Congrats to the anti-tobacco ad campaigns, you've done it!!!!

Us smokers are a dying breed, so smoke'em if you got'em

I never smoke around anyone else, but I still feel like I'm committing a crime or something. Crazy people. Then again, maybe it's all in my head.

You are not allowed to smoke in any public establishments in my town, and they were apparently working on banning smoking outdoors too.. no idea how they're gonna pull that off.. Soon you'll only be able to smoke in your own home, which many people don't want to do anyways. Sitting on the back step looks to be the only option :p

This is why I love capitalism. Our markets keep our freedoms free.

But there has been such a radical change in public opinion toward smoking in recent years that I doubt the industry will survive.

I understand where you are coming from...but that change has been for the good, because there has been a radical change in recent years about what we know about smoking

back in the 80's people knew they were bad but not something that was gonna kill you or w/e....not to mention they are now $5.00 a pack!

Back in the 80s we damn well did know it was going to kill ya. That has been publicly accepted since the 60s. It has taken this long to overcome the political clout of the drug lords. We still have a long way to go but getting rid of the tobacco quota system was the first stake to the heart.

Drug lords??? Like the early tobacco farmers in the South?

Exactly. If you can offer an interpretation of the term "drug lord" than could reasonably exclude tobacco companies, I'd like to hear it. Making huge profits selling an addictive and dangerous drug, sounds like the work of drug lords to me, but at least they're "our" drug lords instead of Mexican or Columbian drug lords.

I hope either

a) smoking becomes illegal

or

b) the government doesn't have to pay a DIME in healthcare costs toward someone who smokes

I am a smoker, I am down to only about 4 cigs a day. I am here to say smoking should be illegal now!!!!! What does it do for you as a smoker besides make you ill all the time inevitably leading to heart disease and cancer. To the OP....you are an idiot.

What about if you change smoke/smoking to:
a)eating very unhealthy food
b)not exercising
c)drinking heavily
d)any number of bad for you, but still legal and still covered under health insurance habits?

How do you propose we inforce the new eating laws? Video cameras in every fridge?

And to the OP who said that because of the anti-smoking lobby smoking will be illegal. ROFL!
Have you ever heard of the tobacco industry lobby?

exactly.

As long as they get tax money out of it, the government will never ban it.

Threads like this remind me of the few things I think Jeffererson was really spot on about.

"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."
