Mikal:

If its volunatary then I'm OK with it, as long as any other groups (within reason) can do the same and get the same announcments, etc... also as long as its not costing tax money (other than maybe lights for the rooms).
In other words, if a fundamentalist Christian group wants to use an empty classroom for meetings, then fine. If a muslim group want to do the same, fine too. If the Beekeeping Mathematics Club want an empty classroom... etc.

So we dont' give special treatment for religios groups, but nor do we discriminate against them. They get the same treatment as any other group.

And yeah - we've come a long way, baby! :D

Just because you don't believe in something, doesnt mean it automatically doesn't exist

<< Hi! I'm 15 and very angry! >>

That's an ignorant statement. Just because you're not Christian doesn't mean you're a stereotypical angry teen.

Really? How about one which teaches it's morally OK for me to kick your head in? Is that one just as good as one which teaches that your life is as precious as any other, and should be respected? I guess they're all the same!

I once saw a bumper sticker that said something like "If you believe ther is no hell, you better be sure you are right."

The point in that is this: What does it matter if you devote 1 hour a week to God. Every think the church (roman catholic) teaches is basicly right. Be nice ot others, obey your parents, dont kill. And if you are right and there is no God, nothing happens. But if you are wrong, you will go to hell. I know posting this will change none of your opinions, but i just wanted to give my opinion. Try church, you may be suprised at what you find.

<< vacuums suck >>

actualy, vacuums don't really suck. i think you are refering to a region of higher pressure atmosphere pushing on the border of a region of lower pressure atmosphere.

<< Just because you don't believe in something, doesnt mean it automatically doesn't exist >>

how would you know?

<< And if you are right and there is no God, nothing happens. But if you are wrong, you will go to hell >>

but say the muslims are right, then we are both screwed. just because you go to church, doesn't mean your bases are covered.

<< Try church, you may be suprised at what you find. >>

i did. i was. i won't be back.

It baffles me why any thread with the word God or religion would always attract the most number of posts in OT. Why are people still arguing? We have the right the believe in anything we want. Why do people care so much about what other people believe in? :frown:

This may be somewhat off-topic but... Kids rebelling in the religion area makes me laff. In my personal experience, people I know who say religion (especially Christianity and related religions) is crap do it just to rebel and think they're cool. I like it when people say something like Christianity is crap, but think Wicca, where it's perfectly fine and normal to marry a dog or a tree (from everything I've heard and read this is true), is fine. There's no reasoning behind something like that as far as I can see, other than "my parents don't like it, so it's neato."

Okay, I'm just blabbing on and on like an idiot so I'll stop now.

<< i mean atheism is the only way to go, I dont have to worry about going to hell or to church on sunday, and its the only one that makes any sense. am i right or what >>

The laziness I see every day astounds me. Even here on the boards, today's idiots are too lazy to construct a well thought out troll post. Just sad.

Religion has its' uses.

Just a thought: Can there be more than one reality? I mean, will your after-life(assuming there is one) be how you believe it will be? Or, more likely, is there only a particular outcome or limited number of outcomes after death.

Religion = sh*t made up by man to influence man

Plain and simple. Use common sense, and not your insecurity people.

Why do people insist on believing in the 'afterlife'??? Do you think animals have afterlives? Plants? Dust? Rocks? What makes people so special that we get an afterlife? When, for example, an animal dies, it dies. Its brain stops activity, and its body stops, and all that, and then it's just a mass of flesh. When a computer is turned off or unplugged, it does the same, except it as a pile of silicon, plastic, metal, etc. I think that humans have a hard time perceiving the concept of infinity. I also think they have a hard time conceiving death. You may argue against that comment, but listen: You may accept that you will die, you may also accept that you will never come back to life. But, most dont accept the fact that they will cease to exist. Of course, I have never died, and therefore do not know what it is like, but using logic I would conclude that it is the end of your existence. You may accept you will die, but in believing that there is an afterlife, you refuse to accept that you may cease to exist.

What was it like before you were born? Do you remember? Probably not, and I would assume because you did not exist. Well, in my opinion, that will happen again. I might add, I am also human, and the thought is a bit chilling.

On religion in general--

It seems that people are merely brainwashed into their religion, in most cases, that is. If you are tought all of your childhood that something is so, and most of society supports it, you will most likely continue that belief. I, for one, believe that religion is no big conspiracy (although it can seem like it at times). It seems to be that religion is a human instinct. There have been many, many societies, that have developed in isolation from each other, and yet they all believe in some sort of higher power, and the sole purpose is to explain things in which they cannot explain.

In that respect, I have coinned myself "comfortable in my ignorance".

What i do not know or cannot explain, I either try to research, or simply remain uninformed. But I do not resort to explaining it away with religion.

I encourage you all to read the research paper i did on religion. It is quite short for a research paper, I did it in approximately 3 hours, the day before it was due, so it is not a stellar piece of work, however it contains some very compelling arguments why religion is basically a bunch of BS.

Linky

as NFS4 states in his sig: Of course, thats just my opinion, I could be wrong.

EDIT: You should cut and paste that research paper into notepad, and turn Word Wrap on. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Hmmm..I think religions are alright as long as they're not so arrogant enough to discredit other religions and push people into believing things their way. I am not religious nor do I plan on taking one up in the near future because I don't like living by rules set by others. I think being open-minded is the way to go. :)

Over the years my job has allowed me to see all the nasty things people do to each other, I have also witnessed many die in front of me. I truely believe that if there is a God, then he's taking a long vacation... As for dying, it's pretty uneventful, people are there one second and then there gone. It's very very hard to find God while holding a one year old boy with his head squashed by a car. I hope he will take that into consideration if I ever stand before him.
