3GS only.

I'm guessing the same for the touch-focus camera?

Yea.. that's a hardware upgrade.

BUT! AT&T is allowing early upgrades for customers who would've been eligible in July/Aug/Sept. :D

I might upgrade now. Yes!

11/08/2010 for me :p

I think AT&T should offer the $199 upgrade to those of us who got such crappy service on our 1st-gens that we were forced to upgrade to a 3G a couple months before the 3GS came out. Cough, cough ;)

I completed the update and now my phone just displays the connect to iTunes graphic. When I plug it back in to the PC it errors out and says that it can't connect to the iTunes store. I've rebooted my phone a couple times and nothing. All I can do is make emergency calls. This sucks.

I believe that's because the Store is getting hammered. Give it a bit and I'm sure it'll be back up. Although, it does suck that it didn't even activate your phone.

Yep, it finally came up. Well, it never connected to the store, but it did say "iPhone activated". I just kept plugging it in over and over till it activated.

Yick. Yea, my date is 8/21/09, so I think I'm just going to go ahead and get it. I should easily be able to off load my 3G for $200.

At least the Voice Control wasn't a hardware upgrade. Sort of a bitch move by Apple.

I agree. John Gruber claims that it's special DSP chip that was added to the 3GS, but I think this could've been an addition to the 3G.

I think you all should realize by now that Apple releases updates like these 1 by 1. A lot of them are clear cut software ones like copy paste, but with the new OSes comes a new iPhone. It's almost like releasing new features one by one to accompany a new hardware platform so we all go out and spend more money. It's a terrible trick, but most of us fall for it.

This makes me wonder, why isn't video recording possible in the 2G/3G? It's just a simple chip they decided to leave out or is it a software limitation?

Tsk tsk tsk. It's out there already if you're wondering though =)
Hey, I already paid for my device once. Did an Apple engineer come to my house, pop open my iPod and slap in a Bluetooth? If that were the case, I'd pay for services rendered.

Anyway, the only one I've found is a "gold master" but not official release. I'm sure I'll find it soon enough--not really looking now.

They'll say its a chip thing, but the JB'd iphone has a video camera app I believe.

Is the 400 MHz ARM processor good enough to do speech recognition in real time?

Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade but I might as well. :( Will ATT unlock our iPhone upon request like T-Mobile does for its post-paid customers?

I'm usually not a first-adopter for OS upgrades but I truly hate how Safari restarts (crashes?) almost every time I use another app. Besides having to refresh the current page(s), sessions are lost so I have to login to Gmail again!

I'm pretty sure I've seen some Safari crash logs in the iPhone backup set; but I just hope the new OS fixes this glaring annoyance. Since mine is a refurbished iPhone 3G, this isn't a hardware defect, is it?

Check out footnote #2

It's time to sell, or jailbreak! My co worker got $200 for his 1st gen off Craigslist. He left work early today to go get his money. Perhaps you can too.

I want to check this against a bunch of knowledgeable guys before considering going ahead with the iPod Touch 2G OS 3.0 upgrade, as it sounds too easy to be true and there surely has to be a problem somewhere if it isn't.

Is it true that I can avoid the US$10 (probably GB£6 where I live) charge for OS3.0 on my 2nd gen iPod Touch if I follow these steps...

1) update iTunes to v8.2 (I've downloaded v8.2.0.23 and have it waiting to be installed to update my 8.1.x.x version currently in use)
2) download the official iPod Touch 2G v3.0 .ipsw file "iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw" from Apple (roughly 257MB in size)
3) using iTunes, hold down the 'Shift' key while hitting the 'Restore' option for my iPod Touch and choosing to restore to this new firmware file

I do understand that without modifying that .ipsw file (which is just a compressed archive that can be opened in WinRAR and similar to replace files within it with the cracked versions for jailbreaking) that I won't have a jailbroken iPod Touch 2G running OS3.0, but that I will have a fully recognised and legal version of the OS3.0 update installed. Am I missing something here, or is the US$10 charge to upgrade to OS 3.0 therefore optional to iPod Touch users who know the steps needed to do it manually?

Well, I am having trouble downloading from iTune. I guess I just have to wait.

Is there a way to unlock OS 3.0 already? (I'm on Tmobile) I thought iphone dev team won't release the tool until friday.
