It's really tough to get a high school diploma in Texas

That explains a few things around here. 😛 🙂

HOUSTON—What if we told you that your family dog could graduate from school? Not obedience school, but a program that awards high school diplomas. Sound incredible?
It’s what the I-Team discovered can happen at some private schools that critics say are really diploma mills. And a Texas law is actually helping these businesses thrive.
Just ask 20-year-old Brooke Hire.
“I was crying, I cried I was so proud,” she said after receiving her diploma from Parkview Baptist School.
“I was the third person in my whole entire family to ever get my high school diploma,” Hire said.

With it, she thought she could fulfill her dream of joining the Navy. But then, her recruiter dropped a bomb.
“It was worth absolutely nothing, absolutely nothing,” Hire said.
The Navy did not accept Parkview Baptist’s diploma. It’s a school that’s located in an office building on the Southwest Freeway—a school that Hire said didn’t seem to care about her homework.

So... a dog can get a legitimate high school diploma in Texas. Amazing!

There have been "colleges" like this for years, I didn't realize that they had dropped down to the high school level.

I work for a secondary education institution and have talked to many employees that have dealt with dozens of online diploma mills that kids are suckered into. They usually charge $200+ dollars to have you take a quick online quiz/assessment and then you are awarded a "high school diploma" for "life skills." Makes me sick.

It's pretty easy to tell which ones are fake. Real schools or real school programs don't advertise.

Real schools advertise bullshit programs like woman studies or whatever. Have you ever seen a TV commercial or radio commercial for electrical engineering? How about mechanical engineering? How about med school? Does Yale advertise?

I thought University of Phoenix was fairly legit. Isn't one of those online colleges somewhat respected?

No pets left behind?

this is what happens when we let this backwards state be the foundation for our national public education system.

Yeah, University of Phoenix is accredited. I know somebody that took some coursework there and they had to bust their balls to get a decent grade.

Univ. of Phoenix is unnecessarily getting a bad rep because of baseless internet bandwagon and snowball effect.

It's an accredited school, it's a real degree. Some here say crap like "I'll never hire anyone that went there." etc. What a stupid thing to say.

<-- Never went to UoP.

No, not really

University of Phoenix is big coorp diploma milling at the collegiate level. They have their name on a freaking NFL stadium.

They are not really in the business of education.

accredited by what?

Do you think that if you got a degree in IT or any kind of Engineering from UoP, that it would be fully accredited?

I know the answer to that...

Oh, and they get a bad rap because of fact-based fraud:

Western Governors University is an online accredited university

I'm not aware of other online based college programs that are accredited but there are probably others out there.

All the time.
I guess you never watch college sports.

Never seen a college football game? I'm sure they do it during other sports too...

Uh.. Post fail by you.

UoP IS accredited by one of the 6 regional accrediting associations. You know, the only 8 legit regional accredition associations in the US. Yes thats right, UoP is accredited by the same people(North Central Association of Colleges and Schools) that give accreditation to the likes of Notre Dame, University of Chicago, and Northwestern University.

UoP is the one of the only online schools, other than maybe Governors, that is accredited by one of the 6 regional accreditation associations. So are some other pretty shitty schools to. Accreditation is just a mimimum standard set by the Department of Ed and the Council for Higher Learning.

Regional accreditation good. National accreditation bad. But just becuase it doesn't have a certain specialty accreditation, like ABET, doesn't mean its not accreditated.

There are a plenty of traditional non-profit on site accreditated college/universities that are just as bad and some even worse than UoP. Yeah I am looking at you, 4th tier no name state schools, as well as most HBCUs.

Sadly, primary and secondary schools are losing regional accreditation left and right.

In California, the GED testing runs somewhere between $150 and $200.

Y'know Doc, there's a story about the janitor in NYC who had to have brain surgery.
Once they got him on the operating table, the surgeon decided that it would be easier if he removed the brain and worked on it at his work bench.
While he was working, the patient got off the table and walked away.
He disappeared without a trace for about 6 months...then he finally surfaced.
He was teaching high school in Texas...

😛

No, you simply aren't reading.

some of their programs are accredited: want a nursing degree? fine.

want to get a BS or MA in any kind of Engineering or IT field--well, if you want it accredited by those fields, then don't go to UoP. Of course, you wouldn't know it by depending on the marketing from UoP--which most of their money goes to. They are accredited by certain systems, for only specific areas, but they'll have you believe they are fully accredited across the board.

...this is a blatant lie.

And don't forget the lawsuits that they have already paid out for their highly-publicized recruitment violations. Something, that they seem to be doing again.

it's a diploma machine. it is not an education-driven business.

Seriously: Colleges do not buy naming rights for a fucking professional athletics stadium

Lol bullshit. I should take pics of all the university swag outside my kids high school guidence office. Or all the billboards for various college/universities in colorado. Or all the radio spots I hear daily for Colorado States new online programs. Oh lets not forget all the signs at bus stops and on the sides of buses and cabs.

You need to get out more or start paying attention.
