Is 18% gratuity the new 15%?

Waitresses are such drama queens. I tip -10% just to show em who is the boss around here. If the bill says $20, I put $18 on the table and walk out.

Sigh...tipping has never been totally optional on any service oriented job.

I doubt most follow their own 0% rules above anyway being to fearful the waiter will somehow kick their ass in the parking lot.

There is a lot of good 'tips' in that link.

In reality, many shouldn't be eating out...

Tip jars for places like a sub shop or the like where they are just handing your food to you it is a total optional deal.

I generally tip well, but this last restaurant had a cow of a waitress who could definitely stand to loose a few pounds. She got ZERO tip.

when was the 'base rate' upped to 15% -_-

I tip 10% base, rounded up to the nearest dollar. -5% adjustment for exceptionally bad service; +5% adjustment for exceptionally great service.

The first and only time I ever tipped higher than 10% base was when I was a teen, and got my very first job and took my parents out to dinner. I was in a happy mood that night and tipped 20% base. My dad proceeded to give me a shitstorm for the next 2 weeks on how the price did not match the service, and how I needed to learn the value of money.

why should the looks of the waitress matter? unless its hooters i don't get it.

And that is why you are cheap bastard...

When I go to a place that has the "mandatory 18% gratuity for large parties", I always ask for separate checks and leave no tip.

what a great fucking idea.

25% mandatory tip rate = I won't go out to eat at your restaurants.

fuck that. It's insane.

also that shows that to many have lost track of what a tip is. Its not a fee as many are trying to make it. Its something to give for good and great service. you make it mandatory and you get the issue many find and that is shitty service or waitress's that don't give a shit.

I paid for breakfast this morning for 3, bill was $17.87, all I had was a $20 on me, they got a $2 tip, I didn't insult them with the 13 cents. :colbert:

Agreed. This is exactly why tipping exists. Waiters get paid $4.xx an hour because they know they will earn tips. If tips did not exist fine dining steakhouses would have to pay their servers $40+ an hour in order to keep service at the level it is now, and food/drink prices would skyrocket. Lesser for lesser restaurants but I sure as hell wouldn't bartend for $15-20 an hour. But to make it mandatory is silly.
