Was this guy drunk or something? I heard the recording and he could barely put a sentence together.

Get a guy drunk, start an argument with him, and then secretly record him saying stupid shit so you can crucify him in the media...

So much for privacy huh?

Just because you're married to someone of a different race doesn't mean you're not racist.

This is like "I have gay friends - therefore I'm not homophobic!"

This is an ignorant statement -- there is no way a pure racist would marry someone black, and have a child with them.

Being married to someone and being "friends" with them aren't anywhere near the same thing.

When the tape has been authenticated and proven to be him, I will then call him a racist and fully expect sanctions against him to be imposed.

You want authentication for something that the person whose voice is being authenticated hasn't even bothered to deny it.

Lol.

You once again don't seem to understand the difference between private sanction and government sanction. Your ignorance continues to impress me.

What is your point exactly?

You apparently have no issue with destroying people who secretly hold believes you dislike.

And let us remember that Don Sterling apparently did such a good job hiding his "secret racism" that the NAACP was set to give him an award.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/27/don-sterling-racist_n_5222268.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular

But his ex-gf(who is current being sued for embezzling money) managed to get him drunk and agitate him to saying something stupid so the guy should be completely and utterly destroyed.

What a display of tolerance!

I'm not even sure what you're babbling about anymore. People's actions have consequences.

Nice job desperately flailing in every direction though, I am not at all surprised that this thread caught your attention as it involves both women and minorities, your two most hated groups.

And what is your point. I was discussing the appropriateness of those consequences.

Is it appropriate to essentially want to completely destroy a guy because he said something stupid while drunk and agitated IN PRIVATE?

The idea that he is 'completely destroyed' by this is hilariously false. Do you have any understanding of who this guy is?

It is pretty funny that when someone is outed as a terrible person that you're supposed to pretend it never happened because he was terrible in private though. Hahaha.

Also, assuming this secret recording took place in California it would seem to have been done illegally:

California's wiretapping law is a "two-party consent" law. California makes it a crime to record or eavesdrop on any confidential communication, including a private conversation or telephone call, without the consent of all parties to the conversation. See Cal. Penal Code § 632. The statute applies to "confidential communications" -- i.e., conversations in which one of the parties has an objectively reasonable expectation that no one is listening in or overhearing the conversation. See Flanagan v. Flanagan, 41 P.3d 575, 576-77, 578-82 (Cal. 2002). A California appellate court has ruled that this statute applies to the use of hidden video cameras to record conversations as well. See California v. Gibbons, 215 Cal. App. 3d 1204 (Cal Ct. App. 1989).

Seems like if the tape is legit the gf should be spending sometime in jail. People's actions have consequences ;)

Fine by me, who cares? I mean I know you're really excited because that means that a woman is punished somehow, but I doubt anyone else in this thread cares about her.

Well seems like people are calling for him to lose his NBA franchise.

Lets see, GF gets you drunk and purposefully agitates you, and the illegally records you. Yep, seems totally appropriate you should lose your NBA team...

Yep the guy is so terrible he was going to get an award from the NAACP

Who cares? Apparently the California legislature for one. When they past a law protecting people's privacy.

But hey. Who cares about people's privacy when we have a chance to punish people for having non-liberal thoughts!

What is hard to understand here? If she broke the law she should face the consequences. It in no way changes the fact that this guy has been outed as a terrible human being. I still find it funny that you think we should pretend this didn't happen because his girlfriend recorded him illegally.

Well that depends on where the conversation is taking place. Generally you lose the "reasonable expectation of privacy" in a public or semi-public place.

I don't believe it's been established where the conversation has taken place and I'm certain that Mr. Sterling hasn't come out to acknowledge that it took place in a private setting.

While in public or semi-public doesn't give a complete pass, it has to be taken into consideration before it can be deemed a criminal violation.

Oh no, the billionaire might be forced to sell his extraordinarily valuable franchise that he bought for $12.5 million that is now worth almost $600 million. I'm pretty sure that fits everyone's definition of "completely destroyed". What a joke.

Yep the guy is so terrible he was going to get an award from the NAACP

I was unaware that an award from the NAACP made this tape not exist.

Lets see. A lifetime of public life so free of racism the NAACP gives you an award.

Saying something stupid while drunk and your black gf is purposefully agitating you so she can make an illegal recording to get back at you for suing her for embezzling over a million dollars.

Yeah, gee, I wonder what I should give more weight to? :hmm:

They decided not to give him the award after learning that he was terrible. What's hard to understand about this?

No, I just promote people's freedom to associate and do business with whomever they choose. You apparently want to force people to do business with those they find objectionable. I guess I'm just more interested in freedom than you are.

The part where one stupid drunk statement made while being purposefully agitated by a vindictive ex-gf outweighs the rest of his life?

I don't think there is any real question the tape is authentic or that Sterling actually said these things. Sterling's publicists have confirmed that it is him on the tape and that it is possible the tape is authentic - if they believed it was fake or altered they would be shouting that from the rooftops. I am also unconvinced by the arguments of our resident woman-hater that this was somehow entrapment by the girlfriend - it's clear from what Sterling says that this topic (her appearing in public with black people) has been a longstanding concern of Sterling's. Sterling's track record as a douchebag is also well-established - this is not his first rodeo when it comes to making outrageous and racist comments.

All of that being said, I find the tapes, and the entire situation, very strange and hard to understand. I do think Sterling harbors racist views, but he is also paying a black head coach the highest salary in the league, and has a longstanding romantic relationship with a black/Mexican woman. Honestly I find the whole thing very confusing. In any case, unless the tapes really were altered, which I feel is unlikely, I expect Sterling will be squeezed out of the NBA, and I am fine with that.

I was unaware that being drunk was an excuse for your actions. It is for each person and group to decide what it means to them that the owner of a team that is comprised mostly of black players says that he doesn't want black people to come to games, etc.
