Is it illegal to grow marijuana for personal use? If so, why?

When I say illegal I mean in terms of the constitution. It kind of boggles my mind that growing a plant could be illegal. It's like outlawing people from being able to grow basil or thyme. What logical reason would marijuana be illegal in any form or fashion? Health reasons?

It's a Schedule I Controlled Substances within the US Controlled Substances Act, and by US law you're not allowed to be in possession of it. That's all you need to know. Because it's the law! The DEA will visit you very soon.

It's obvious what the back and forth will be at this point. Please stop.

As kids, we are our parents children. As adults, we are the government's children.
The whole time, we do shit we like in hiding. That about sums it up me thinks.

Because we hate freedom. It will eventually be illegal grow anything without paying licensing fees to Monsanto. If you make it to 2030 though, after the global economy collapses there wont be enough funding for police departments to prevent freedom (or crime) anymore.

Why is it a controlled substance? When you seek to control something on the level that marijuana is, there would have to be some underlying reason, why? Is it deadly? Does it cause some kind of side effect that is detrimental to the user? Is it harmful to the environment? Why would a government consider a plant that is part of the natural ecosystem of the earth to be a controlled substance?

Where the fuck have you been for the last 40 years? Go research the War on Drugs.

edit:
Interestingly, MJ has had a checkered past with regulation going back to the mid-1800s. see here

Thread is TLDR. WHY? Simple Answer: Because Uncle Sam collects no taxes on what you could potentially be selling.

I remember something a while back about in alaska you could grow a small amount for personal use but I don't know if that is still true.

I think it's mainly because pot and organized religion don't go well together. Also, pot smokers aren't the best at remembering to vote. They will be telling people they need to vote yes on pot legalization until someone tells them the vote was last month and they lost. Then they will be bummed out for 2 minutes until they smoke a joint and watch some cartoon network.

Because when you smoke it, you can exhibit uncontrollable behavior, putting the general public at risk.
The same reason heroine, cocaine, meth, huffing paint, any prescription drug, etc. are illegal.

I agree with marijuana legalization. I am just voicing the opinion of government and a large percentage of the public.

Doesn't alcohol do the same thing? Maybe the gubmint is ok with alcohol and tobacco because they are getting tax money from it to enforce its laws.

And JUST MAYBE people fill find pain relief and other medical benefits from it for very little cost, and the big pharma lobbyists night have a problem with that.

I'm ok with legalization: grow your own for private use in your house, never sell it, never be in public while high, employers can still fire you for use, never give it to minors, never have more than X ounces in your possession (prevents intent to sell). Homebrewing is legal, so why not this?

Because you are cutting into big pharma profit, thus illegal.

Because alcohol is legal and marijuana is not.

There is no point in asking the question.
At this point, alcohol and tobacco are legal... marijuana is not.

This country is already moving towards legalization. Once the current generation of 70yo+ people die off and can't vote anymore, it will become legalized.

Just hold your pot smokin horses and it will happen eventually.
