I'll probably buy this tomorrow depending on what I hear about it. Sounds like a fun game but I have gambled and lost too many times with pre-orders.

Lot's of complaints on the Grimrock forum (finally got in) about the Steam pre-order.

Only a few comments on the game so far, but they're positive (as I expected).

.

I pre ordered as well.

I haven't read much about the game so not sure what to expect. I basically got it because a friend of mine wouldn't stop raving about how good its going to be. I guess I am hoping it's something like a Dungeons & Dragons style dungeon crawl game.

Will try to play soon as I get home

I'm seeing lots of positive comments on the game in both the Grimrock and GOG forums.

Not sure how big a deal this is, but on Steam it's currently the #1 Selling game.

EDIT:

Oh, a fix for Steam pre-orders seems to require restarting your Client or something along those lines it seems.

.

I see it's finally activated on Steam. Ugh, I have to wait until I'm home from work to play this one. Next few hours are gonna be long.

Played it a couple hours now... what I expected, fun game.

One thing, I have 2 mages and they're useless so far, until apparently I find scrolls.

I'm at the 2nd floor, blue stone area - there's a door with two locks, I used a key on one.

The only thing I can see for the second lock is the room where you push the plate and the door locks and then 3 skeletons come out.

If I'm lucky I can kill one skeleton - no way to kill the 3. Seems I might just be totally stuck here.

If people want a little more info - it's very much like the eye of the beholder playstyle, some of the same puzzles, mix of secret things, puzzles, combat.

Don't expect a lot of story - you're dumped in a dungeon, you're supposed to escape it.

You make 4 chars of Fighter, Rogue, Mage, usual stats, simple design. A few extras like picking two traits that add stat bonuses.

Save as you go if you don't want to repeat parts.

Real-time combat, just right-click the character when their attack comes up.

First two scrolls found are not for air or water....

Looking forward to jumping into this tonight. Have jury duty tomorrow, which means I don't care how tired I am, so it's going to be a late night 😀

Started playing this. Definitely a blast from the past with decent graphics. Already stuck and only 2 floors down 🙂 ahhh..the good old days.

I solved the problem above - you can learn spells before you find scrolls (not a spoiler, the manual says it). Now just can't find a key.

Of course I tried runes and found a spell, used it to kill the monsters, and then found a scroll with that spell.

Maybe it's because I didn't play a whole lot of them growing up, but why on earth would you want to be stuck to a quarter-turn and grid system in this day and age?

I really want this game, might have to treat myself to it tomorrow as a birthday present to myself.

I've read pretty much nothing but positive things from people so far that have played it.

It's fairly fun from what I've played. The limitations are part of what make it work. The puzzles wouldn't fit without them.

I've got a couple hours in now, taking it nice and slow - still on level one.

I'm really enjoying the game, I think they really did a good job.

I'll probably get a week or so out this one easily.

Don't know about replay yet, they're going to have an editor out in the next week or so, plus modability - could have quite a bit of longevity 😀

I already got stuck once on a play mechanic.

Where's the manual by the way? I have no idea how to use spell scrolls and such.

You don't use the scrolls. They just tell you combinations for spells if you don't figure them out yourself. (Those symbols when you right click your mage). The first one you get by default when you first cast. After that, you have to actually level up your character and give them points in the different elements to be able to use them. I learned poison cloud before I found the scroll for it, but couldn't use it because I had no points in Earth (for instance).

yeah, but you need to be the proper level to cast it, right?

You don't "use" scrolls, then only tell you the correct symbols to use for the spell listed on the scroll.

Right click on one of the mage's hands. a grid will pop up with symbols. Left Click (it will highlight) the symbol(s) of the spell you want to cast, then click on the blue orb just to the right of the grid.

Two things 1) scrolls only tell you the appropriate symbol(s) that need to be pressed for the desired spell. 2) You must be the appropriate level in the skill (air, earth, fire, or ice) to actually use the spell. So, it's possible to know it from a scroll, but you won't be able to use it until you use enough skill points to get to the correct level.

Hint
a rock is your friend. At least in that room.

I'm only on level two, but so far, so good. Brings back a ton of good memories of all the party based RPGS I used to play.

Now, if someone would just remake Bane of the Cosmic Forge, all would be well in the world.
