I was assuming the lawn-chair (maybe cast-iron rather than plastic?) was bolted to the ground? Pretty strong bolts, all the same.

This is SO true but without modern Agriculture that six inches of topsoil would mean nothing. IMO modern Agriculture is one of mankind's greatest achievements.
