I can't stand the Yankees as a team, but it saddens me to see how Torre has been treated by George. Torre is a total class-act and I have all the respect in the world for him.

I know the commentators keep beating this to death, but some people aren't going to realize how good he was at putting out fires until he's gone. He's been making it look easy for so long, and that job has become a higher-profile job during his tenure with all the success they've had, the emergence of a true competitive rivalry with Boston, and increased ESPN coverage.

Good luck finding a new guy who's anywhere near as good at dealing with the media weasels.

What, Joe Girardi won't be as good as Torre? C'mon! Dude told his owner to shut his piehole during a game. What makes you think he won't be able to handle a few media flies. Good luck to that.

Peace

Torre just declined the Yankees offer of $5 million/year (down from $7 million) with postseason incentives of $1 million per round of playoffs/WS. Meaning he could have made $8 million if they won the WS.

I'm a little sad to see him go, he was a total class-act and I believe an excellent manager.
Wow that was a fair offer IMO. Oh well fuck the Yankees I hope they suffer;)

It was a 1 year offer.

Being in your element and exerting control of the show during the 3 hours your club is on the field isn't the same as dealing with 50 morons asking the same question 50 different ways trying to create a controversy about why Jeter and A-rod don't eat the same breakfast cereal, or whatever they decide to invent that day.

But Girardi probably would do a better job of it than some of the other names that are floating around.

Good luck yankees... next year you might win 30 games.

Newflash: TB fired Dungy and then won the Super Bowl the next year under Grudin. AND How many playoffs have the bucs been to since then? and how many superbowls after the 1st? (Newsflash: You dont hire a coach to get to 1 world series then suck... you want someone who can win year after year after year...) Considering recent events, it's too early to declare the Chargers a bust. They'll probably win the AFC West again. After that who knows... it doesnt matter who the yankees hire next, if he cant match what Torre did, then the Steinbrenners look like major moronic assholes.

Maybe you shouldn't post in sports threads?
Or am I missing the sarcasm?

FWIW... It would have been far more respectful of the Yankees to just let Torre go and say they wanted to head in a new direction than to pull this crap.

Really? Most of my friends who are Yankees fans have been calling for his head for a while.

Still, I am sad to see Joe go. Thanks for a great 12 years

I think it's safe to say the Yankee fans are probably some of the biggest idiots out there in fandom.

I think its safe to say you are an idiot, and mis informed.

The "idiots" that you refer to are the fairweather Yankee fans that became "fans" in the mid-90's... Every team that consistently wins has them..

So, Mariano Rivera had said he's leaving if they didn't keep Joe. Well? Is he going?

He'd look awful nice with an Olde English D on his chest.

So what's the time limit to being a fan if 13+ years isn't good enough

It was time for a change. Now I hope they can find someone to spur them on to greater things.

Unless the manager will be on the field every 5th day tossing a ball, change their ain't gonna do much. When you're the #1 batting team in the league and in the lower half for pitching, tell me exactly what manager induced change you would do to change that.

Torre's going to have a tough time finding another job with that kind of price tag. Most managers make under $1 million, let alone $5+ million.

I think he was ready to move on. The Yanks offered him a real decent deal, but I don't think he was going to accept any offer.

Just checked the manager paychart. half make under 1 mil, the rest make between 1 mil and 3.5 mil. The ones under are fairly obvious, with the exception of Little with the Dodgers (could help explain their suckiness). But I'm fairly certain he could pull 2mil+ where ever he went, and not have to worry about a 1 year contract.

was he unhappy with the contract or the salary?
i think it was more than fair, given the lack of performance by the yankees in recent years. $5M is a lot for a mgr.
