Where have you been? There are some PREviews of Conroe which wipe AMD 20% across the board in terms of performance.

I saw the AT previews, but I'm still waiting for an actual user to test on his/her own system vs. an Intel-provided system.

Saturday afternoon/evening you'll have just that. Fugger will have results by then over at XS.

I know it's an engineering sample, but Fugger hints that it will be able to clock to 4 GHz. On Air. This means that... 3 GHz-3.5 GHz shouldn't be out of the question for the 2.13 GHz Conroe. Unbelievable. Although I just built my computer last August, I have a feeling I might be in for a total system rebuild this coming summer.

I can see it now... Conroe 2.13 GHz @ 3.33 GHz, R600 or G80, 4 GB DDR2, Vista, aaahhh!

At least I can use my current powersupply and case (I love my V1100B).

Edit: With a price of the 2.13GHz part being
E6400 (2.13GHz), $240

I can definitely see myself upgrading this summer/fall.

Those clock speeds on air are what I was expect them to oc to. Its 65 nm processes people were able to oc 90nm Dothan to 2.5 on air and it's pipe line is 12 not 14 like Conroe . This is also not mobile chip like Dothan was the arch was tweaked to allow for the clock speeds. The main reason why Intel is releasing them at such low intro clock speed from what I gather is that they want to try to under cut amd dual core prices. (smart move)I can see 2007 them ramping up the clock speeds and moving quad core as planed. Only thing I can see that could be problem is the 1333FSB may not be enough band width for a quad core chip. Intel originally planed high end Woodcrest to have 1666 FSB so that might be in the works for 2007 as well.

Just a slight correction to the previous post-the Pentium M's core is DOTHAN, not DOLPHIN

Did you really need to post that? Does the fact that I spelled the chips code name wrong way really affect you?

First off FUGGER never said it would go to 4G on air, the guy who gave it to the guy whos giving it to him is daid by the middle guy in the chain to have said it :p So basically its been said by someone who nobody knows except FCG, and who probably aint very trustworthy seeing as they leaked a scret chip out to the public :p So, at least personally, I consider that a complete fairy tale. I haven't seen Yonah go much over 3G on 65nm, and Presler only goes 4G, but its pipeline in 31 stages instead of 14. So i'll be amazed if this chip gets more than 3.2G, epsecially considering that its an old ES chip, and Conroe only launches at 2.66.

Also, for those people wanting independant confirmation of Intel scores, FUGGER posted several Merom benchies, so those are free of Intel interference, and still show about 20% IPC increase over Yonah in many apps.

EDIT: also, the quad core server chips have DIB at 1333, so thats 2666 effective bandwidth to the chip. Hopefully thats enough :p Don't really know if it is though seeing as they also have 4 channels of FB-DIMMS...

sorry but im confused on which processor i should get... the prereviews are pretty unclear and unreliable... should i just get the AMD fx60 now, or the conroe, or amd am2?... i dont know what the details are for the last two so im not sure what step to take right now...

Rumor is that Conroe won't be available for another 4-5 months. If I were you I'd pick up an inexpensive Opteron 165/170, oc the stink out of it, and wait for Conroe and AM2 chips to come out to get a better idea of what they will offer. FX-60 isn't worth the money IMO.

you should get whatever chip is he best at what you need in your price range. Right now it aint AM2, or Conroe because they aren't out yet. At some point in the future either of these could be what you want, but right now they arent out, and niether are any good reviews of them.

Totally correct. After all we'd be seeing Conroe in July and then of course you hafta wait a few months until all the kinks get worked out in the motherboards so that's an even longer wait. Instead of waiting you can buy something now and have fun.

Plus, like many people I'm really waiting for quad core processing. Well, in better terns quad core processing without the requirement of ECC memory. Until then an OCed Opty will be just fine.

Pretty soon we will find out whether Conroe is actually just somewhat superior, or would simply be dominating over the X2's. With AMD stuck at 90nm, they seem to be screwed for the rest of the year (there are some reports of 65nm Opterons coming on line earlier).

Conroe works on 975X, but requires a new VRM, so only a few motherboard currently have it so far. Im not sure if maybe some of the older chipsets supports the 800mhz FSB ones, only 975X has been officially confirmed last I heard. In Q3 965 will also be released which is the mainstream chipset for Conroe.

Why not wait for the actual release of Conroe and then purchase an officially supported motherboard?

You guys and your crazy megahertz escalation .... didn't AMD and now recently Intel teach you that mhz isn't as important as enthusiasts/gamers make it out to be ??

Ohh, and how the hell are we supposed to figure out what we are buying. Ohh, its an Intel 805D ... WTF ??? I just bought an Opteron 165 so thats no better as far as what speed the chip actually is. I'm ranting at this point, but I find it as annoying as trying to buy a certain 3.2 Intel chip from a while back when there were four (FOUR !!??!!??) different 3.2 chips available.

Can't wait for the results. Was xtreme systems just hacked? I guess Fugger over there is now only a guest instead of a high posistion he had I assume. Just an observation.
