They're my favorite metal band, but I wouldn't even think of calling them the greatest.

Metallica: One awesome album (RTL), two great albums (KEA/MOP), two bad albums (AJFA/TBA), and three horrible albums (L/RL/STA).

Iron Maiden: Three awesome albums (K/NOTB/POM), four great albums (PS/SIT/NPFTD/FOTD), two mediocre albums (IM/TXF/BNW), one bad album (SSOASS), and two horrible albums (VXI/DOD).

Iron Maiden wins.

Iron maiden is for chumps :p

Metallica has many songs that without a doubt pwn anything they've done.

I'll admit that The Call of Ktulu is the best metal song ever. However, most of their other songs are pwned by Maiden classics. Hallowed Be Thy Name, Where Eagles Dare, Powerslave, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Alexander the Great, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and Mother Russia are all purely awesome.

There is no such thing as a great or good metal band. They are all trash.

he's not far from the truth. quality songwriting is VERY rare in the metal genre. the problem is to play it you have be such a skilled "player" that there's no time for the players to learn to be good "musicians." they are all these rejects who spent their teenage years locked in the bedroom running through their scales and practicing their speed picking, instead of writing music like they should have been. and because there are basically no good metal bands, new players have no one worth a sh!t to look up to. and so the cycle continues.

it's too bad, because heavy metal is awesome on paper. heavy guitars, crushing drums, thundering bass. sturm and drag! but the bands all suck. they generally make me feel embarrased for the people in them because they are so bad and so ridiculous... they're like the ultimate D&D nerds, taking themselves WAY too seriously, singing sophmoric crap about blood or whatever dark material their lack of college educations allows them to come up with. then the lead guitarist fills some time up by playing his finger-stretching warm-ups like we're supposed to be amazed. yay! another metal song!

metallica at least has moments of quality, but it's generally when james shuts the hell up and they just play. he really is a great guitarist. kirk can play, but unfortunately, he doesn't play anything you'd ever want to listen to (see finger-stretching warm-ups). too bad, when you figure he was taught by one of the world's greatest guitarists. take a song like master of puppets. there are some great riffs in that song, some heavy parts, some melodic parts, etc. but the main verses and chorus are so fvcking lame.

the one metal band i like is as i lay dying, because they can write consistently good music. but even their lyrics are pretty stupid, and i just tune out the vocals so i can listen to the guitar and drum work.

The haters (and those who don't listen to them but hear that it's cool to bash metallica) will ruin the poll at any rate ;)

At the end of the day it's a matter of personal opinion entirely tho, and therin lies the problem with this thread. I happen to enjoy at lot of what metallica play, and i'm no Iron Maiden fan. Some of you are the other way round it seems, and you're welcome to it ;)

I am not bashing you bro! I listen Metallica too just trying to make you see the light :) Score some Judas Priest also. They have 2 of the most talented guitarist in the heavy metal industry. I think you should also checkout the new Maiden DVD Dance of Death it is awesome too :)

ugh, if you wanna start talking in terms of technical skill, Metallica, Maiden, and Priest all shouldn't even get a mention. but what's the point in that?

...Maiden and Priest suck ;)

Metallica isn't even metal, really. Especially anymore.

They used to be a great band, yes - thats about all.

After Lars and co. started their Napster hatred and acting like the 18th house they could have bought was really so important - I lost any respect I may have had for them

They were thrash metal through AJFA, but now they're probably considered regular RnR

MoP alone makes Metallica the greatest metal band of all time. MoP is a work of art that will never be topped, it's an unbelievable album.

All you people citing personal reasons(napster, etc) for not liking them are full of sh!t.

It doesen't change the fact that they wrote excellent music and defined a genere.

I definitely appreciate their music, but I can't say I enjoy it. They're great, but not the greatest.
