yea, antec is still in the running

holy cow, this is the hardest choice ive run into so far
(last time i built i paid $20 for some gawdy piece of crap off of ebay)


svi - when i said a couple i meant more then three, i was thinking along the lines of 4 or so (yes, i know in a gaming rig its silly, but im just saying, its good to keep options open)

sli is worthless (see 6800gt or ultras in sli being beaten by a cheaper 1 card solution, the 7800gtx) you don't need a 600w psu to run 5+ hard drives. if you have a good 450w psu and 1 video card you can easily run raid5. i'm currently running 5 hard drives of a 350w psu.

well, SLI isnt completely worthless, but im just saying, i want to keep every available upgrade path open, and i dont want the PSU to come into play in the future (when it comes time to upgrade)
id rather spend the money now, then have to later on (especially since you cant re-sell PSU's for good money)
 
ribbon13 tried both a Seasonic 600watt and a PC P&C 510 on his rig and said he preferred the Seasonic.

Well, if you inexplicably decide to turn your rig into a combination ultra-high-bandwidth file server and CAD/CAM workstation, something with the power capability of a 400W Zippy would still do you just fine. Not even the need to cover wholly unreasonable scenarios can reasonably justify "600W" power supplies.

did he say what was better about it?
they both have the same rated effiency (seasonic was 99.5%, PCP&C was 99% when i was looking reviews) and they both can hold thier voltages like no other

I think ribbon just liked that the Seasonic was quieter.

You can see from ribbon's that both these PSUs can handle a ton of stuff, and would be more than enough for you.

What's the big deal about it being sleeved?

nothing really, i dont mind sleeving it (which im going to) but i dont look forward to sleeving the 20pin power cord (shutter)

sleeving it will just help make my system cleaner (tsunami case with window)
 
We're in the realm of insanity now. Overkill was achieved hours ago. There are numerous psus in the 450-500W range that are excellent and able to more than meet your needs. Pick one.

It will come with a plastic coil thing you can wrap around the cords... and it also comes with like 20 mini zip ties to keep the cables together... but yeah, it wont look as nice.

Ok, since i have every other single piece finalized, im taken a step back and am going to sleep on it tonight

every PSU is still in the game, ill just decide tomorrow (hopefully)

two that really stick out for price though are the Aerocool Turbine and the Tagan, but both have mixed feelings from people (the Aerocool is only recieving negative because its a fairly new PSU)
 
Ok, so im not going with the PCP&C anymore, because after looking furthur, a Seasonic (any type) can do just as good as it

right now i cant decide which brand to at least get (im trying to find the maker, then decide on the exact model of PSU)

im choosing between Seasonic, Enermax, Antec, CoolerMaster, Aerocool, OCZ and ePower (tagan)

who should i at least look at first (ie, what company would most likely have the best rails, amps, stability, etc)
 
My aerocool is due to arrive tomorrow or wednesday. Maybe some firsthand photos and experience with it will change your mind.... MTBF is over rated. I have several $35 psus with 50,000+ hours on them. That's 8 years of nearly constant use. And 8 years down the road, this PC will be relegated to a internet surfing machine anyhow, and you'll be obsessing over the psu for the next machine.... if you haven't bought the "next machine" by then already. 🙂
 
You have an interesting definition of "nearly constant use", meatball. To be fair, 8 years with some downtime is actually more impressive than 8 years going between load and idle.

Also, in 8 years, his screaming high-end machine might even be below internet box on the PC ladder. Gateway box, maybe, or keychain parts candidate. Wasn't the Klamath Pentium II all the rage 8 years ago? The only use I have for the things now is sticking them in my SNES and giggling. Ah, slot processors.

Moving back on topic, BCJ, I agree with meatball that we are now in the Realm of Insanity, a frozen Northern wilderness inhabited only by wolves and PCP&C fanboys. You'll probably be happy with any decent 400W-500W PSU you get, and your odds of being unhappy do not vary with PSU choice (afaict). Roll 2d6.

Well since im waiting for paypal to transfer my funds to my bank account before i order anything, ill wait for your results/review (please PM me as soon as you test it out and run it under a load, id very interested to see how it does)

And svi, i think were back out of that realm, now were in the normal realm.

The enermax Noisetaker 480W is looking good to me right now, as is the Aerocool Turbine, OCZ Powerstream (although its only single rail), but the Coolermaster 550W looks really good also.
Cant forget the Antext Truepower II, or the Seasonic SLI
 
No offense, but 550W PSUs are definitely the borderlands to that wilderness.

Also, don't say that a PSU is "only single rail". There is actually no real PRACTICAL difference between single-rail and dual-rail PSUs. In theory, dual-rail PSUs can be set up to provide cleaner power to certain parts.. but in practice, this is very difficult to do (and not just because it's rarely clear which rail goes to which molex), and not worth the effort given the extent of the voltage regulation that more sensitive parts get. I suppose you could say that single-rail PSUs are better in that you don't run the risk of overloading a weak +12V rail, but that's like saying that slot CPUs are better than socket ones because they're more difficult to accidentally swallow (in other words, not a risk you should worry about).

Take a look at SPCR's recommended PSU listing. You might not be aiming for silence, but they recommend high-quality PSUs, and you can't have too little noise.
 
hmm, so far every list ive looked at has reccomended a Seasonic or Enermax, so thats what im gonna focus on

Of course, the highest model i can get of either is a 600W SLI, and ill work from there (probably gonna stay with either the Noisetaker 480W or a similar wattage Seasonic)


And i was under the impression that dual rails were the ub0r thing to have, but obviously not, thanks for the clarification.
