Conan should just dig his heels in and accept the deal - just to deny Leno TTS... This whole farce is all about Leno getting that show back...

Everyone forgets that when Leno took over TTS, his ass was getting kicked by Letterman - and what helped him was the growing strength of NBC's primetime lead-in shows, especially the thursday night lineup that allowed him to start picking up viewership..

Another thing to consider- Jay is 59. How long is he going to stay around? If NBC puts all of it's eggs in one basket, how long will it keep the basket?

I though it was Hugh Grant which helped Leno :)

I still have a hard time believing people find Leno funny. He's just a big doofus and not funny at all. Not saying Conan is hilarious or anything but I stopped watching NBC after 10pm once they put Leno on there. So I don't watch Conan's later show either.

Leno is the only late night person I could actually go see do a stand up show in Vegas, not a talk show. But Jay doing jokes for an hour. Letterman use to do stand up, but he obviously sucked at it because he doesn't any more. The fact Leno can still sell out concerts tells me he's funny.

Leno is by far the only legitimate funny dude on late night TV, Fergerson has his moments but no way in hell could be sell out a big stand up show in Vegas, hell he's probably never even done stand up.

Man, even though their primetime quality has dropped I at least liked their late night programming. But it seems NBC is content on messing with that with their 'winning' formula as well.

Conan is not remotely funny...just like Letterman. A lot of Leno's jokes are dumb but at least he seems like a pretty nice guy.

I don't know what is on FOX late night for a lot of you, but where I'm at it's full of King of the Hill and Seinfeld reruns.

Fox is the perfect station for Conan, and I know I would watch him a lot more often if he was on Fox.

My local Fox station plays the news at 9pm, while all the other networks play their stupid crime scene shows, so if I'm watching TV I will always watch the local news on fox. Then at 10pm Seinfeld is on, followed by the Simpsons, followed by family guy and king of the hill or whatever midnight show they throw on. If I watch fox news at 9pm, no way I am going switch the channel back for the 10 o'clock news. By the time Conan is on I'm already into the simpsons or family guy and forget Conan is on.

If Conan moves to fox and hits around the 10:30 or 11pm slot after an episode of the simpsons or family guy I think it would allow him to go back to his old raunchy skits and be a huge success.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.
There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.
Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,
Conan

Conan is great. I don't know if it would be possible, but I'd like to see him on Comedy Central w/ Colbert and Stewart.

It is funny how people that have done nothing but bash him have been coming around saying "Hey....he's actually pretty cool."

Don't know if that statement is actually real...but if it is, nice job :D

All of a sudden they decide after (how many years?) that they should reschedule the tonight show. Like said in the statement, "The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show"

He's always been cool. Conan "takes a while" to warm up to his audience. It took him a few years before he found his mark at 12:35. Hell, it took Jay Leno a few years to get it right on the Tonight Show.

Networks don't have that kind of patience anymore, unfortunately.

Very nicely put from Conan.

I love this line:

"My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work."

That obviously isn't NBC.

If NBC handles this properly, it could actually turn out to be a huge boost for them. They're getting tons of publicity. Conan is acting more like his old self, although there's still something very off about the show right now. I watched last night, and the interaction with the guests is really not as good. He should tell NBC to let him take the reigns off and see how people react. Either his ratings will tank or they will rocket up.

Wow, everybody is taking pot-shots at Leno too. Sounds like he's pissed off a lot of people in the business on what would be his side. Of course, he's got assloads of money and, previously, ratings to show for it.

I actually kinda like Letterman's idea (he still sucks, it took him five and a half minutes to do what Conan and even Leno did in about one, thanks to Schaefer and his own bumbling way of repeating shit over and over). Why not let Leno do 15-20 minutes of stand-up before the Tonight Show comes on, and then let Conan do his own thing? Instead of moving to 11:35 and 12:05, let Leno go on at 10:45, and the Tonight Show at 11:05?

Too bad Carson isn't around to straighten things out. He'd be one helluva mediator for this situation.

The split show is a terrible idea. And while Carson was great at the Tonight Show, he sure didn't get involved with the Dave vs Jay fight that ensued after his retirement, so I seriously doubt he'd get involved here either.

Now THAT'S how you stick it to NBC. I don't think his response could have been crafted any better.

Ball's in your court, NBC.

Who ever is running NBC is a dumb fuck. What are they going to do for the 10:00pm slot now? I'm not holding my breath that they will find any good shows at that time slot. They will need 5 more shows for the week.

Check this out NBC is going to lose couple a couple hundred million bucks on the winter olympics eh
http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=120422

What they should do is get Howard Stern but no one has the balls to do it. He always talked about how he would kill all these guys.
