Well, if you have a child's perspective, no, Texas isn't cool....it's full of hicks and oil pumps and barren wasteland. But it's unquestionably the most business friendly state in the country. When businesses leave California, Texas is the most frequent destination. It's also a state with tons of options for hunters. Housing is affordable, but it also has many large cities. BBQ there is beef instead of pork. The liberties offered to individual citizens is higher than any other state. It's closer to real Mexico as opposed to filthy Baja Mexico.
Again, you could make the argument that economy and civil liberties are two of the primary things that make a state great.

Oregon has stunning beaches, high deserts, lush valleys, kick-ass mountains (and ranges), the Columbia gorge, etc and so on.
We also sport one of the most progressive cities in the country in Portland (little Beirut), and also vast agricultural areas. We got the hippies, rednecks, business tycoons, environmental activists, christians, intel, nike, and several large universities. Something for everyone here.
It's sorta like California without the Californians or cost of living. That's of course changing what with the last 20 years of Californian immigration.
A lot of this stuff could be said for WA state too, but I don't live there anymore so screw it.
Plus we got RossMAN.
We also sport one of the most progressive cities in the country in Portland (little Beirut), and also vast agricultural areas. We got the hippies, rednecks, business tycoons, environmental activists, christians, intel, nike, and several large universities. Something for everyone here.

Heading there this weekend. The same can be said for SoCal except I'm sure it's even warmer there right now. I remember visiting one winter where I was in a thin long sleeve coming from NorCal and when I got there I was sweating because it was upper 70s ><

the nicest people you will ever meet (in public)
massive industry explosion and will surpass michigan in car manufacturing and other states in importing/exporting. rising in the tech industry too (bham, mobile, and hunstville, at least)

diverse culture (those who don't live in the south don't understand, they only see stereotypes)
no celebs
cons:
hot and humit
too many stupid stereotypes about Alabamians

please, LA really needs to be annexed into mexico. i think i might hate LA more than CA, the dumbest people in the world (almost) reside in NO
none of us has lived in every state or even visited all 50 states, not really a good competition because its just filled with xenophobia. The results are funny because the huge states have the most votes and the small ones have the least, big suprise!

Where is the option for Canada? Everyone knows we are the best state; everyone else is just looking up at us, except for Alaska which looks at us with sidelong glances.

LA is not horrible, I think Mississippi is worse overall. I am glad to say that I dont live there anymore, and the only reason I visit is because of work and to see my friends/family.
I live in Texas now, which is a way better state.

Alaska has a feeling of being the better northerners than you Canucks. Cuz they truly are American and they probably don't trust the Canadian tank commander. Alaska is ripe for taking with their oil and being secluded from the mainland. So they've got them shifty eyes. Don't confuse them eyes with eyes of desire.

Cali has a HUGE economy. I consider a "useless" state as being one which, if it suddenly were to disappear, everyone would take weeks to notice.

Well, technically I haven't been to Alaska quite yet, but I'm SURE that some people here have visited all 50.
That's a good point, actually. Plus it's a MUCH bigger state than Texas or Alaska, so they both have to STFU. And by virtue of being so large, it has a much broader range of culture and landscape than any other state in the US.
However, it also has French Canadians.
Still, considering that Texas and Cali are the two competitors in the poll, Texas has more Texans and Cali has more Californians than Canada has French Canadians, so the advantage goes to Canada.
OP, add Canada to the poll, I'll vote for it!

The only reasons people think California is worthless are the following:

It's funny, I've been in all of the top 3 for extended periods (lived there at least 6 months in 2 out of the 3), and I consider them 3 of the 5 worst states in the nations.
