statement. Are you agreeing with me? Because the middle class is definitely shrinking, and it's not because they're going up a class. The middle class pays most of the taxes in the country, salaries have been stagnant for a long time, costs of good are rising, etc. All bad news for the middle class.

I agree that the Middle Class in this Country is in dire straits and is increasingly getting poorer look no further then the increasing poverty rates in the U.S.

And of course that is all those dirty poor folks fault.
