Is 18% gratuity the new 15%?

Tip jars for places like a sub shop or the like where they are just handing your food to you it is a total optional deal.

The first and only time I ever tipped higher than 10% base was when I was a teen, and got my very first job and took my parents out to dinner. I was in a happy mood that night and tipped 20% base. My dad proceeded to give me a shitstorm for the next 2 weeks on how the price did not match the service, and how I needed to learn the value of money.

Agreed. This is exactly why tipping exists. Waiters get paid $4.xx an hour because they know they will earn tips. If tips did not exist fine dining steakhouses would have to pay their servers $40+ an hour in order to keep service at the level it is now, and food/drink prices would skyrocket. Lesser for lesser restaurants but I sure as hell wouldn't bartend for $15-20 an hour. But to make it mandatory is silly.
