Okay TheVrolok I hate to do this but I'm going to anyway, Oprah killed it for the show. Definitely not the same.

Beware of buying the BBC version. It's encoded to 1080i/50, and many North American BD players can't play that format. For more info and a list of players that can play 1080i/50, see this thread.

I don't think I could stand to watch a nature documentary narrated by someone without a british accent. It's weird, I know.

i don't think that's too unusual...I grew up with that, too. Though I also grew up with Marty Stouffer--that's about as far from British as you can get!

I liked the two episodes last night. The frogs were kickass. But I agree with a recent radio review in that this series is a bit too dumbed-down. Doesn't help hearing it from Oprah, either. :(

Too much jumping around without a continuous theme.

for the first episode? that's the "Summary" episode for the entire series. Every other episode focuses on more specific areas (ep 2: reptiles and amphibians). The first basically takes bits and pieces from the rest of the series and meshes it into 1 show.

PE was the same.

Also, that "Earth" movie that was in theaters last summer was an extended summary of PE. same footage, people involved.

she's only one of the highest paid females in the history of this fucking planet.

Funny some refer to her as a media whore...lolz.

Looking forward to this show. She's done a lot of voice work for successful projects.

uh...she is absolutely a media whore. Most things she does, and she does do plenty of good things for plenty of people, she will do as long as she can further her name in the process.

I honestly don't have anything against Oprah, seriously--but it's quite obvious that her primary interest is advertising her name and image. Creating a model, as it were. have you seen her magazine? It's ridiculous.

that desert chameleon blew my mind. before oprah even mentioned the dark\light color it was holding, i knew wtf that chameleon was up too.

then those monkeys smashing those nuts with large rocks....evolution anyone?

I loved the camera work on the intro of the pebble toad. the scene with the pebble toad just minding his own business and the tarantula in the faded background was pretty good.

Yeah, I interpreted the Capuchin smashing nuts scene as a big Eff You! to all the fundies.

:D

haha same.

I'm at home with my parents for the week, and watched it with them.
I had to comment, "haha see primates are badass. We use tools!"

And I loved the quick discussion of culture, how the same animal species comes up with different things in different populations.
I added my own commentary, mentioning how Orcas do a similar thing with different "dialects" in the different populations.

Animals are awesome. :)

And I loved Planet Earth (never did watch all of them, but a great thing to watch when I'm in the mood and it's on), but I'm glad this is a different approach. Planet Earth had amazing cinematography for what it was doing, showing the varying regions and what populates them. Life, on the other hand, is more up close, showing the awesome ways various creatures go about their lives.
Some absolutely amazing footage in this series.

Saw the 1st episode last night. Thought it was awesome. I don't like Oprah, but her voice didn't bother me.

Yeah, I agree.

I was enrapt by the animals like the pebble toad, didn't pay a whole lot of attention to Oprah's voice. She wasn't distracting or particularly engaging as a narrator, but that's fine. If I purchase the set I'll go with the BBC/Attenborough one for sure, though.

shhh. he's trying to use that as "proof" that we aren't primates. :sneaky:

I don't mind being classified physically as a primate, though I do think we break the mould when it comes to our abilities.

There's a good reason we aren't shown as animals on programs like "Life" or "Planet Earth" ;)

The only difference between BBC and the US version is narration, correct?
some say there are a few different scenes that are included in the us and not the bbc, and vice versa. I'm going to have to sit through both to tell. I will definitely be getting the BBC version of life on bluray, but I really didnt mind oprahs voice last night when watching it on tv.
