Sure the Blackberry devices aren't as "hip" or don't come with all the bells and whistles that other devices come with. But why is it that such a large percentage of business users use Blackberry exclusively? In North America at least, if you work for an employer that gives out phones to their employees, it's almost always a RIM device. There's a reason behind it ... it's damn good at what's it intended to do and what it's marketed for.
It's very easy to explain, and it fits into two words: Microsoft Exchange. The majority of corporate uses it, and RIM made it a priority from day 0 to seamlessly integrate email with Exchange. Their software passes most anal certifications, and it does e-mail push extremely well (barring RIM's server farms going down, which seems to happen every now and then).
I used to work for a competitor of RIM about 5 years ago, and we had our own Exchange add-on which could be installed onto corporate servers. We, in fact, did a much better job than Blackberry in pushing e-mail, but we lost in the end, because we did not manufacture devices ourselves, bur rather used Palm Treo.
Apple's phones, on the other hand, are consumer-oriented. Guess who wins in the end? Consumer stuff always wins.
