There is no such thing as a great or good metal band. They are all trash.

he's not far from the truth. quality songwriting is VERY rare in the metal genre. the problem is to play it you have be such a skilled "player" that there's no time for the players to learn to be good "musicians." they are all these rejects who spent their teenage years locked in the bedroom running through their scales and practicing their speed picking, instead of writing music like they should have been. and because there are basically no good metal bands, new players have no one worth a sh!t to look up to. and so the cycle continues.

it's too bad, because heavy metal is awesome on paper. heavy guitars, crushing drums, thundering bass. sturm and drag! but the bands all suck. they generally make me feel embarrased for the people in them because they are so bad and so ridiculous... they're like the ultimate D&D nerds, taking themselves WAY too seriously, singing sophmoric crap about blood or whatever dark material their lack of college educations allows them to come up with. then the lead guitarist fills some time up by playing his finger-stretching warm-ups like we're supposed to be amazed. yay! another metal song!

metallica at least has moments of quality, but it's generally when james shuts the hell up and they just play. he really is a great guitarist. kirk can play, but unfortunately, he doesn't play anything you'd ever want to listen to (see finger-stretching warm-ups). too bad, when you figure he was taught by one of the world's greatest guitarists. take a song like master of puppets. there are some great riffs in that song, some heavy parts, some melodic parts, etc. but the main verses and chorus are so fvcking lame.

the one metal band i like is as i lay dying, because they can write consistently good music. but even their lyrics are pretty stupid, and i just tune out the vocals so i can listen to the guitar and drum work.
What about Dream Theater?

Throw Opeth and In Flames in that list too.

Actually, you should try listening to some European metal bands. You'd be suprised how much talent they have.

No it isn't. Battery, Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, and Orion are the only awesome songs on the album with the rest being either boring (TTTSNB) or generic thrash. Iron Maiden has released at least seven albums that are much better than it.

Not really. St Anger is much closer to emo than rock and roll.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I bet that if the majority of people had to choose an album that defined the metal era, it would most definitely be Master of Puppets. IMO, there isn't a single song on the CD that isn't flat out awesome.

Overrated....and I wouldn't call them metal after the black album. Maybe Pop-metal or soft rock...

If Metallica is overrated, why do they sell out every single concert, their albums ALWAYS debut at #1, and they have one of the best selling records of all time (Black Album). Metallica is the best folks.

I would say only Kill "em All was thrash, the rest power metal (Black/Load/Reload had a more radio-friendly sound though) , except St. Anger, which was very Nu-Metal.

What did it define? There's nothing in MoP aside from the awesome bass part in Orion that sounded original to me.

Not only did MoP put Metallica on the map, it put the metal-genre in general on the map as well.

Good marketing, broad appeal, lots of radio play and lots of selling out. But one only has to look at the popularity of American Idol and Rap to realize that popular != good.

Not really. Number of the Beast, for example, sold millions four years before Metallica even made their first album. Metal was defenitely still known before it.

Number of the Beast? They were hardly well known, and certainly did not put metal on the map.

Maybe my IM fanboyism has tainted my memory, but I thought that it was a #1 seller and was pretty popular at the time. Maybe that was only in the UK though...

EDIT: I really doubt that metal was put on the map in 86 though, considering it started a decline probably around 88.

Metallica in its heyday was one of the greatest bands on the planet. They were absolutely huge. My middle school was full of kids with "Metal Up Your Ass" t-shirts. I do know metal, and I would say that they were one of the greatest metal bands of all time, if not the greatest.

Uh no. Bands like Sodom, Destruction and Kreator should be credited for starting the thrash metal era.

How many of those album sales are because people bought the Black album and then decided to try the older ones? What exactly were the sales on MoP before 1991?
