You could make an argument for California, Hawaii, Texas, and Alaska all for different reasons.

New York. It's got the greatest city in the history of mankind with beautiful skiing/hiking/hunting a few hours away, an ocean on the other side and it's relatively close to DC - my personal favorite US city. Fuck the haters.

I think we can all agree that in the terrible category it's safe to list Vermont, Mississippi, Alabama, North and South Dakota, Montana and Utah. They all suck in their own wonderful ways.

My vote for worst state is Rhode Island, because it is so freaking small. At least other useless states have more room, so you could at least use it as a giant landfill.
