Well if it's abuse then obviously not.
The problem is defining abuse.
My mom flew off the handle & slapped me a couple times when I was growing up, was I abused?

no, i wouldn't say that was abuse. but by today's standards child protective services may have taken you out of your home for that.Originally posted by: Viper GTS

there is no excuse for outright beatings.Originally posted by: her209
Discipline I can understand. Outright beatings for no apparent reasons... grrr.
a swat on the butt isn't beating someone.Originally posted by: RSMemphis
There is no excuse for hitting anyone. Be it child or adult.
Beating is bad, mmkay?

Did I say it was? No.
The topic title states to the point of abuse.
I slight swat is ok, got them when I was young, too. But parents need to not underestimate their own strength, either.
you said "there is not excuse for hitting anyone". which i took to mean you were talking about any kind of contact.Originally posted by: RSMemphis

While I am a firm believer in spanking I am surprised at all the ppl in this thread that condone smacking a child across the face.
To me, that is a horrible thing to do. It is not only painful, but it is humiliating and demeaning.
And the reasoning I use for spanking are clear and defined terms. With VeggieFrog... if she broke something or screwed up in school or did something stupid, it was not reason to hit. I had the 3D rule. now matter what she did wrong, we would talk about it, and if need be, there would be punishment. But if she was Disprecpectful, Disobedient or Defiant... she I would play the gong on her ass.
I believe... and this is hard to explain in this limited mediummm... that children should respect and fear their parents. Not fear as is cowering, but having the knowledge to realize that if they break certain rules there will be an ass whooping. Not the fear that leaves them hiding in their room, or afraid to come home or anything like that... but fear is in telling themselves "if i do that, my mom will bubble my ass".
I tend to find that the parents that do not believe in spanking their kids under any circumstances are usually the kids that are screeching at the tops of thier lungs in a supermarket or raising hell in a restuarant while their parents think they are teaching them a lesson by ignoring them thru it.
When we were younger, my parents (I don't know which one) slapped my bro across the face. Left a large purple hand on his face. :QOriginally posted by: KarenMarie
