Is the USA the best country to live in?

Page 4 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.
This thread of course would turn this way with Euros arguing with Americans about how 'great' thier country is.

We've already established that pretty much everybody (unless thier country sucks) thinks thier home country is the best.

However, many non-Americans just cannot stand Americans talking together about what makes thier country great in thier opinion.
It seems to be quite okay for people from nearly any country to have pride in and love thier country but when Americans do the same it must be stopped.

Strange.

It goes both ways though. Though Anandtech is located in the US, it is on the internet, not really located anywhere. The question asked is open to all who read it, so contrary opinions are par for the course. I agree with you though, our opinions are dependent on where we are, were raised, less so where we have been, and virtually not where we haven't been.

Australia is a better place to live.

Thats IMHO, and keep in mind I have never been to the USA, but just from what I've heard.
Australia is great. Little Crime, fresh air, open spaces, green hills, no bustling smoggy cities. Lame reasons, I know.

But many deadly snakes, spiders & crocs 😉 😀

Cheers,

Well I live in Northern Ireland/England (uni) and it's crap here! I'd live almost anywhere else except America (no offense intended but I have serious issues with Bush at the minute)

Actually, SOME europeans don't mind the Americans who think their country is great, and SOME americans don't mind Europeans that think their country is great, obviously you have a problem with it, which basically makes you a hypocrite...

But it goes both ways, as sandorski said, i don't know how many times i have heard about the crappy "socialist europe" in this forum...

I think Sweden is a better country than the US (and i have lived in both countries), that is my opinion, yours may differ, and that is ok... you should be more concerned with the americans who don't think that the US is the best country to live in...

I hear New Zealand is nice, If I were seriously considering leaving (which I am not), getting into an area like that where LOTR was shot would be ideal for me.

I have always wondered why people say that "freedom is the best in USA". I live in a free country, I have all the freedoms I could want. Well, we don't have the right to carry guns in public, but that right is pretty low on my list of priorities. We have no PATRIOT acts, no DMCA (at least yet)... So I'm forced to ask: how exactly is USA "more free" than Finland for example?

-Bill of rights (even though pretty watered down over the past 150 years) is still something that sets us apart from europe.

How in practise does that give you more freedom than the finnish constitution gives to me for example? I have freedom of religion, freedom of speech, political freedom, freedom to move inside the country, freedom to leave Finland altogether, I have the freedom to belong in differenct organisations, freedom to own guns... And like I said, no DMCA, no PATRIOT act, no "department of homeland security"...

Freedom of selfdefense given by the second amendment and Freedom of speech by the first. I can call you a flat headed slav then you can shoot me for doing so🙂

Seriously I don't know Finnish laws but I know it's not as easy to start a business, speak your mind and recieve a myrid of formal education at any point in life in europe...

there might be some red tape (there always is), but there's nothing really stopping you from starting your own business. My mother had a business of her own, and I know what it's like. If you want to start a business, you can do so.

speak your mind

We have that. What you can't do is to spread lies about someone. If you do that, the other party can sue you for it. Finnish laws are pretty strict when it comes to preserving ones image and honor. I guess it's because of the finnish mentality.

and recieve a myrid of formal education at any point in life in europe...

I'm not sure I follow you with this one...

I think this is total BS except for the starting a business part which has to do with the regulations especially environmentally as well as with the high population density.

well, if you would shoot someone for insulting you in the US, you would be arrested... If someone threatens my life, i have the right to kill him in self defence here in sweden...

It IS as easy to start a business here in Sweden, all i have to do is register the firm, that is it... I don't know where in europe you cannot speak your mind, but maybe you could educate me regarding that, and what education can't i get in Sweden at any pont of my life?

That depends on what country you live in... lumping europe together is really like lumping all of america together, north and south...

Well it's seems they are about the same. 🙂 The DMCA is all about protecting the freedom of copyright holders to make money and not have thier stuff stolen. Freedom of enterprise.

And I meant about the education...My parents are from sweden and in the 60's my mother had missed her opportunity to get into the university because she failed to get into the tract which allows one to get a PhD so she came here and easily enrolled at and "old" age of 28 as a freshmen in college and eventually finished a PhD at 38 and began teaching. Not sure how it is now but back then you could'nt do this. once you missed the educational boat for some fields you missed it and wee relegated to the trades.

I thought hose countries had anti-nazi legislation where you can be jailed for hail hilter stuff. you can't here.

Anyway Peace. The three scand countries are the best to use as examples when making an argument for socail reforms over here. Keep the programs🙂

Things have changed since the 60's my friend...

You are correct that we have an anti-nazi legislation, but you will not be jailed for saying heil hitler... (if i hear it you will get your butt kicked, but that's another story.. 🙂

The theory of DMCA is good, but implications are bad. DMCA makes it illegal to watch perfectly legal DVD's on Linux for example. And it can be used to
abuse competitors

I don't know about this... to my knowledge you can study at any time in your life. In my polytechnic there are alot of people who are over 40 years old.

I thought hose countries had anti-nazi legislation where you can be jailed for hail hilter stuff. you can't here.

To my knowledge Germany has something like that, but I don't know any details. We don't have that kind of legislation here.

It was just an example snapit that infammitory speech is allowed for by the constitution not an advocation of such. It's nice to know some eorupean countries have the same protections and freedoms we have here.

I must say anyone who answers this thread SHOULD have experienced lifestyles of other countries before saying the U.S. is the "best". With that said, all I'm going to say is that I'm grateful to be living in the U.S., though there may be better out there. I'm content.

Snapit- You've lived in both for extended periods. I am interested why you chose Sweden? Not just the "freedom" stuff either. My choice was thailand a few dozen posts back for the reasons stated.

-Edit and my parents have said in the past things like sunny california, education opportunity, escaping the depressed economy back then, escaping my facist grandfather.

Yes you can, just not on public land I'd say - cause if that was possible on public land u'd shoot more ppl than deer and all you would find that looks deerlike would be plasticdeers since there wouldnt be enough (we are 83mill on 3 Kentuckies)

Yes we do, dunno if u can get jailed though. And yes our freedom of speech is limited in the sense that your speech has to be on the grounds of our constitution. So forming an entity whos goal it is to overthrow the our free market/democracy, u will meet the law eventually. Like some Nazi organisations that are prohibited. We also have laws in place that prohibit the display of Nazi icons and such (Heil Hitler, Nazi flag blabla [does not apply to arts and science]) while I do think this is a limitation in freedom of speech I do not think it is bad. And I also dont know if those laws were made by ourselfs or required by the victors. Oh and u will definately get in trouble (while I dont know the extent) if u publicly deny the holocaust or so.

U see my knowledge about the laws in this aspect is not to high, that is because I do not march around in green bomber jackets, shaved head, white boot laces waving a Reichskriegsflagge. Im rather grateful to have laws which provide means against those misguided arseholes.
