My grades were just posted. 4 A's and 2 B's. Pretty upset about one of my B's but oh well. My GPA went down from a 3.8 to a 3.73 :(

Yup, I'm plenty dumb for not wasting 18 hours of my life copying 15 pages of bullshit that contributes little to my understanding of the subject. You're right, it's quite dumb being purpose driven these days. It's all about following directions, or should I say, doing all the bullshit you're told to do. Fvck the purpose.
I'm just glad I only had to put up with one professor out of the three years of my college career with this mindset.

Not going to argue with you on how important homework should be, but is 18 hours really that bad to gain a whole letter grade? I mean really, 15% of homework that can be copied out of the books? that's like free points. And plus, it doesn't seem you did all that much studying anyway seeing how your exam grades weren't that good.

From rumour Organic Chem is supposed to be one of the hardest courses offered at my university.

Astrophysics is supposed to be pretty bad too.

I got a C(77%) in my chem class.
Got an 87% on the final, 88% average on lab, 75% average on exams. But here's the kicker, I have a 40% average on homework that accounts for 15% of my grade. If it weren't for the homework, I would be getting a B, easily. The homework involves copying answers from the back of the book, so it's not like it proves my competency in the class.
I'm going to talk to the science dean about it, see if I could get my grade bumped up.
Has anyone been in a similar situation?

It is your fault, stop blaming somebody else and looking for excuses.

It's not about who's fault or who's to blame(did I even blame anyone?). It's about being rational.
Your grade isn't there to reflect your effort, it's there to reflect how well you understand the material. I haven't had one single professor that wouldn't have given me a B based on my final grade/lab grade.
My physics professor dropped my homework grade, as it dropped my overall grade by 5%. My last chem professor gave me a B since I had an 88% exam average, but a 15% homework average.
Your kind of thinking is what's wrong with the education system. The education system is about learning, not doing a bunch of busy work.

Did everybody else do their busy work? Yes.
Did it pay off for them? Yes it did.

Well why didn't you?

I think busy work is dumb. Wastes everyone's time. No one should spend time doing things just to get a grade. They should spend time to learn the material. If work isn't needed to learn the material, it should be ignored.

Exactly.
Your goal in school is to learn, not to carry out tasks from a boss.

College is about growing up, something you obviously haven't done. Have fun sticking it to the man and pumping gas the rest of your life.

I'm so glad my college doesn't deal with the +/- thing like we did in high school. Now I only have to worry about hitting that 90% for an A. I got all A's this semester :) I was really worried about one class and very thankful that it came out all right.

Well let's see... my cumulative GPA is somewhere between an A and a B, closer to the B side. I'm a sophomore at Duke who had no clue what he was doing and has finally decided on what he wants to major in/pursue as a career. Yeah, I think my final GPA will be closer to an A now that I care ;)

Try almost failing a class your last semester. I got a D+ to pass .... but that was after correcting a bunch of errors on my teacher's part with grades.

I got my last grade in today. Two A's and two BC's. One of the BCs was in a class where the prof was useless. She gave us our grade breakdown in mid-November, when over half of our grade had already been calculated. She never gave any direction on assignments, and wasted everyone's time.

Quite honestly I have never understood how students who put forth a genuine effort get low grades in courses. Granted the university I graduated from was known for substantial grade inflation, but I spent my freshman year at Cal Tech where the grading curve is pretty steep, and C's were still, though pretty common, an indication that the student is not putting in enough work. I think that if you do all the assigned readings/homework, attend lecture, walk into every test feeling well prepared, and, most importantly, go to office hours, there should be no excuse for not pulling at least a B.

I just keep my expectations super low now; *hit yourself for failing, then when grade pops up with something good, laugh it off. This term has been crappy and full of slacking. Took 6 instead of 5 courses last year, held a job, had long classes and still spent more time studying. Right now, just hoping I passed Steel and Timber Design(anything over 50, I don't care). Class average on mid-term was sub 50% before being ramped to a 60%, and final did not go well.

