Wow, looks Skylake-X looks pretty exciting, for those that swing Intel. Should give Ryzen a run for the money. Less cores, but faster + AVX-512 in some of the cores, if rumors hold out.

I'm a little undecided. I sold my i5-6400 (my highest-end CPU I've ever bought) rig to a friend the other day. So now I'm back to my two deskmini PCs with G4600 Pentium w/HT CPUs, and an ATX Z170 box with a G4560 and an RX 470 4GB for gaming purposes, although I wouldn't terribly mind selling that too, if I could get the $700 I want for it.

So the 7800X has 1mb L2 and 1.375mb of L3 per core, whereas CL will have 256K L2 and 1.5 or 2mb of L3 per core.
We've only seen the 6C6T CL leak which had 1.5mb of L3 per core.
Is there even going to be a 6C12T CL chip? Presumably it would have 2mb L3 per core?

Wha....? Seriously Intel, way to gimp the heck out of the 7800X. 28 lanes, no problem, but the massive difference in clocks :(
7820X looks sweet, but will probably be out of my price range - overclocking these suckers should be very satisfying!!

I guess Intel decided since they were going to go with 8 cores instead of 6 the full lanes had to go.

I'm very surprised that Intel reduced the amount of PCIe lanes for their 8 core 16 thread Core i9! WTF are they smoking?!

Not concerned about the lanes, just the clocks on the hexacore 7800X. Hexacore HEDT processors normally have clocks close to that of the top clocked CPU in the series. Not this time.

Yes, odd that Intel gimped their 8C/16T product - I can only guess that they want to price it aggressively against Ryzen 7 1800x. We'll find out more in a couple of weeks.

So they change their branding to i9? That's interesting. Looks like they are doing what they can to make these feel revolutionary and new. They are new and look to be great, but the i9 naming seems unjustified IMO. What is AVX-512 good for?

IIRC, they contemplated naming the HEDT chips i9 several years ago and dropped the idea. Personally, I think in this case, it is a good idea.

Why does the 7640k even exist? The 7740k was bad enough.

You have to consider the whole ecosystem when looking at this. Intel's Client Computing Group is in managed decline mode, so their focus is on minimizing development costs and maximizing margins. The move Intel is trying to make is migrating all "enthusiast" SKUs (i.e. K-series) onto their HEDT platform. I wouldn't be surprised to see K SKUs disappearing from Coffeelake and future client chip generations.

Wonder if they will overheat/degrade, like the 7700s are doing..?

Have the TDP's been announced? I'm guessing the i9's lack iGPU's, but maybe the inclusion of iGPU's is why they call these chips i9.

If I get the bug to get one of these, I'll wait for the competition to come out. Intel won't lower their prices once they've been announced, but Microcenter just might.

Wow 4.3 Ghz Turbo 2.0 on a 10C SKL-X, that's a massive 800 Mhz improvement over Broadwell 10C. Singlethread performance should be even better than i7-7700k.

No more embarrassing situation where the mainstream Core i7 outperforms HEDT. Basin Falls brings together the best of both worlds. Regarding the Turbo clocks compared to Broadwell-E, massive bump. Thank you 14nm+.

Next mission: Coffee Lake-S specifications :D

How so? Not uncommon for a 7700k to overclock to 5ghz, so it will still have the single thread lead, assuming the extra cache of Skylake X doesn't result in a significant ipc gain.

I'm surprised that it has taken Intel so long to utilize the i9 name, but better late than never. :p

Heh, marketing of course. Why, AMD only goes to 7, now we go to 9! ;-) So open those wallets and pour your money into our till....

Yeah but AMD will one up them with X399. Marketang! I have to admit, first thing I thought when I saw the i9 name was, "Dang, I'll still have a rusty old 7 series in my box".

We can't talk about SKL-X OC yet. We talk about Intels specification. OC is a different topic.
