is it me or does religion suck?

Helpless: he is talking about the real religious people....priests or other denominations equivalents, who dedicate their lives to their beliefs. These people are to be respected whether you hold the same belief as them or not. They are role models for civility and do not look down on people that have different beliefs than them.
 
there is nothing wrong with religion. It's the zealots who do things in the"name" of religion who have problems.
 
I think alot of christianity is complete bullpucky and I don't think much of The Poop, oops, I mean the Pope.
 
Not even the existance of gods has a purpose if they exist. An afterlife has no meaning or purpose. Religion only works for you as long as you don't try to think beyond what is clearly visible.

Religion doesn't necessarily 'suck', organized religion is, however, the greatest 'evil' this world has ever seen. I'll take communism over it anytime.

Recent evidence would suggest that politicized communism is far more abusive in today's world than politicized religion.

Besides, you contradict yourself. You consistently argue that there is no such thing as good and evil and then name "organized" religion the greatest evil the world has ever seen.

Elledan, you are obviously a fairly bright person who has been spoon fed a bunch of ideas that you haven't quite worked into a more unified and consistent whole.

If you are going to throw out the baby of pure religion with the bathwater of abusive zealots, then you had better renounce communism because that bathwater is far filthier and bloodier than anything religion has to offer.

Other than that, its best to ignore trolls like mlip and yasha, and rather let them fade away when they inevitably get bored.

Point taken, but notice that I was only referring to 'organized religion' and not religion as a whole.
Organized religion is responsible for even more deaths than communism. Of course, organized religions exist a bit longer than communism, but in that case, you would think that people would have learned anything during that time?!

Not negativaly. I'm only posting my observations.

Believe me, I won't just discard anything which has to do with religion just because it has anything to do with religion. Doing so is simply foolish. I'm not a fool and I intend to keep it that way.

Besides, a little sceptism never killed anyone 🙂
 
This a very interesting thread. I am not religious, however I do not proclaim myself an atheist. I don't go to church but follow my heart and keep a clear conscience. my two cents...
 
Elledan - Oh trust me, I think skepticism is a good thing. Its just that you seem to walk a line between discussing theory and thought intelligently, vs. the occasional tempermental comment against the other side.

I saw a bumper sticker today that said: &quot;Freedom of religion means ALL religion.&quot; They didn't mention us nonbelievers at all. Not fair! She also had &quot;Pagan and Proud&quot; on her car.

This is why I don't agree with laws that force any one faith on others, so that you and any other atheist doesn't have to hear/see it if you choose not to.

i.e. I think a school could have a &quot;Silent Minute&quot; before class where the kids could, on thier own, either think, meditate, or pray (silently).
Or have a voucher system where people could send thier kids to public, Catholic, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc schools as they saw fit...
 
Mikal: In a way, yes. I don't want the state to interfere with the church or any faith - i.e. everyone should be able to worship/believe freely - but I'm not comfortable with laws that force any one faith on others.

i.e.:

1) A law requiring a religious symbol in a courthouse? No.
2) Should a store owner be allowed to have a religious symbol in his store? Yes.
3) Should a town's city hall have a nativity scene, paid for by taxpayers, on the lawn? I think thats up to the people of the town to decide, but if they have one, then on request they should also have other sybols that at least a few people request. Better would be that they would display any symbol (within reason) donated privately perhaps...

etc.
 
Those are good points but I'm more concerned about living in Dubya's WASP wonderland. That was an interesting Supreme Court decision allowing fundamentalist groups to recruit young kids right after school. Almost like an extension of the school day. They use scare tactics like dividing the kids into two groups: the Saved and the Unsaved. I'd like to see humanist groups in each and every school these people are doing this to serve as a counterpoint. Either that, or everyone stays out.
 
i am not a a religious person, but i consider myself an ethical one. most religions have a common message of stewardship and compassion, which i believe should be the central focus. but unfortunately, many faiths conceal that importance with ceremonies, decorations, etc. which turns many people off. but understanding that importance through religion is the purpose of &quot;believing&quot;. atheism may be a nice alternative to NOT caring and just going about your ways, but look at how many people DONT care. dont you think that the world woudl be slightly better for you and the following generations if people cared more in this world? once this world is crappy again....without the technology and fun, will we believe in that one or multiple entities to help us out of the tough times.

but to answer your question, yes, religions do suck in how they carry out their messages. :disgust:

I can't bring myself to really like the Republicans or Democrats because I think they both have it wrong. I think, unfortunately, that politics has become a poularity contest to &quot;win&quot; being powerful.
 
Optimus: I'll have to find out more. I do believe they make announcements like regular clubs and of course kids who are already believers talk others into coming along. (By the way, we've come along way from the old knockdown, dragout fights, eh?) 🙂

As for politics, I'm not affiliated with any party. They both sound too much alike nowadays....