Oh, and if you can't do 18 hours of homework through a semester, I doubt you've ever held an entry level job (any at all?). All the crap I've done has been mundane and repetitive, it didn't teach anything 'intelligent'. Reminds me of an old coworker who was like this. She did nothing to contribute to a summer job project. Her reason? It's useless, won't be used, bla bla, which is all true and the rest of the team knew it. I wouldn't work with this person again, hell, if I could, I'd make sure all her employers knew this. Also, this same person was badmouthed by a previous supervisor for not doing work. However, this awesome supervisor (was mines for a while too) was nice enough to hold back from telling the boss about her work ethic before she was rehired that year. Personally, I don't give a ****** about how smart you are. There's a 99.9% chance there's someone just as smart if not smarter who will take it up the ass, and just do what they're told. That 0.01% goes to the Einsteins and Von Brauns.

Before I came to the school I'm at now, really tough engineering school, I had only had 2 B's in college, CC. My perspective on grades is different now.

Well, I'm working on my MBA right now and will be graduating in August (finally!). This is my 8th year in college, so I'm definitely ready to be done (school takes so much longer when you have to work full-time). I'm not really sure what I'm going to do after I graduate. I'm working in IT right now, but I kind of fell into the position and don't really have any certification or anything like that. The experience will help and I might be able to land an IT management position, but it'll just depend on what's out there when I start job hunting. Eventually I want to start my own business or open a franchise.

I'm also thinking about moving to Colorado after graduation. I'm taking a trip there in a couple weeks to visit Colorado Springs, Denver/Boulder, and Fort Collins for a week to see if I'd like to move to any of those places. I'll also be spending a week skiing at Copper Mountain. I'm quite thrilled about the snow storm they're getting right now!

In principle I agree with you, but this can't be done in a vacuum. You need to get buy in from the professor in this case. Go to him before the start of the course and ask for you total grade to exclude the homework. Otherwise it looks to him like it looks to us - that astroidea slacked on the homework and doesn't want it to hurt him.

What's most disconcerting to me is that he could do so well without doing the homework. I learned early on in University that homework is important for its ability to teach you the concepts that the course is trying to convey.

Either the course is too easy or the homework is really a waste of time. Either way I think the students lose.

What's up with the hippy attitude toward this? Just DO IT for pete's sake. Who cares whether or not it's busy work!? I went through 4 years of college, I received my fair share of busy work and I still did it. You need to drop the immature mentality.

Oh and my last semester of college was all A's :p. Lucky for me, I AP'd out of both intro Chem courses so I didn't have to take a single science course in college (bar Computer Science, since that was my major and it's considered Math).

Dude, rh71, I had the weirdest dream one time where my high school said I magically missed an English class somewhere and I had to come and complete it (and in this dream, I am where I am now (i.e. graduated college, have a job, etc)). It was crazy and kind of scary at the same time :Q.

Hippy attitude? Having a purpose driven attitude is being a hippy? Do you think maturity comes from doing meaningless things just for the sake of doing it? Have you been brainwashed?
Maturity means taking responsibility. Doing meaningless work for the sake of doing it doesn't equate taking responsibility. Your attitude of what responsibility means is why the education is fvcked up today.
Education has been tailored for stupid people that can't fvcking use their brains anymore than to carry out tasks and follow directions.
In math, you are taught how to mindlessly do each problem step by step - how to plug numbers in equations, etc, rather than being taught the concepts to actually have an understanding of why a problem is solved a certain way. Even math, something based on concrete logic and reasoning, has almost become mostly arbitrary memorization(aka mindless work) from the way it's taught in schools.
The fact that I don't like to waste my time doing busy work that contributes to a shallow understanding of a subject, makes me immature? The fact that I don't like to learn the same shallow way as everyone else, makes me immature?
You need to drop the braindead bandwagon mentality.
