iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade thread

I'll be upgrading my 16 GB 1st gen iPod touch when I can tomorrow. This thread is for results/experiences/impressions of the 3.0 install and the OS itself.

Smoothly I hope. Got a text from Rogers/FIDO today saying that tethering will be allowed just as long as you have a 1gb plan or better. No additional fees for that. Good news for Canadian iPhone owners.

What feature(s) in 3.0 make it worth $10 for your touch?

I have heard that the browser is faster in 3.0.

Plus of course, cut-copy-paste finally.

I'm debating whether I should spring for the upgrade on my touch. It seems like support for bluetooth headphones is the only major feature upgrade I'd like, but since I don't have a bluetooth headset it somewhat renders the feature moot. Would love to see if it does anything for Skype though. Would be awesome to be able to use a bluetooth headset with Skype on my 2nd gen touch.

Well, I'm mostly excited for push notifications. I want to get skype going on my touch and have a blog set up for Canadians (who get raped on cell rates) for mobile wifi based phones. Currently Canadians can't get skype for iPod/iPhone without setting up a foreign iTunes account, and there is no good cheap way to get mobile wifi phones. Having push notifications means that we can receive skype calls without having to have skype running.

I have a 1st gen touch but will be upgrading at the end of the summer to a 2.0 gen or maybe a 3.0 when they come out mainly for the mic support. I know wifi isn't always on, so push won't always work, but it's an incremental step that I can report on.

I got the GM Seed last week, and I'm loving it. Copy & Paste is great, Spotlight is a bit sluggish, but works well, Safari hasn't crashed on me yet.. where as before it would crash every other web page it felt like. Have been waiting for today so I could try out push notifications. 😀

I did too, but am having all kinds of 3G network issues with it. Edge and Wifi work fine, but as soon as I enable 3G the data network stops working

I did it also on my 8GB with none of those issues.

I haven't applied it to my 16GB though, which seems to not have as good as reception as the GM 3.0 one.

I just had the phone replaced the week before, so it's possible it's an issue with the replacement phone, but i won't know til I apply the 3.0 again today... if it's still acting up then at least i can go to the Genius bar and have it taken care of.

A couple apps have push enabled already, tap tap revolution and textfree from what I've tried.

Push is remarkably quick, but the alert window is pretty annoying. I disabled the window immediately, but left the badges and the sound alert. I could see sound alerts becoming obnoxious as well, as the dev can push a "custom" one.

Those are the only 2 apps (that i've used) in the past couple days updated to include push. Twitterfon (free) hasn't been, and neither has AIM. I don't use Beejive.

Cool.. thanks. I'll check out TextFree. That's my main reason for wanting push, so I can hopefully finally get rid of my texting plan.

I used TextFree for all of 10 minutes and decided I didn't like it. The texts it sends (received by other people) are kind of crappy looking. Also you can't receive texts yet, just initiate the conversation from textfree and get the responses in the app. There isn't a "textfree number" or anything.

I have the 200 txt message plan for $5 so I plan on keeping that anyway, but push IM will be outstanding. I may even purchase a Beejive type app which aggregates many accounts.

Thanks for the mini-review. I like BeeJive, but it is really sluggish for me. I'm going to give the new 3.0 version a try when it comes out. I was hoping Meebo would be available at the 3.0 launch, but I haven't heard any more from it since the 3.0 Conference back in March.

A Blackberry Messenger/iChat app would be outstanding. I was in a meeting with a coworker earlier and we were texting back and forth but it'd be nice to have a non-text way to do the same thing.
